Questions Related to midwest, city cars

Provided By Y! Answers

What's it like to live in New York City for a kid? How do they get to school? Where do they live?
Question:
I live in a small town in the midwest and the biggest city i've ever been to is Chicago a couple times. I'm curious in knowing what life is like in a big town.Does everyone have cars or does everybody take taxis. Where i live, everybody has a car at sixteen and most people have houses with big backyards in the country. If you can explain it to me, that would be awesome.

Answer:
1. in manhatten its rare to own a car. theres never any parking! and putting it in a public garage costs like $165 a month. we either walk, take the subway, which is just as expensive ($81 a month to ride the train!) or the taxi, which is well, even more expensive. 2. when a kid turns 16, they are given a metrocard for the subway. there are no back yards, unless u live in the other 4 boroughs. nyc has 5 boroughs, the one everyone knows is manhattan. the farther u get from it, the buildings turn into houses, and there are actually back yards! 3. god being a teen in a nyc public high school.... is like a while other experience. they try to make it safe, but well its just not. gangs, drugs, weapons are normal, so there is a branch to the nyc police department for school security. some high schools have metal detectors. there are cliques, with rich kids only, poor kids, the gangsters, goths/emo's, so this is normal. overall though school wasnt too bad. the trips were boring, we always went to places tourists did and we already knew about them. im currently a student teacher in an elementary schol in harlem, and the kids are angels though the neighborhood scares me to death. The only thing a student in nyc is deprived of is school funding and a nice back yard to play in.

I am traveling from Port st Lucie Fl to Midwest City Ok on Jan 14 to Jan 19.how is road, weatherconditionsthen?
Question:
I have driven in light snow conditions one time last year. I am concerned if there will be snow or ice on the main roads for travel. we will be passing through memphis, TN. I don't have chains & I have a hyundai 99 elantra front wheel drive car. Should I get chains, snow tires or keep the ones I have. They are just 2 months old good condition. Any places along the way in higher elevation that will have fresh snow to play in not far off the beaten path & safe to drive to?

Answer:
I would wait until a few days out, check the weather in different places. Are you coming on 44? Unless there's an ice storm in MO, you will probably be alright in MO and OK.

Given the news of the worst auto sales month since 1942, would a McCain spending freeze destroy the midwest?
Question:
The sales numbers are in. In the last month, GM sales are down 45%, Ford sales are down 30%, and Chrysler sales are down 35%. GM says, figuring in population growth, these were the worst sales industry-wide since 1942. All American auto manufacturers exected a lean year in 2009, but it is hard to imagine they planned funding for this. Ford has enough money on hand to exist until late 2009. GM and Chrysler were looking to merge to survive before this latest bad news came in. All three have fuel efficient small cars scheduled to role out in 2010-2011. All three are hoping for another $25B or maybe more in government loans in 2009 to help them survive until those cars hit the market. 10% of America's workforce works for the automakers. As Obama's plan is based on swelling the workforce to pay for his spending, it is pretty clear an Obama administration would loan them the money to get their cars out. McCain on the other hand wants to freeze any addtional spending and is counts heavily on the advice of Phil Gramm, a free enterprise zealot. If McCain wins, could we see the auto industry allowed to collapse based on the free enterpriser idea that "something better will take it's place"? Is that reasonable if the banks and government are going to be very hesitant to loan out seed money to new businesses? Will the uber rich rush to put their money into risky ventures like the midwest unionized states would be at that point or will they invest overseas? With no American manufacturers would our car money join our gas money in heading overseas? Finally, what would happen to the cities of the midwest if the car manufacturers closed? Would theirs kids schools have adequate funding? Would the burden of the tax shortfalls shift to other workers and businesses in those communities driving out more businesses and workers? Could we see the collapse of several mid-western communities? Rob - Do you honestly think a bailout of the auto industry would be excluded from a McCain spending freeze? Please at least try to be honest. iamsuranovi - I am calling BS. McCain was very clear in the debate that he was talking about an accross the board freeze in new spending. And anyhow I am sure employees of Lehman Bros would suggest that saving the auto manufacturers might very well be considered a discretionary choice if left to a republican braintrust. PJ and several others have put up a very legit argument that the manufactures have been making the same ill-conceived crap for years and deserve to fail. I don't disagree with that and I think that is the logic McCain would use to let them fail. I do think that you have to look at where that leaves the economy. Where are we going to be if 10% of our workforce goes on unemployment? What will happen to the schools of kids in those states? Fromage a Trois - Obama is talking about pumping government revenue into small businesses via SBA loans to create alternative energy jobs that cannot be outsourced.

I was really wondering that as well. GREAT QUESTION

Which big city should I move to for war winters and affordable living without a car?
Question:
Hey guys I hate the cold weather in New York, and I would like to move to a state with warm winters with as littlle snow as possible. Also I prefer a city with low living expenses, therefore I dont want California or any city in the far west coast. I'm ok with cities in the midwest, east coast, north and south--just no westcoast. But most importantly I need a city with a lot of restaurants and stores close to each other where I can live without a car. A city where I can walk everywhere with warm weather, or a city with a fantastic public transport system would be the ideal living for me. Or a city best to drive a moped instead of a car. THANK U FOR UR HELP, ur suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
Consider New Orleans. The city center (French Quarter, Central Business District, Warehouse District, Marigny Triangle) is walkable, using a moped is very practical, and public transit is good if not fantastic: www.norta.com. New Orleans has LOTS to do and a great restaurant scene. Also lots of shopping. The city stays green all year most years as it rarely freezes and almost never snows. We pay for the mild winters with hot, humid summers - particularly in July & August. Good luck, whererver you decide to go!

