I need help deciding what I should do?
Question:
Long story short, I was going to go down to California on the 28th to visit my father. Except some things came up today and yesterday and I may have to cancel or replan that trip. I accidentally left my wallet (with my id) in a friend's van, so I can't get my ticket if I don't have my id. The person who has my id lives really far away (a few hours driving), and I don't have any reliable way of getting it soon. Ugh But, there's also what happened today. I went in for the beginning of job shadowing and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they would be willing to actually hire me since I already know the gist of everything, and that I could have a job as soon as thursday or friday. Except for one thing. They would need an id from me. Double ugh. So now not only would I need to get it before the end of the month, it's now before the end of the week. I may end up having to just go to the dmv and paying for a new one. So I was calling my dad's friend in California to tell him that he shouldn't buy the ticket yet (he called earlier today and he said he was going to buy it today or tomorrow), because I probably couldn't leave for a week if I just started working at my job. He said it was ok, but then he suggested something I wasn't expecting. He told me how he would be alright if I actually moved down there to California and lived with him, since he has lots of extra space, has a second car that I could drive, and he said he could get me a job if I went down there. I could also see my father a lot more if I lived nearby, since this trip was going to be the first time I've seen him in a year or so, and I was just starting to build a father son relationship with him before he was transferred down there. I'm actually putting some serious consideration in moving down there. I mean, there isn't much for me here in Sherwood, OR (a very small town), but there's also the fact that I would have a guaranteed job, as well as it paying for college, so I could also go to college if I stayed here. But I know that eventually I will have to leave Sherwood. If I move down to California though, I can also get a job, as well as have a car, have more opportunities, and be able to see my dad. I am 18 now, so I can realistically move down there if I wished. It's so odd to imagine that this is a possibility for me, but I'm really unsure of what I should do. I'm going to have to talk to my parents about this thoroughly, but yeah, this is definitely an interesting new path in life I can take. Pros to moving down there: 1. Can get a possibly better job down there then what I'll be getting here 2. Can get a license and a car 3. Will have more opportunities with colleges and possibly jobs 4. I'll be able to visit my dad a lot more and be able to rebuild our relationship 5. I'll be able to broaden my horizons and experience more of the world Cons to moving down there: 1. I'll be getting a guaranteed job here in Oregon (though only part time at first) 2. This job will help pay for college, so I can finally get some schooling 3. I really like Oregon weather a lot more than California's. I'm more of a rain person than a sun person. 4. California might be more expensive to live in, since I know they probably still have a sales tax. Can someone from CA tell me how the economy is down there? 5. I'll be far away from a lot of people I care about (family, friends, fellow smashers), and possibly may never be able to see some of them again. Not to mention I won't know anyone except my dad's friend down there, so I'd have to start life over basically. 6. I won't really have anyone to help or support me like I do up here. I could still call my pastor on the phone, but it wouldn't be the same as all the times we are together in person. 7. Kind of like the above two, but I'd probably feel super lonely being on my own. I don't know if I can do this. So yeah, this is definitely a lot of food for thought for me. I'm really unsure which path would be best for me. Should I stay with what's familiar to me, or leave the nest and try to survive on my own in the world out there? So many choices....

Answer:
In actuality, your are still pretty young. Wouldn't it be wiser to stay where your support network of family & friends are? Plus, you even prefer the weather . . . A lot can be said about visiting over the telephone, & if you get certain phone services over the internet, Long Distance within the continental USA can be FREE. You could talk every day! I have friends & family I do that with, & feel that it works very well. Besides, what *real* guarantee do you have that the job in CA would really work out . . . ? So . . . I suggest not making a quick decision about it. Don't feel that you have to decide right now --&-- don't make a decision about it as long as you feel uneasy about moving. It may be very exciting to think of living near your father---However, such exciting possibilities can actually blurr your good judgement! . . . Have your friend MAIL your wallet back to you, using SAME DAY / SIGN FOR IT, SERVICE?
