How much should i charge for babysitting?
Question:
I'm going to start babysitting soon to earn some money to save for college/car/etc. this summer. Because this will be the first time i'll be an official neighborhood "babysitter", i was considering charging $2 per hour, adding $1 if there's more then one child. I would clean, cook, and of course watch the child(ren). By the way, i'm 14 years old but very very responsible for my age. Do you think i should charge more, or is this a good starting price? If your a parent and/or experenced sitter, please help! Thanks! BTW, the area is farifax/burke virginia if that makes a difference.

Answer:
When I was in high school, I charged $5 and time-and-a-half past midnight. And even then that was well below minimum wage! I think minimum wage now is about $7. In my experience, most parents were willing to pay about $7-8 an hour, and tipped based on length of time, number of children, how late they were out, or if they got back later then they said they would. Baby-sitting is a great way to earn money, and 14 is about the average age most people start babysitting. That being said, it can be a lot of work, especially if you plan to do basic tidying up and such while you are there. You deserve a fair wage for that, and $2 an hour is low. Don't feel bad for asking minimum wage. You are working, and watching kids means you definitely earn it! Have fun!