How do I make pickup and deliver a suit to me?
Question:
Hi I have moved from a city in north east to move to a city in Midwest. Now, I forgot a 3 piece suit in northeast. I have a few friends in northeast city but they dont have a car to go to the nearest post office. Is there a cheap way for me to get the suit mailed to me? A pickup and deliver service maybe? Any suggestions?

Answer:
You don't need to go to the Post Office to pick up a package addressed to your place of residence. The mailman/woman will deliver, that's part of the service. The Post Office will also pick your suit up from your friends place. All they have to do is call the Post Office to arrange pick-up. If you don't like the Post Office, have your friends send it UPS. The United Parcel Service doesn't want you coming to their place of business. If you are not home when the parcel arrives, you may need to call them and arrange a delivery time. UPS will also pick-up from your friends place. Good luck

Where can I park my car in New York city while i am in europe??
Question:
I live in the midwest and i am thinking on driving to NEW YOrk City to fly out from there to go to Europe on Vacation. And I was Wondering where i could leave my car there for a couple of days without having to pay so much when i come back.. anybody have any suggestions??? thanks ladies and gentlemen

Answer:
I think it would be really expensive to park at or near an NYC airport. Those airports are huge, though. Try looking on the yahoo or some other travel site or find the website for each airport to get the cost. Have fun on your trip.

Why do employers look down upon not owning a car if the building is easily accessible to mass transit?
Question:
Do non-drivers face job discrimination? If the job does not involve driving and one can easily get to the location via public transportation, what's the issue? I recently had to accept a parking pass after an interview because I didn't want to disclose my situation. Is it like this everywhere in America? I live in fairly large city in the Midwest. It takes decent income to have a car. In this day and age it might be smarter to ditch the car, in my opinion.

Answer:
Employers discriminate on EVERYTHING nowdays. Public transportation is not reliable, and most places dont offer public transit 24/7. To an employer, this is unacceptable because they want you to be "accessable". If you dont tell them, and it interferes with your work, you can get fired. But then again, millions of people use public transportation every day to and from work. Most employers dont have a problem with it, unless you are working days or hours where theres no transportation available.

Why are farmers, especially in the Midwest so right-wing and against welfare and social programs?
Question:
Farmers who make less than $200,000 a year get a check from the U.S. Government for $50,000 and some get paid NOT to farm. If they have crop damage they get a check from the U.S. Government. They get all kinds of "welfare" from the U.S. Government but they vote Republican and vote for candidates who want to slash Food Stamps, Head Start and other social programs for poor people. They are against Hispanics getting Driver's Licenses because they're illegal even though this prevents them from getting car insurance and when they have a car accident in the city, they go back to Mexico and the person they hit is left holding the bag. Don't say they deserve it because one farmer feeds 351 people because we can get grain imported from Egypt, and other produce imported from Mexico. In fact, go to Wal-Mart. They already do get their produce from Mexico.

Answer:
First off people that live in the Midwest, not just farmers tend to be pretty conservative. Conservatives by far tend to be religious, and don't believe in abortion, gay marriage, and government supported stem cell research along with some other issues that the left is always trying to push. Just because the left supports a few things that are helpful to the farmers in the Midwest it doesn't mean that they have to eat the whole package. Liberals are pretty good for saying that if they aren't getting votes from some segment of the population that it means those people want poor people to starve, and old people to lose there social security, that is just bull. Most people including conservatives believe that welfare is a good thing; it just shouldn't be a permanent thing. People sometimes run into trouble and need help but they shouldn't expect the tax payer to pay for them to sit on their buts permanently. The reason the Dems have lost much of the mid-west is because they support too many extreme special interest. I don't know how you can claim that the Midwest is against educational programs like headstart. I'm living in Wichita Kansas and I don't think they have a school district out here that doesn't have a head start program. When I lived in New Orleans they had a few programs but they were so under funded because of the ridiculous number of people on welfare that it was unlikely that you could get a child in the program. Maybe the reason people in the Midwest are so darned conservative is because people in the Midwest typically have a job, and when you are earning money and paying taxes you tend to care a little more how those tax dollars are spent. At least the farmers that you like to scoff at in the Midwest are a benefit to this country. I don't mind if some of my tax dollars go to the people that our growing our food supply. Tell me what am I getting for my tax dollars that are supporting people that refuse to carry their own weight? Second I don't know where you get off accusing the Midwest of hating Hispanics. It seems there are a lot of people on the West Coast that aren't very warm to Hispanics. There is too much prejudice all over this country. You have some gall putting blame for prejudice on someone just because they don't agree with your politics. Yes it may cost us a few subsidies to keep farming viable and profitable in the United States. The food many times could be grown somewhere else cheaper, but do we really want to get to the point that we are dependent on someone else for our food. We are already dependent on other countries for our oil, and isn't that a great deal. Also you’re pointing out that Wal-Mart has produce from Mexico shows how ignorant you are. Anyone with a brain knows that different crops grow in different regions. Most of the produce that you find in Wal-Mart is still from California, Florida, and Texas, but some crops do grow better in the far south region. Try to plant a Mango tree in your yard. Also some crops will still do well in Mexico and Central America when they are out of season in the US.

We have a fairly large pole barn and a man stopped by to ask about storing 6-8 antique cars.?
Question:
Can someone tell me what would be a fair charge per month. We live in the midwest in a small city... Thank You

Answer:
First, call your insurance agent and ask about the cost for liability insurance. If your pole barn catches fire, for instance, and all the cars are damaged..... your exposure could be pretty substantial. Once you have covered that expense, add whatever extra sum you feel makes renting worth the trouble.
