Legal consultation over suspended license in Tennessee?
Question:
I am 17 and I live in the state of Tennessee. I am not rich and I pay for all my bills(phone, gas, insurance(now)). In November of 2010, I got stopped because my car didn’t have a bumper, I didn’t have insurance at the time and I got a ticket. I then went and GOT insurance and paid for my ticket(I had to show proof of insurance in order to pay). In January 2011, I get a letter saying that I hadn’t shown proof of insurance and that if I didn’t my license will be suspended, and to mail in proof of insurance. I did(since I already got insurance). Friday February 18, 2011 a police officer stops me for routine check, I’m informed that my license was suspended for failure to show insurance, and that I am not allowed to drive and have a pending court day in juvenile court. I call the State Of Tennessee Department of Safety and a exasperated and unfriendly lady tells me I have to pay a $65 dollar fee and that my license is suspended for not having insurance ON the day of the ticket. I have a feeling this is not right and she just said it to hang up and hurry and go home. Is there any lawyer that can help me know if that is right? I live in Shelby County, Bartlett TN(close to Memphis). I didnt have insurance in the day in November that I got stoped. But, I got insurance that same week and still have the same insurance to this day.

Answer:
I suggest you go pay the $65 fee. She probably IS right. This is very common. Also, you should pick up your phone book and look for local attorneys that way.
