What should I do while I'm in Portland?
Question:
Me and my friend are visiting another friend in a couple days out in Portland. He's working during the week days so we are looking for things to do during this time. I've been to Portland before, but I'm still not very familiar with the city. We're looking to do some exploring, visit some breweries, maybe hit up some music scenes, and anything else in between. Where are some good spots on the coast to visit from Portland? What are some areas we should check out? We have a car if we need and will probably use the MAX or bus system from Lake Oswego. Any insight or ideas is appreciated!

Answer:
For breweries, you should check out: Deschutes Brewery - NW 11th & Davis Rogue - NW 14th & Flanders Bridgeport Brewery - NW 13th & Marshall Lucky Lab - NW 19th & Quimby And (honorable mention) Henrys' 12th Street Tavern - NW 12th & Burnside - they have 103 beers ON TAP!! For music shops, I'd go to Everyday Music on 14th & West Burnside (not broadway like the lady above said, I promise). Also Jackpot on 9th & W Burnside, and 2nd Ave Records on 2nd & SW Stark. Live music venues are going to be subject to what is in town and what you want to see. Grab a Wilammette Weekly for a list of shows. Venues that will also have music regardless of WW are: Kells Irish Pub - 2nd & SW Pine Thristy Lion Pub - 2nd & SW Ash Ash Street Saloon - 3rd & SW Ash Doug Fir - 6th & E Burnside Dantes - 3rd & W Burnside Jimmy Maks (jazz club) - 10th & NW Davis. I would go to Cannon Beach and visit Ecola State Park, just 2 miles north of the town.

snow tires and lightweight cars?
Question:
I have a 98 honda civic with all season tires and live in Oswego,NY where there is a ton of lake effect. I've mentioned wanting to get snow tires to 2 people who used to work with mechanics and they told me not to waste my money. Apparently snow tires do not make much of a difference on lightweight cars like mine. I tend to have a lot more wheel spin starting from a stop than other cars (when the roads have a bit of snow buildup) and have to go 10 miles under when most people speed like its nothing. Of course almost everyone has an SUV here. Its an automatic which I've been told is worse in snow than a standard as well. So my question is- has anyone heard about that or had any experiences? I really don't want to get snow tires if it won't make enough difference to make it worth it.

Answer:
Winter tires are not like All-Season tires and have special rubber compounds designed to improve traction, handling and braking in all cold weather conditions, not just ice and snow. Winter Tires are designed to deliver safety and control in snow, ice, and cold weather conditions. Many people think that all-season tires can deliver this same performance, but this is not true. The superior traction that winter tires deliver, as much as 25 to 50 percent increase over all-season tires, can very well be the margin you need to stop in time or to turn and avoid trouble. The Rubber Manufacturers Association has gone so far as to set a new standard for winter traction.

i will be student in portland state university i will do master in mechanical engineering?
Question:
i know its located in downtown so would u plz tell me how is the university and the dowtown area . and also i am looking for one bedroom apartment its ok if its pricy i can buy maximam aroud 1000 dolar if its safe and nice , i read alot of people posts and also urs and most of them said lake oswego , multomah village are nice so could u plz tell me more about it and i will not have a car there so is there a train or bus form those place, i am looking for nice calm place and safe with nice neiphore also i know the housing of portland state university is located in downtown so what do u think , i dont want tolive in downtown if its not safe as i said i like nice calm place also if u know any nice condo or apartment in nice area tell me plz i wll be so thankful i will be alone there and i need help before i go there thank u bye

Answer:
The school is definitely a commuter school. My sister-in-law just graduated from their Mechanical Engineering Master's program actually. If I had $1000.00 to spend on rent, I would chose to live in a condo in either the Pearl District or NW 23rd area. They are close, and there is a street car that goes right from the Pearl and NW Portland into the Portland State Campus. Lake Oswego is way too far away and frankly, so is Multnomah Village. You would need a car if you lived out there. Definitely check out the areas I mentioned on Craigslist and the other links I put below. SW Downtown by the school would be good too because a lot of students live there but I would rather live in the Pearl or NW because it's safe, there are a lot of young people, lots and lots of stuff to do and there is the Portland Street car that takes you directly to the school. Good luck!

Moving to Oregon and wondering about some things. ?
Question:
I am interested in moving to Oregon this summer. I was looking at places near Portland because I'm assuming that's where most of the fun is. I am a college student pursuing a degree in Exercise Science. I'm just looking to get away for the summer. I was looking at places like Lake Oswego. I will not be taking a car with me so I was wondering if there was a bus that ran from Lake Oswego to Portland. I want to do this entire stay without a car because I'm coming clear from Pennsylvania. What is the nightlife like at Lake Oswego and Portland. Thanks. Is there any fitness centers in Lake Oswego? I am going to need a job and I was hoping to get some experience for my Exercise Science degree. I looked up apartments in Lake Oswego and I can afford it. So its not a problem with how expensive it is there.

Answer:
Find a business in Lake Oswego: http://lakeoswegochamber.chambermaster.com/directory/j sp/busdir/Search.jsp?ccid=279&aname=1 Trimet and the Max train line and trolley lines run everywhere in the Portland metro area. http://trimet.org/

Answer:
Take a rain coat and umbrella and don't tell strangers so much information about yourself. And how can you apply to a school and not know where it's located? Don't they have maps there? I don't think you are going to fit in. Better keep quiet the first few weeks.

IME Oregon Workers compensation appoint 195miles ONE way.?
Question:
I just received a letter from the Workers compensation company. First off today is December 3rd 2011 and my appointment date is December 20th 2011. I live in Eastern Oregon and the appointment is scheduled all the way in Lake Oswego Oregon, which is 194miles one way...So it would take us approx. 3hrs to get there (give or take)...also I dont drive so my fiance is going to have to take time off of work to take me there. My question is: What are the chances of the IC being able to find an IME near me and also will I be able to reschedule the appointment? They have me scheduled for 5 days before Christmas.I know they arent going to care about this...but my 5yr old son will..so what are the chances of them being able to schedule me in for early January? Being in the car for that long KILLS my back....I have 3 slipped discs and a lot more problems. Thanks for your response in advance! -Summer

Answer:
i dont know why they chose somewhere so far summer. i can imagine how hectic that is going to be for you both. what i suggest is that you make an appeal and see what can be done. you can contact one of these consultants and see what other advice they have for you. i really hope it works out and good luck on your wedding http://www.workerscompensationsettlement.net/contact-us. htm
