How far is BANDON, Oregon from Salem, the capital of Oregon, by car?
Question:
If you know, or you can find out, please tell me. It's really important. THANKS! I'm writing a book and the main character moves to Bandon. That's why I need that, because later she goes to university in Salem :)

Answer:
The fastest and most reasonable route is 4 hours, 6 minutes; 202 miles. The shortest route saves 3 miles but takes 4 minutes longer (click on second route on link map page) The third route is longer and slower and most affected by bad weather. Still, on a fine day, it would be 4 hours 16 minutes.

Salem, Oregon?
Question:
I'm from the east coast and now live here (long story). This place sucks. The weather is horrible (does the sun still exist?), the people here either have a staring problem or are really nosey. The economy is awful. Nothing for anyone under the age of 60 to do. The road systems are unbearable... They need a serious upgrade. (It can take over an hour to get from one side of town to the other!). Plus no one here owns a car that goes over 30 mph apparently. Where are the sports teams around here? Do all seafood restaraunts here carry atlantic salmon only? I thought this was the northwest! I'm about to lose it here! If this is the capitol I can't wait to see what the rest or Oregon has to offer! If you're planning on moving here DONT!

Answer:
I agree, Salem is horrible. I lived in Corvallis for 2 years and have vowed never to go back :) The Willamette Valley/Portland area is Oregon's most populated place and most people, when they think of Oregon, think of those areas. It's rainy, foggy and cloudy a lot of the year. Downright depressing if you ask me. I grew up in Southern Oregon - Medford area. It was still foggy during the winter but not like the valley. But then it got up to 112 degrees in the summer. Now I live in Central Oregon and I LOVE IT. There is sunshine (rough estimate) about 300 days a year if not more. Temps in the summer are about mid 80's to mid 90's. It does snow in the winter, but it's not like the slush they can get in the valley. The snow here is powdery and nice. Even though it snows, the sun still shines. There may not be beaches close, but we have awesome outdoor activities throughout the year. The mighty Cascade Range blocks a lot of the weather from the valley. We don't have a freeway like I-5, all our highways have a 55 mph speed limit but most people break that by about 10 mph. Bend, the largest city in Central Oregon has about 80,000 residents and a college so there is some diversity (at least to me, coming from a small town). There are a lot of transplants from California and I've never noticed people staring. Most everyone I've talked to say that people are really nice here. Sports teams? Ummm, the Portland Trail Blazers? Other than that I'm not sure. UO Ducks in Eugene have a lot of fans, and the OSU Beavers have a pretty decent baseball team. As for fish, I've never even noticed! That's pretty funny, I'll have to check it out. I like to catch my own - can't get any fresher than that! :) Unfortunately, the economy as a whole isn't doing very well. People with jobs are getting laid off and people without jobs can't find one. Central Oregon is no exception. It's pretty competitive. That's about the only thing I don't like. I just wanted to tell you that not all of Oregon is depressingly drizzly. Many people forget that there's an east side of the Cascades. I used to come over here for a dose of sunshine when I lived in Corvallis until I got the bright idea to just move out here! I'm sorry your experience in Oregon so far hasn't been the greatest. The Valley does have beautiful summers, though so stick it out a little longer. There, you have your reading done for the day! Sorry I wrote you a novel!

Can My 2000 Honda Civic make it over the mountains from Northern California to Salem Oregon?
Question:
I have a four-cylinder honda Civic coupe DX w/ AT and I was wondering if it would be okay to drive it from Redding Ca up to Salem Oregon on I-5 over the Siskiyou mountains. My boyfriend has a GMC Canyon, but i wanted to try and take my car to save gas. I know it will be fine once i make it over the Siskiyous, but I wanted your opinion on if you think it would be a good idea. My car is in good shape and only has 65,000 miles on it. Also if you have any tips for me as far as changing gears and such please share. Thanks!

