What kind of maintenance does my car need? Question: I don't have much money and I admit I've been neglecting the maintenance on my car. I have a 1990 Toyota Celica GT with 130k miles on it. The guy before always did all the maintenance on it but after he sold it to me in 2003, I think I had one tune-up done on it, oil changes, repaired valve gaskets that were liking oil, and did a front end alignment. Other than that, I haven't done a whole lot on it. I think I need a tune up. I am wondering if it will drive 400 miles each way to and from a place in Oregon. But I dont want to ask the mechanic if my car can do that, because I'm afraid they will say they have to charge a lot in order for my car to make that trip. What do I do? How do I know whether it can make the trip or not? and also, does anyone know how much a tuneup for my car might cost? The trip is from Portland, OR to Ontario, OR and back. Thank you. Answer: Toyota's are usually very dependable and require very little attention. Your car need a tune-up if you notice that yuou are losing power or fuel mileage. Most tune-ups last for 100,000 miles. Have your timing belt checked, use synthetic oil, READ your manual 3-4 times to understand the workings of your car. Have your idle air control valve and throttle body cleaned to SHOWROOM NEW. THis will save your fuel mileage, and increase intervals between oil changes, and protect your converter nad O2 sensors. Most cars are driven with only partial opening of the throttle body, and fuel mixture is controlled by the IAC valve. SO FAR, SO GOOD!!!! |
