Moving to Seattle, from So Cal, Would like some advice.?
Question:
I'm planning on moving to Seattle from Southern California and would like to know what to expect from someone living there that would be in a similar situation. I don't need to know about traffic or cost of living,...I live in CA it's 10x worse here. We just want to know if it is possible to find jobs pretty quickly, nothing fancy just maybe 20-30k a year jobs. Office asst. Warehouse manager.. stuff like that. I would love to live in an area where getting around w/out a car would be really easy. We both like walking and just hanging out at bars, restaurants, library's, parks stuff like that. I heard sales tax is pretty high there but We're at 9% ourselves so that shouldn't be a huge problem but is there any other downsides we might want to know about besides the usual Also is there any other upsides we should know about. Would really appreciate your help/incite/suggestions From what we have found online, we really like the downtown area, Bellevue, Redmond, Mercer Island. Are these good areas to live in? Are there any other good areas that you could recommend. By the way I'm not originally from So Cal so I'm not planning on taking a snobby attitude with me to Seattle or ruining your gorgeous city. Just really need a change and a fresh start in a new place.

Answer:
Don't do it. That's the advice I can give you. I was born in Seattle, raised in Boston, lived in the LA area for five years and the Bay Area for one, and have been in Seattle for the last year and a half. I'm going to be moving back down there in about ten days, and am almost ashamed to admit that I was conceived and took my first breaths in this place. People in Socal complain about fakeness - that everyone is so over the top and acts waaaaay cool and sophisticated and socially aware, but is actually just a talentless bumpkin from Tupelo trying to get a rich boyfriend or a career in acting. People are just as fake in Seattle, they just come across as an intellectual, green, friendly, politically and socially aware and open person, and they're really just a libertarian, selfish blowhard with social anxiety disorder from somewhere else in the US. People here are polite, not friendly. There's a difference. They will smile at you on the street. They may even ask how you are doing. But that's about it. Anything more, and they will get really freaked out and scared, and carefully extract themselves from the situation. It's NOT easy meeting people here. They don't want to be met. Since it's you and the Mrs., you'll have someone to hang out with at the bar... people do not go out to bars to meet new people, just to socialize with those they already know, and getting to this point can take years. Bellevue, Mercer Island, and Redmond are plenty nice, but are costly. If the two of you are making about 30k you could definitely do it; if you're making 20k each, then you probably could. The cost of living in Seattle is, in all truth, comparable to Los Angeles. You tend to get paid better down there, and food is cheaper (seriously). Car insurance is, shockingly, more expensive up here, because we're worse in terms of car theft than Socal (amazing, isn't it?). You can come here with the sweetest attitude possible: doesn't matter. You're a Californian. Californians aren't actually people from California, they're people who came to Seattle from anywhere else in the US, and have "ruined" it in the minds of the "locals," most of whom are ALSO from elsewhere! It's absurd. Do yourself a favor and don't come here.
