We will soon be driving to Queretaro from Minnesota via Laredo, Texas. Anyone familiar with the route?
Question:
I drove this route about 12 years ago and remember it as a nightmare. The roads were not completed and the alternate routes were pretty scarey. What will I need for car insurance and such? How much time should I expect it to take? Any and all advise will be welcomed and appreciated. We are two adults and two late teenaged boys. Twelve years ago was a bad dream. I had to take the shoulder regularly to avoid hitting oncoming passing cars head on. It was nerve wrecking in many ways. I feared for my LIFE! but I will assume things have inmproved there since then How do I go about getting the necessary car insurance? At the boarder? Can I realistically make Queretaro from Laredo in a good day?

Answer:
Unless you have a really good reason to, avoid crossing at Laredo. Nuevo Laredo is a very dangerous town. Search for news stories on it and you will see what I mean. We have crossed twice in the last four months at the small town of Eagle Pass, Texas and it was quick and easy. Eagle Pass also has a Sanborns Insurance that you can get mexican insurance at, your US insurance will not cover you! Sanborns also sells a guide book for the route down that I found helpful. You can take HWY 57 all the way down, very nice road, you will be amazed at the improvement. Take toll roads where ever you can, they will save you valuable time. Don't know the time from Laredo but if you go from eagle pass you are looking at between 10 and 11 hours, NOT COUNTING the time you spend at customs and immigration of meal breaks. Do you own the vehicle outright, if not you need a letter of permission from the lien holder to bring you vehicle into Mexico. Good Luck! Todd

Which city is closer to Monterrey, Mexico, McAllen Texas or Laredo Texas?
Question:
And how long of a car/bus ride is it from both to Monterrey?

Answer:
Monterrey, Mexico is in the state of Nuevo Leon, not Tamaulipas (they're next to each other), however, to get to either McAllen or Laredo, it's easier and faster to cross from Tamaulipas. Laredo is slightly closer, it's about 2-2.5 hours and McAllen is 2.5-3 hours from Monterrey. Depends on the traffic.

Can anyone please tell me what I might expect as I drive from Laredo, Texas to Queretaro (city).?
Question:
I drove this route some 12 years ago and encountered many difficulties the main one being road construction. I hope the route is finished now and easier to travel. We are a family of 4 (two adults and two teenaged boys). What will I encounter for car insurance? Is there someone at the boarder who will assist me with this? Is integrety a concern? Any comments or advise about this trip will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
You will have to buy insurance (at the border) and probably leave a deposit for your car. You will have to drive to Monterrey (the freeways are very nice, but there are tollbooths, in total it will cost about 100 dollars), then to Saltillo, then to Matehuala (take the libramientos, that way you won´t have to go into the city), and continue to Queretaro. There are many gas stations and places to eat. Probably there will be road blocks by the army or agricultural services between states, you cannot carry drugs or weapons (fire arms or big knives) nor meat or fruits & vegetables. Don´t pick up hitchhikers. Have a great time!

What is the most affordable car insurance for Mexico?
Question:
I'm traveling to Mexico by car. I'll be crossing the border in Laredo, Texas. What is the most affordable mexican car insurance available? The last time I did this, it was about $65 for three days. I used Johnson Insurance.

Answer:
the cost of car insurance depends a lot on what kind of car you are driving (year, model) and how much insurance coverage you yourself decide that you want. you can opt for a cheap policy which covers only the basics, or pay more to get a better more comprehensive coverage to include things like vandalism or partial theft. It also depends on how long you are going to be in Mexico (days? month? year?) and whether or not you intend to go back and forth more than once... my brother, for example, gets a yearly policy while my husband and I usually buy policies based on how long each of our trips is going to be. we've used Baja Bound for about 6 years now and have been very satisfied. solid coverage, great customer service. I'll post a link below...

where do you legalize a car in mexico?
Question:
is there a place in laredo texas to legalize a car for mexico

Answer:
The car must be 10 years old and you have to pay the tax which for most vehicles is about $800.00usd and can be paid at the "FISCAL" office. The office is 200 yards east of the bridge. After paying the Tax you will be given all the paperwork to take to the Mexican state where you can buy plates for your car. You do Not need a permit to drive in to Mexico. You do if you are going beyond the free trade zone which in most cases is 20 km from the border.
