From New York City to Roanoke is like 7 hours. My Dad was recently in both Chicago and New York, and I'll bet to both cities, he flew over Roanoke. Failure to Maintain Control (Virginia)?
Question:
Over the weekend i was involved in a one car accident in roanoke virginia. I was traveling down one of the curvy mountain roads and lost control of my car coming around a corner, i went off the road and hit an embankment on the side of the road. The police officer that responded issued my a summons with the violation "failure to maintain control" and i have a mandatory court date scheduled. There was also no speed limit where i was involved in the accident, the police officer told me himself. My question is, what exactly will i be looking at when i go to court? a fine? something more harsh? I'm 19 years old and have never had any kind of prior tickets/accidents or any other run in with the law. Just wondering what i should be expecting when i go to court.

Answer:
A fine is what you will be facing.~

Does anyone know where I can rent a used car in Virginia?
Question:
I'm visiting VA in about a year and will need a car. I want a used car because I'll be 18. I will have a UK license but will probably get a VA license. Anywhere in VA Beach, Norfolk, Roanoke or Lynchburg would be good. Thanks!

Answer:
the name sounds bad but the company is good and they are in VA. You may want to check into U.S. laws to do with foreign driving licenses and/or look into an international drivers license, if you are just visiting.

Do you think it will make it with no problems?
Question:
I have a used car that I bought last week. It's a 1993 Toyota Camry and it has 172,000 miles on it. I have a trip to take from Roanoke Virginia to Charlotte, NC. I'm really hesitant on driving it that far since it already has alot of miles on it already. It doesn't have any problems and really don't want to cause any. Should I attempt to make the trip in it?

Answer:
As long as all the fluids are fresh, it should be fine. A Toyota product will typically last quite a lot longer than 200k miles as long as it has been maintained fairly well. If you are unsure when the last time it was looked at, take it to your local Toyota dealer and have them give it a once over. A fluid check and oil change should cost no more than $50. If you want them to go over everything (and subsequently have a list of repairs), a full inspection will cost $200-300. Three important things... 1. Make sure you have enough oil and periodically check it if it burns (blueish smoke from the tailpipe) or leaks oil. 2. The '93 Camry has a timing belt, be sure it has been changed in the last 60,000 miles. 3. Check the tires, be sure they aren't dry rotted (cracks along the seams) or bald, and are inflated properly. I drive a '98 Corolla with 125k 65 miles a day, and it runs like a charm... Good Luck!

Shenandoah National Park - 1996 Police Cars?
Question:
Several years ago (1996), we were driving down to North Carolina to visit some relatives. We took the scenic drive through Shenandoah in Virginia on the way down. About quarter way into the drive we stopped at the Visitors Center to take a look around. In the parking lot was alot of media vans for local television stations (NBC Roanoke, CBS Richmond ect). There was also alot of police cars and big canvas tents set up. Well anyways we looked around and then set off again along the scenic drive. Just 15 minutes after we left the Visitors Center traffic slowed down near a camp ground area and hikeing area with a parking lot at the entrance. In the parking lot was thousands of police cars, and the entire site was blocked off with yellow police tape. Lot's of people had stopped at the side of the road to see what was going on. We never did find out what it was or what happened but it seemed like a big thing. Does anyone have information on this?

Questions Regarding Car Insurance?
Question:
I'm a 20 years old female and in Roanoke Virginia. I do not have a drivers license, but I've had my learners permit for several months and am planning to schedule my driving test as soon as possible. Before I take my driving test, however, I need to figure out and work my budget around insurance. I have a few questions. 1) Is it possible, and if so is it worth it, to get insurance before I take my driving test? 2) I know it's a dice roll, especially since I haven't purchased the car yet, but any guess on what I'll be paying for insurance on, say, a 2002-2006 Honda Civic (Assuming I can find one that doesn't have any stupid mods on it) or a Toyota Corolla in the same age range? (Yes, I know large age range, but that's what I'm looking at) I will be paying for this car outright. I will not be making any payments on it. 3) My mother has a horrendous driving record (she's totaled 3 cars in the past two years). Will that effect my rate, even though I am not going on her plan, we are not in the same state, and she did not teach me to drive? Will my father's clean driving record (not so much as a parking ticket since 1973) benefit me? 4) Speaking of my parents, will I need to get ahold of their driving records? 5) How long does it take for insurance to become active and legal?

Answer:
1. Yes, but you MUST have listed on your policy, the person who's licensed to drive, and who will be driving your car until you have your license. 2. Insurance is more about YOUR credit score and which coverages YOU pick. If you want "full coverage" on the car, you can bet it's probably going to run you $5,000 a year. Liability only, probably closer to $2000 a year. Keep in mind, your credit score counts. 3. You will have to list ALL household members, and everyone with regular access to your car. If you don't live with mom or dad, neither of their driving records will affect you. 4. No. The insurance company will pull driving records for you, and everyone in your household. You WILL have to provide names, dates of birth, and license numbers. 5. If you walk into a local agent's office, you can walk out in under 30 minutes with a policy "bound" and in force.

