Where can I find the best deal on a long-term rental car in Portland, Oregon?
Question:
I'll be going back to visit for 5 weeks from Mid-January to Mid-February and staying in Beaverton. I'm returning home for winter vacation from my university job in Korea. I've tried to get a car included with my airfare from travel agencies but they don't have any for that long of a rental. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My round-trip airfare is close to $2,000 alone.

Answer:
Check with each of the car rental companies to see if any of them have any long term specials. It's important to compare rates with several companies to make sure that you're getting the best possible price. One of the best things to try is to use a car rental discount code. There are hundreds of membership programs and professional associations that offer car rental discount codes to their members. You can find a list of car rental discount codes for 8 major car rental companies, at http://www.best-car-rental-tips.com/discount-codes.html

Portland Oregon visit for two days. Is it easier with or without a car?
Question:
I will be travelling around Oregon for about two weeks flying in from NY. Spending the first 2 days in Portland. Is it easy to get around Portland without a car, or should I rent the car at the airport for the entire trip?

Answer:
The main section of Portland does have a great public transportation system but for any towns outside the hub, a car is needed. The most relavant reason for renting a car is because the rates are better by the week than by the day. If you rent the car for a full 2 weeks the two days you were trying to save money on will most likely not cost you anything extra (the 5 days would be more than a week rental). And there is very good parking (free) in most of Portland, so having the car is always a good idea.

Portland Oregon Car Shopping?
Question:
With the tight ecomomy I'm curious if anyone has gotten a really great deal from an Portland Or. car dealer. It's time for me to start shopping around. Thanks

Answer:
I looked around on 82nd Street more recently and wow bad idea. Stay away from the slums over there. If you buy a used car I would get a CarFax done and do your research on kbb so you know what the car is worth. Dealerships will usually give you a rotten deal because they have to make money too. Buy from a private seller if possible but once again be smart and do your research. Know what you are buying. Make sure you go for a good test drive, ask questions and take it to a trusty place to get it checked out. Its okay to make a deal and negotiate with the seller. Be confident with your purchase.

Can I drive a car in US Portland/oregon State with Indian Driving Licence ?
Question:
i will be staying only for 2 months...on business visa.

Answer:
If you are on a business Visa and your license is current and valid in your country of origin, you may apply for a temporary international driving permit. Visitors from foreign countries may drive in Oregon using a foreign-issued driver license. Visitors must carry the foreign driver license and, in addition, it is suggested that visitors carry an International Driving Permit issued by officials in their country of residence. It is not mandatory that visitors have the International Driving Permit; it is merely a suggestion to aid law enforcement officials and others who need to know the actual content of the license. The International Driving Permit is a translation of the foreign license into the nine official languages of the United Nations, including English. Since an International Driving Permit is not a driver license, merely a translation of the foreign driver license, it does not authorize any driving privileges. You may not drive in Oregon carrying just an International Driving Permit.

Portland Oregon without a car?
Question:
I'm planning to move to Portland, Oregon and I've heard very good things about the public transit there. So I was wondering what parts of Portland would be ideal for someone without a vehicle? I was trying to get a place in the fairless area downtown where the max is free, but apparently everyone already beat me to it as all the apartments are packed.

Answer:
It's all a matter of price. Personally, I wouldn't want to call downtown Portland home; it's way too expensive. I've noticed that the farther you move East from city center, the better the rent prices are. If you're looking to rent, but if you are, look to east metro, Gresham and Troutdale. You are right that Portland has a good transit system, and it's ever expanding. MAX already has a Blue, Red and Yellow line. The Blue Line is the main line, traveling 33 miles from Gresham to Hillsboro. The Red Line runs from the Airport to either downtown or Beaverton, and the newest, the Yellow Line, runs from downtown to the Expo Center in North Portland. Currently in progress is the Green Line, which will run from downtown to Clackamas Town Center mall, slated for opening in the Fall of 2009. The busses also go everywhere in the metro area. Tri-Met stands for Tri-Metro, which represents the 3 counties it serves. Multnomah, which is mostly the city of Portland, Washington, which is west of the city, and Clackamas, which is south and east. There's also C-Tran, the bus system that serves Clark County, Washington. That includes Vancouver, the city just across the Columbia River from Portland. Some of their busses come into Downtown during the rush hour. Some of the busses go to transit centers that are also served by the MAX, so there's really no limit as to where the transit system can take you in and around the city. So you have a wide variety of areas that you could call home. I hope I was able to make your selection process a little easier, and I hope you enjoy Portland!!

Roads from Portland Oregon to Bend oregon in Winter?
Question:
I was wondering what shape the roads are usually in during the month of December like around the week before xmas. We are thinking of flying to Portland and then renting a car to visit family in Bend Oregon. Is this a major road we would take or only small mountain roads? We are trying to figure out the cheapest way to get from riverside Ca to Bend oregon for Xmas and flying to a major city seems more logical. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:
The mountain passes are almost always open and well plowed. However, "well-plowed" means expect to chain up and follow winter driving rules. The standard route from PDX airport to Bend is US 26 over Mount Hood—actually over the base of it and numerous foothills (first map). It's four lanes in the lowlands, and mostly two lanes over the mountains and through Central Oregon. It is a major route, but it's going through mountains, so it's twisty. However, 55 mph is realistic and normal (except for the occasional towns—Sandy, Madras, Redmond), even when snowy. Two lanes is suitable for the amount of traffic the road sees. Once on the east side of the Cascade Crest, there is much less snow and ice, even in December. If you have little experience driving in snow and ice, consider taking I-84 east out to Hwy 197 (second map) or even Hwy 97 (third map) past The Dalles. This adds an hour or two to the journey, though if there is a traffic jam due to heavy snow over the passes, it might break even.

How much does it cost to rent a car or take a taxi in Portland Oregon?
Question:
I was wanting to go down to Oregon for a day and wanted to see how much it costs to take a taxi from the train station to Voodoo Donuts? Either that or how much does a rental car cost for the day? We're taking the train from Tacoma not the airport

Answer:
A taxi from the airport to SW 3rd will cost about $20. A rental car might be as little as $30, but it would be a bottom-of-the-line vehicle. Parking can be challenging in that area. The best way is to take MAX from the airport ($2.30) and exit at the second or third stop after crossing the Willamette River, Skidmore Fountain, about a 35 minute ride. Then walk two blocks west on Ankeny Street. Portland city blocks are much smaller than most cities, so it's an easy and interesting walk shown here http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=800+Northwest+6t h+Avenue,+Portland,+OR+97209+(Portland+Union+Station)&daddr=22+So uthwest+3rd+Avenue,+Portland,+OR+97204-2713+(Voodoo+Doughnut)&hl= en&geocode=Fdq3tgIdOhmw-CHwKy6cqRDiWymP7HXj_wmVVDF7MvrQQhksQA%3BF RiftgId9Sew-CF170PzaCl9JSltIWIkBwqVVDHptmhrWGvhVw&mra=ls&dirflg=w &sll=45.52577,-122.675595&sspn=0.007201,0.013078&ie=UTF8&ll=45.52 5758,-122.675335&spn=0.007201,0.013078&z=17
