How many checkpoints are there between texas and california?
Question:
I'm driving to california spring break from Austin, Texas and was planning on bringing a certain illegal plant along for the ride for myself to smoke on, but i wanted to know what the police checkpoints are like, how many there are, and if i'm a white 18 year old male, with a white 18 year old girlfriend in the car, would they search for drugs?

Answer:
I've driven from Georgia to California and never hit a checkpoint, I don't think they set up checkpoints on the interstate since it would cause a traffic jam that would make Los Angles traffic jams look like a nascar race. Your only problem would be when you enter cities or get pulled over.

i'm going to texas over spring break...what should i bring?
Question:
like i know all the normal stuff, but is there anything special i should bring? like sundresses, any special shoes, or even anything to keep me occupied in the car? anything will help(: thanks!!

Answer:
I went to Texas last break. It was almost 80 degrees, so i recomened bringing a variety of things. a few dresses, but morslt shorts and remember at least 1 pair of jeans because it can get chilly at night. Bring sneakers for walking and sandels/ flip flops. Maybe 1 pair of fancy shoes, depends on if you will be going out for dinner. I know this sounds really babyish, but i always print out pictures to color in the car. You could get one oof those laptop desks. It makes time go by. Also remember music

University of Texas at Austin spring transfer help!!!!!!please!?
Question:
My freshman year was a really tough year for reasons beyond my control. My grandparents lived with my family for many years and they were as influential in raising me as my parents. First semester, about a month after I had moved, my grandfather passed away from a brain hemorrhage. Then, a month later my grandmother followed. I had a very difficult time coping with the loss of two of the most important people in my life and I was still struggling with the college transition. I had originally intended to take 5 classes first semester but after these events I dropped it to only 3. Second semester, I was still grieving heavily but decided to try and makeup for the lack of classes last semester in order to complete 30 hours by the end of the year, so I took 8 classes/24 hours. The workload was intense and I still wasn't recovering well from the loss of my grandparents when I heard some more horrible news. My best friend, of 7 years, had gotten into a severe car accident and was in a coma and the doctors aren't sure when or if she'll wake up. It was all too much to bear, it was incredibly hard for me to keep on going, and it still is, but I knew I had to. I am aware that my grades from this year do not reflect my best academic performance, or even come close, but they do reflect my best efforts under horrible circumstances I came out of this year with a 2.3 gpa which wasn't very good I realize. my parents have since moved to cali and have taken me with them to study for a semester to recoup. with family etc. and then I hope to try applying again to UT in the spring...what do you think my chances are?? I was previously a 'CAP' student for UT at UTSA. I know its a long question but I need help! thanks :)

Answer:
I'm very sorry to hear about all the loses you have suffered. I hate to tell you this, but UT is a very tough school. They consider themselves rather "elite" and are tough when considering GPAs. Now, I'm not completely sure I understood your story completely. Were you already a student at UT in Austin, and then moved. Or is this the first time you are applying to UT? If you were already a student, you might have a better chance of getting back in....However, if you are transfering your grades from UTSA, it's going to be difficult. If you can not get in, I would suggest you take courses at ACC in austin to help get your GPA up and then transfer in after a semester or two. These class will not only be cheaper for you to take, but ACC is usually a little more intimate, and has a better professor to student ratio, so you will be able to get more help with assignments and not feel like only a "number" on the HUGE UT campus.

Will rust stop eating my cars brake & fuel lines, etc. after moving from NY to Texas?
Question:
Last year I moved from NY to Texas and had my 1993 Ford Crown Victoria transported here. So far 2 brake lines sprung a leak due to rust from NY. Also the 2 pipes coming out of the fuel pump started leaking, I had to cut them near the leak and run two 2 feet long rubber fuel lines off them. Then the fuel filter started leaking due to rust. When I removed the filter the rubber quick connect hose connected to it broke off the metal fuel line, so I had to run another rubber hose between the filter and pipe. Anyway now that I am in Texas (no snow) will the rust that is still on my car get worse meaning more leaks will happen or is just about stopped in its tracks because of the weather here?

Answer:
Not only did you have to worry about road salt in NY there's also the acid rain. Do you realize the entire North Western portion of the United States has what they call a corrosive atmosphere? Comes from all the coal fired power plants in the area. Hate to tell you this but once fuel and brake lines start to rust out the process will continue until you replace them. Granted it will take a bit longer but the problem will continue. Years back I worked in a garage and my boss gave me a 1969 Galaxy XL that was originally from the Chicago area. The 428 ran strong but the body was rusted out. Had the same thing happen even in dry arid Southern California. Rear brake lines blew out...TWICE, this was after the car had been in California for several years. If you want to keep this vehicle I'd strongly recommend replacing both the brake and fuel lines. Granted its a royal pain in the butt but once you replace them you won't have to worry about engine fires or brake failures any longer.