Is Winston-Salem North Carolina near New York?
Question:
I have a feeling that Winston-Salem is close to New York but I am not quite sure. I do live here and I asked a similar question if Winston-Salem was on the Virginia border. I have actually driven from New York back to Winston-Salem my home town and it only took from New York by going down to New Jersey and I actually stopped in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then took I-95 down to Maryland and that took about 3 hours. Then I took another 3 hours from there to Roanoke Virginia and then south took almost 2 hours to be exact. So, this makes me think that Winston-Salem, North Carolina is near New York. About how far is it from here to New York? (When I say here, I really mean, I live here), and how long could it take by car?

Answer:
It would probably take around 17 hours to get from Winston-Salem, NC to New York, NY.

tooya celica fuse relay box question?
Question:
ok. this is a multi part question. my friend got a 5th generation toyota celica from his aunt. she didnt want it anymore, and he needed a car, blah blah blah. we live in manassas, virginia. his aunt lives in roanoke. he and his dad drove it from roanoke to manassas, and everything was fine. no engine knocking, plenty of life in the engine, everything seemed fine. they let it sit for a few days cause they had to wait to get up enough money to have it go through dmv paperwork and pay for insurance, and get it inspected, the works. my friend got in, and the car cranked, but wouldnt start. now, any normal person would automatically check the gas gauge and the battery. but noooooooo. he told his dad, and his dad decided to be a dumbass. he popped the hood, and decided it was something wrong with the computer system in the car. after he couldnt find it, he checked the fuse relay. he took out fuses one by ne to have them tested. eventually he got to the efi main fuse. he took it out (and then lost) the efi main fuse, then worked his way over to the alternator fuse. while trying to get that out, he shattered the plastic cap, and then tried to muscle the copper prongs out, or something, and broke off alot of the copper that was sticking out. he got pissed off, and gave up. my friend had me over to try to get it working. i popped the hood and saw the battery was 4 years old, and a crappy brand that i had never heard of before. so before i knew anything about the fuses, (i didnt learn about that till later) i tried to jump it. the lights on the dash wouldnt even register when the battery was hooked up to a brand new one. so i asked if they had done anything to it before i looked at it. thats when i got the story. question time. would the missing efi main fuse and a missing alternator fuse cause the car to go from clicking when the key turned, to nothing at all? is there a way to take the fuse relay box apart so i can get those stupid prongs out so they dont have to blow mad money on a new entire electrical harness system? (thats what his dad says the dealership told him when he asked. i dont see how that would merit a new entire electrical harness, but whatever.) i dont have a knack for working on mechanical stuff, but electrical stuff im good at. just to make sure, is there anything i would be missing that would cause the car to not turn on after he took out the fuses? (saying we replaced those) cause once those get replaced, im thinking that it should be ok to get jumped. but the big one is, IS THERE A WAY TO GET THAT FRAKKING BOX OPEN SO I CAN GET THOSE FRAKKING PRONGS OUT?!?! >.< i spent 3 hours trying to get them out with a pair of pliers before i wanted to punt babies across a football field. or even easier, what do you recommend doing to get those cursed things out????? -love in advance

Answer:
It is not wise to jump the newer cars with computer systems. Two things can happen even though they don't happen often. You can burn out the computer or diodes in the alternator. If you are going to attempt to remove the prongs you are talking about make sure to disconnect the battery. You could try a tweezers or a thin needle nose pliers. You could also try putting some supper glue on a tooth pick and touching it to the prongs being careful not to touch anything else. When it drys then try to pull up. if the glue sticks to something else nail polish remover breaks the bond. Make sure to replace any damaged fuses or relays. With the battery disconnected check the connections at the starter motor and alternator. If you have a meter check the continuity. Take the battery to dealer that checks batteries for you. Many do this free. If a battery is damaged like fried cells it won't even let you jump the vehicle. Also have them check the alternator. Good chance messing around with the electrical the way the dad did he may have fried somethings like the alternator or computer. Don't be placing any blame here let's keep the peace. Replace whatever is necessary. After doing all this if it still doesn't start you will have to have it looked at by a pro. Electrical problems can be the worse to trouble shoot but in you case I don't think that will happen. Since the father was messing with the box I don't know why the dealer ship suggested changing the harness rather then the fuse box. Maybe the fuse box is part of the harness but not likely. Could be just the fuse box is broke. If you can get continuity through all the fuses while their switches are engaged from a negative ground it is probably not a problem the relays is a different story. Relays can be costly. He could have shorted out the relays and fuses if he bent or broke them off. Good luck! If it needs further trouble shooting and help, take it to a reputable mechanic. Dealer are usually about three times as expensive. Unfortunately sometimes only dealers can fix them or have the parts.
