Roads from Portland Oregon to Bend oregon in Winter?
Question:
I was wondering what shape the roads are usually in during the month of December like around the week before xmas. We are thinking of flying to Portland and then renting a car to visit family in Bend Oregon. Is this a major road we would take or only small mountain roads? We are trying to figure out the cheapest way to get from riverside Ca to Bend oregon for Xmas and flying to a major city seems more logical. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:
The mountain passes are almost always open and well plowed. However, "well-plowed" means expect to chain up and follow winter driving rules. The standard route from PDX airport to Bend is US 26 over Mount Hood—actually over the base of it and numerous foothills (first map). It's four lanes in the lowlands, and mostly two lanes over the mountains and through Central Oregon. It is a major route, but it's going through mountains, so it's twisty. However, 55 mph is realistic and normal (except for the occasional towns—Sandy, Madras, Redmond), even when snowy. Two lanes is suitable for the amount of traffic the road sees. Once on the east side of the Cascade Crest, there is much less snow and ice, even in December. If you have little experience driving in snow and ice, consider taking I-84 east out to Hwy 197 (second map) or even Hwy 97 (third map) past The Dalles. This adds an hour or two to the journey, though if there is a traffic jam due to heavy snow over the passes, it might break even.

Answer:
Speak to a lawyer, bring all the paperwork, he can contact the court to see what the disposition is of the case. That you were given a bail amount suggests that you were charged already, and it could take months if not a year or more before it actually goes to trial. On the other hand, the fact that your bail was refunded suggest perhaps the case has been dismissed. Talk to a lawyer.

How do I get the national disaster act to pay for automotive insurance deductible due to massive Hail storm?
Question:
In Deschutes county (Bend Oregon area) on June 12th, 2006 a major hail storm runined many cars. A friend of mine is getting his automotive insurance deductible paid by the national disaster act. The insurance he's going through is Safeco, but for some reason my insurance agency ( Nationwide) knows nothing about this program paying for deductibles. So is there any web sites I can go to for information on how to get Nationwide to do the same thing Safeco car insurance is doing? I need help, I'm in the process of getting my car fixed and this deduction getting paid by a program would really help me out.

Answer:
Contact your local Emergency Management office - http://www.deschutes.org/go/government/departments/sheriff's-offi ce/emergency-management They should have all the guidance you need. Good luck!

How are the winter weather conditions along Highway 101 from Oregon to California?
Question:
I'm going to be driving from Bend, Oregon to San Jose, California in mid-January. I've driven the route before going highway 97 to I-5, but with the mountains through that route I'm worried I'll have to chain up which is bad for two reasons: One, that I am a girl and I don't have snow chains nor do I know how to use them and two, that I will be traveling with my newborn son (who hasn't even been born yet), so he will be tiny and I prefer to take the safest route there is, even if it means an added 3 hours of drive time. For those of you that have traveled this route from Oregon to California.. Is highway 101 from Newport Oregon to San Jose California a safer alternative for winter driving? Are there areas that receive snow, and if so, how much? Is it likely I'd need chains during mid January? What conditions do I need to watch out for when driving this route? I'm not traveling for leisure--or else I wouldn't be doing it at all. My husband is overseas and I came home to his family in Oregon to have the baby while he's away. I have to be back in Virginia by February when he gets home, and I have to first drive my car to California to be shipped back home to Virginia so that my sister and I (and baby) can fly to Virginia and pick up my car when we get there. Any advice is appreciated!

Answer:
Wow. A lot to consider here. Mid January is a tough call for you no matter which route you choose. Starting in Bend, I don't see how you avoid at least the possibility of snow on some pass. Here are the options I see: 1) Take 97 to Weed then I-5 South. You only need a little luck to be essentially home free after Mt Shasta City. The roads are generally in good shape, not that curvy, and if it does snow, it will be more powdery and easy to drive without chains. Can someone caravan with you, at least to Weed? 2) If you are set on heading over to 101, I would recommend the Lake of the Woods Hwy 140 from K-Falls to Medford as your route over the Cascades. Again, a generally straight, easy road to travel if it is snowing. I would avoid Willamette Pass (58) or Santiam Pass (20) or the Diamond Lake Hwy (138) if it will be snowing. 3) Hwy 101 can have its own winter challenges. First, it will add A LOT of time to your trip, certainly more than 3 hours. Second, while snow is less likely, torrential rain often causes mudslides and wash outs that temporarily close the road in parts of N CA. If it were me, without chains, but otherwise good tires, I would do the 97 to 5 route and hope for the best. Make sure you will have daylight for the entire 97 part. That route is the fastest AND the least likely to cause problems for you in snowy weather. Being east of the Cascades for most of that route is your friend. Start early. Pack extra food, water, and blankets. Expect a jack-knifed semi to cause a long delay. If it is snowing in Bend the morning you plan to leave, expect a slow trip to Klamath Falls, but then more normal speeds as you go south. Try to convince someone to caravan with you to Weed. Have a plan to stop for the night if you are delayed - like in Redding. Check the ODOT web cameras before you leave. They have pass cameras everywhere.

There is a restuarant in Bend,OR that does not accept cash. Isn't this rediculus?
Question:
Even though this restuarant in Bend,OR started a one year experiment of only accepting credit/debit cards and no cash I hope that other restuarants around the USA don't follow this trend. This restuarant in Bend,Oregon accpets cash again. Every time I dine out I don't like to pay with a credit card because I have enough stuff on my credit card. Debit cards are very high in identity theft in my area. I live in the Southern California area. I hope that the no cash policy doesn't start here. Here is a copy of the article of the restuarant in Bend that experimented with this no cash policy. http://www.creditcards.com/No-cash-businesses.php I'm in my late 20s and still dine out with my parents in their late 50s. My parents feel that its much safer to pay with cash in terms of credit/debit fruad and identitiy theft. If more restuarants follow this policy me, my parents and others are going to be very upset. I'm worried. have a very small bussiness where my customers pay me with cash. I use that cash to put gas in my car, get coffee, eat out and buy groceries with. 3 minutes ago Some frineds of mine can't get bank accounts so they cash their paycheck at a grocery store or check cashing place. If restaurants and eating places only accept credti and debit people could file lawsuits that those without bank accounts or credit cards could not dine there. If restuarants handle your card they are also exposed to germs. There are people who don't have credit or debit cards. Mall Food courts get 50% of thier bussiness with cash. Some don't even take credit cards and are cash only. I disagree with Lisa A;s answer. Anybody that thinks this is okay is out of their mind. As for mall food courts many food court patrons are mall employees who use check cashing stores and young kids who don't have credit or debit cards.

Answer:
I wonder if this restaurant had been robbed recently. That's the only reason I can see them not wanting to have cash in hand. Credit card companies actually charge merchants a fee for each transaction, plus it takes longer to pay with a card. This was just silly and I can only see paranoia over theft as their only rationale. As long as the government is still minting cash, I don't see this catching on.

are neons illegal in central oregon?
Question:
Are under car neon lights or LED lights illegal in bend-central oregon? if they are, then are in-side neons illegal. i wanted to trick out my viper:)

Answer:
Neons are only illegal when they are on while driving. This is true for just about all states (I'm told Missouri is the only forgiving state when it comes to neons on while driving, allowing a couple colors to be used). They aren't illegal if you are sitting in a parking lot. Pretty much true for all states. Same goes for interior neon in most states, although this really depends on where the neon is and how visible it is. The biggest issue with neon is impersonating an emergency vehicle, so you'll have problems regardless of neon location and when you use it if you use red or blue.