I am planning on taking a Spring Break Ski Trip to Keystone, Colorado. What kind of car should I rent?
Question:
I am trying to decide if I should rent a vehicle that is "ski ready" or just a regular vehicle. Since I am going from Texas I feel like it would be hard to find a vehicle that is ready for the snow. Please let me know what you think I should do, especially if you have experience doing this. Thanks in advance

Answer:
Are you coming by yourself, or will you have other passengers? Do you have you own ski gear or will you be renting? The amount of luggage and passengers might restrict your choices to a large SUV or a VAN. Are you driving from Texas or flying into Denver and renting there? If you are flying in and staying close to the slopes, you could just take an airport shuttle. Usually you won't need a car once you get to Keystone. There is a free county-wide bus service, the Summit Stage. An airport shuttle saves you from having to drive in the unpredictable traffic and weather in the mountains.

Moved from Texas to North Dakota. Should I spring for a "plugin" for my Honda?
Question:
I have a 1999 Honda Accord that I bought while living in Texas and drove over to Grand Forks this Fall. I plan on taking my car and getting the battery replaced and purchasing snow tires next week. People are telling me that I should not need the plugin thingy since I have a garage but I am a busy grad student and need my car functioning properly at all times. My car is in pretty good shape with 84K miles on it. Do you think getting the plugin is essential? How much should it cost, anyway? I really want to get a remote starter and that costs about $400 I am told. I would like to save some bucks but will get the plug in system if I really have to. Apparently, the "plugin thingy" I was referring to is called a block heater. Lord, I miss Texas already. =P And by the by, my car is up to date on all the servicing as per stated in the Honda user's manual.

Answer:
I too moved to North Dakota from Texas back in 1996 If i were you i would get the block heater because you may need to use it. Fuel injected vehicle do not like to start in the super cold weather, trust me on this.

where can you rent surfboards in Galveston Texas? also how much are they and how long do you get them?
Question:
im going to galveston for spring break. im taking a friends car so my board will not fit in the vehicle. i REALLY need to go surfing but i wont have my board with me and i cant figure out where to go there to get one. i know the waves arent very big here... im used to huntington beach (where i am from) but we decided to go somewhere new!

Answer:
Yes, you can rent boards in Galveston. Try Underground Surf Depot. They used to have 2 locations on seawall, but since Ike, I think only the one just past 61st street is open: http://undergroundsurfdepot.com/. You can also try Ohana: http://undergroundsurfdepot.com/. I think you can rent boards from there, but I'm not 100% sure. Also try Surf Specialties: http://www.surfspecialties.com/. They used to rent boards before they moved locations. If you want to travel an hour or so down the coast, you can try going to Surfside and see if Bingo's is still there. I don't know his status since the storm, so I can't vouch for that one. Depending on when you're here, you might have decent small swells, or you could have completely flat water. So, you'll have to play it by ear once you get here. But, you'll see plenty of surfers out and about if there's a swell to be ridden. People like to surf here when there's a bunch of chop because the wind makes the waves bigger. But frankly, I think it's more trouble than it's worth when you're fighting the chop the whole time. Good luck and have fun! EDIT: Oops, sorry, forgot to answer the other part of your question. I haven't had to rent a board in a long time, but when I did it was maybe around $30 and you got to use them until 5pm-ish. Sorry, not very helpful, huh? ANOTHER EDIT: Kris below couldn't be more incorrect. Most businesses along Seawall were unaffected by Ike.

Is there any company or service in austin that offers delivery service? door to door in austin texas?
Question:
I don't have a car but am wanting to pick up a twin mattress and box spring from someone else's apartment and I don't have a car. Is there any company or service in austin that offers such kind of door to door service? and is it going to be expensive? I tried to look on usps and couldn't find any service like that.

Answer:
Yeah, lots of guys with trucks looking for some extra cash and a lot of movers that do this sort of thing, you can find some on austin.craigslist.org/lbs It'll probably be 50-100$. I think anything less than $50 and it's not worth the trip for most people, but it might be more now with gas prices where they are. Another option might be to rent a truck, the one you can get from home depot is the cheapest (something like $20 for 90 minutes - you have to make sure they'll let you just rent the truck though, because some won't if you're not using it to haul something home from home depot) and do it yourself.
