Traveling from Texas to Taiwan to meet my boyfriends parents in December. Any suggestions?
Question:
I will be in Nantou for 1 week in December. Any suggestions for good restaurants, karaoke bars, Buddhist temples, or anything you think we should experience while there? We will have a rental car. Also, does anyone have cultural advice or insight for me as an American? How to show respect in ways which matter most? Common misunderstandings to avoid?

Answer:
I've lived in Taichung for over seven years and have been to Nantou many times, so I can attest to the fact that Nantou is full of scenic spots- if you know where to go. Here's a brief list of places you should defiantly visit while your there. 1. Aowanda National Forest- This forest is the only place in Taiwan that I've been to where I've actually seen trees with the red and yellow leaves of autumn. I was lucky enough to acatually see it on an day when there wasn't many people. The only thing I'm not sure about is wheter the leaves will still be there in December since Taiwan has a different climate. So ask around and go if possible. http://www.forest.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=22349&ctNode=1 361&mp=3 http://twcam.www.gov.tw/webcam/english/ecology/main.j sp?view_id=88&belong_id=11&who=view 2. Sun Moon Lake- Largest lake in Taiwan, built by the Japanese in colonial times. There are several notable temples surrounding the lake, including one dedicated to Tang San Zang detailing his travels from the "Journey to the West." You can also go on boat tours if you wish. http://www.traveltaiwan.com/e/g3.htm 3. He Huan Shan- This mountain is pretty high at about 3400 meters, and is one of the most ascessable ones as a main cross island highway passes next to it. Sometimes if your lucky and the weather is right, you might even get a bit of snow. http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Taiwan/Central/Nan tou/photo133499.htm 4. Lu-Shan Hot Springs- Since your going in December it will be a tad chilly, so take some time to relax in the natural hot springs. Interesting thing about Lu-Shan is the old style suspension bridge in the town, which looks beautiful when it's covered by mist near twilight. 5. Wushe- Wushe is just a town one would normally pass through, but the road leading from Puli to Wushe is lined with cherry blossoms planted by a farmer. 6. Chi-Chi Train Station- Old train station also built in the colonial times (I think) but was severely damaged in the 921 earthquake of 1999. It was given a makeover and is now a popular tourist site where tourists can rent bikes and go biking in the fields nearby. Thats pretty much my short list of places to visit. As for cultural advice... One common problem that Americans run into is that some homes may require you to take off your shoes at the door and wear slippers while indoors. Also its inpolite as well as unclean to use your own chopsticks to take items from a shared platter. I guess thats all I can think of for now. Oh, and don't assume that everyone in Taiwan can or prefers to speak chinese. Some older people prefer to speak Taiwanese so maybe learn to say a few phrases of Taiwanese. And if you get tired of Nantou head over to Taichung, which is actually a pretty nice place to live in. It has Subways, Costco (opening in november), as well as several department stores.

Would you board the Texas Eagle with me? (A reposting)?
Question:
This is a re-write of a poem I posted about two weeks ago, following an AMTRAK trip from San Antonio to Cincinnati, by way of Chicago. I liked the original poem, but thought it could be smoothed out a little and I hope this does the trick. An American Sojourn By Warren Domke Clickety-clack, the wheels on the track It’s the Texas Eagle, northward bound. But there’s continuous drought, all about. As I gaze through windows all around. San Marcos, Austin, Temple, Waco, Yes, Texas cities they are all; Fort Worth, Dallas, Texarkana, Daylight fading at the dinner call. Nighttime comes, to berths we go. A “sleeping” car, not well named. But morning comes, and scenes have changed. Rainy, sleepy towns through windows framed. Here’s breakfast in the dining car. Say, AMTRAK’s food is great. And St. Louis, now surrounded by floods. Texas Eagle goes through but late. Chicago’s next, it was once was my home. But now just one more station. A change of trains, Cardinal’s next. And Cincinnati’s our destination. Oh, America, I love you so. How wonderful are your vistas. And if I may be forgiven a joke, We love being its turistas. A further note. I am 70 years old. My earliest long train trip was taken when I was about 4 or 5 years old, and I remember it very well. The sound of a train whistle at night will always remind me of these long-ago trips and will always be a lullaby to me. When I was in college in New Mexico I rode several trains as a practical and comfortable way to get from one place to another. I have ridden trains in Japan, Belgium and Mexico. I hope to ride again. Will you join me? I was a little disappointed that so few people answered my first submission. I hope the response this time is a little better, and, if you responded to the first one, I hope you think this rewrite improved the original.

Answer:
I've often dreamt of lonely towns where a whistling train harbingers change. I would take a boxcar like Frosty, get lost often, exploring the strange making it familiar. Learning small town secrets- ancient history. The sound of a train takes me down tracks to mystery of the unknown, away from this ugly sin city, where all around the healthy and pretty flora and fauna can thrive and grow. Take me with you when you go.

amtrak, How is the texas eagle line?
Question:
Im traveling from temple tx to chicago and would like to know the general quality of the trip. this will be my first time on an amtrak. im leaving from temple on a monday, so are the coach cars pretty packed with poeple? im using the bus coach to get from killeen to temple and from chicago back home to madison,wi. is it an easy transition from bus to train and visa versa? I guess any info yall could provide would be helpful about the texas eagle route, as i know not what to expect from my trip. I took the greyhound from wisconsin to texas, and will never travel bus cross country again, so i assume the amtrak trip back should be better. right?

Answer:
The Texas Eage is a good train, but it doesn't have the best on-time performance record. Be prepared for the possibility of the train arriving late. I don't know how crowded the train will be, but in general Amtrak is doing well these days due to the price of gas, so you should expect a busy train. It will definitely be much better than taking the bus. You'll be able to walk around and visit the sightseer lounge car and the dining car. Definitely walk around the train! If your bus connection is through Amtrak, you can expect it to be easy. If you'd like to know more about riding Amtrak, some friends of mine have compiled a guide to traveling on Amtrak. Just follow the link below and then click on "Amtrak Travel Tips" which will be on the left side of the screen. http://www.on-track-on-line.com

Answer:
Hey, Not all those laws are bad. Especially that one about another man milking my cow. I was following sage advice when i was told why buy milk when i can own my cow. That's why i got married. It would bother me to no end to know another man was milking my cow.

Answer:
Dudel......I tell you this because I am getting the idea that you may bet on the games. I have a man from Las Vegas (A professional Gambler) who charges $1 per game for picks. He is very good. He hits about 65% of his games and I have been with him for over 2 years. You can do one of two things with him. You can pay him $1 per pick or pay him $20 and learn how Las Vegas Odds makers mathematically figure the lines. It is amazing. This guy is the best sports bettor I have ever come across. send me an email if you want his info. But don't bother him if you are not serious. PS I can tell you this, the first game, Temple and Wyoming is way off on the line.

Answer:
Wow this was really well thought out. I enjoyed reading it. It's looks pretty accurate to me. The only thing I have a problem with is Oklahoma and Ok. St. I think St. will beat Oklahoma, unfortunatley. Unless Oklahoma comes out ready to play, and plays all out, I think Ok. St. will beat them. Let's hope Oklahoma comes out with more determination and focus though eh? -Also the Alabama FSU game, that one will be intresting. I'm going with Alabama, but would rather FSU win. Very good job thinking this all out.