Answer:
The other answers were general in nature with some good driving tips. My answer is very specific to traveling in southern Oregon. 1. Plan to drive early in the day. Avoid the heat by getting over the mountains before noon. You are leaving from Redding, so hit the road no later than 6 a.m. You'll clear the Siskiyous by 9 a.m. and the other mountain passes -- Sexton, Stage, Smith and Canyon -- by noon. 2. Take along a cell phone. Dial 411 for road conditions. The Siskiyous can shut down temporarily due to a major crash. 3. Fuel up in Yreka (before crossing the Siskiyous) and again in Grants Pass (before crossing Sexton, Stage Smith and Canyon mountain passes). This gives you a chance to check your car over, take a restroom break, and reload your personal water supply. 4. Carry TWO supplies of water. Two one-gallon milk jugs for your car. And at least a liter for yourself. Good samaritans have placed water along the mountain passes in areas where cars often overheat but don't expect to find them (summer is a busy traveling season). 5. Finally, don't overload your car. A Honda Civic can clear these mountains just fine. A Honda Civic loaded to the gills will not. College students are notorious for this. The car is loaded from floor to roof with clothing, books, furniture, skis and so on. The driver can't even see out the rear-view window. This is dangerous and really increases the odds you'll have a breakdown on the mountains. Drive safely.

Anyone know of a good place to get a diagnostics test on a car in Eugene, Salem or Portland, Oregon?
Question:
I'm trying to buy a used car and I wanted to get it looked at beforehand. Thanks!

Answer:
Recently when looking at a used car I called the two Volvo dealers in Portland and they both had programs in place to run a diagnostics check and to give a general opinion of the overall condition of the car. The cost was very reasonable. I would suggest you call the local dealers for the car make you are looking at and ask them for a price and time to bring the car in. If the selling party won't let you have someone look at the car before any buying agreement (including price) is made, walk away.

are there any jobs in Salem Oregon for a teen?
Question:
I just turned 16 last month and i cant get my car that i have been wanting since i was a little girl unless i get a job and pay my insurance... dose any one know who is hiring in Salem Oregon??? i have done allot of sports and have volunteered.... i can only work part time because i have school..

Answer:
I live in Salem as well and have applied everywhere with no luck! The only thing you can do it apply lots of places anda don't give up! Fast food places, and some stores at the mall are good places to start as they are least likely to need experienced workers there. Check out craigslist (but be careful of scams). Good Luck!

Where's the best place in Salem, Oregon to sell computer parts?
Question:
I have 3 surge protectors, speakers, etc. I just don't know the best place since I don't have a car. I'll try yellow pages online.

Answer:
Your best bet would be to list them on craigslist http://salem.craigslist.com and/or http://portland.craigslist.com. Both services are free to list on, and people can come to up to pick them up or meet you someplace you decide. You might also join the Yahoo Salem Freecycle group (http://groups.yahoo.com and search for Salem Freecycle Oregon) and ask the group what links they have for selling or bartering things. Then if you have things left over you can offer them to the Freecycle group instead of just dumping them in a landfill. The Freecycle group on the Oregon Coast has a Buy/Sell/Barter group now too, and also a jobs wanted/offered group that have spun off the original one. But it's too far away from Marion County to Coos to offer computer speakers and parts for sale. I'm sure something like that exists in Salem though, just need to know who to ask.

Best & Worst Auto Dealerships- Salem, Oregon?
Question:
Can anyone recommend an auto dealership in/around Salem, Oregon that they have had a good experience with? Anyone had a terrible experience that I should know about? I hate shopping for cars. Not sure what I want yet so the make is not important at this time. I would love some feedback, thanks!

Answer:
Yes indeed. If you want to get treated right get a good deal on a great car truck or suv, I highly recommend Ron Tonkin in Portland. They have been voted No. 3 in the 100 best places to work for in the Portland area. They are not a typical car lot. They have new and used in just about every make you can think of. You will never regret visiting any one of the locations they have. I have had a great experience over and over. I recommend them to every one I meet. Have Fun

How long are auto claims in Oregon valid for?-ANYONE WITH LEGAL KNOWLEDGE OF AUTO CLAIMS PLEASE ANSWER!!!?
Question:
I was in an accident on Oct 12, 2003 in Salem Oregon, a little under 4 years ago. I was driving and was rear ended causing my vehicle to be pushed into the vehicle in front of me. My 2001 Dodge Neon which was totaled. I had severe whiplash had to seek medical attention and couldn't go to work. I had liability insurance and my insurance paid me NOTHING (I had Country Insurance) but paid out the other parties. They told me I was at fault, because in Oregon if you rearend someone it is automatically your fault. I still have pain in my neck and was involved in a similar accident recently BUT I was the person in the front and my insurance (Farmers)told me the party that was liable was actually the vehicle that initially caused the whole accident the car in the end. SO I called Country insurance to see who was liable for the accident in 04 and they said me! I explained to them that this wasn't correct. Should I get a lawyer. How long do I have to reopn the case? HELP
