Do you like my story? Question: The Scarlet Carnation
Tumbleweeds danced frivolously across the desolate field adjacent to my home. The grass, green as ever, swayed ever so slightly with the wind.
Starlings twittered a playful tune, not a care in the world.
If only I could inconsiderably relate.
The only sound I perceived was the muffled hum of voices downstairs. Voices I did not want to hear, talking about me I was certain
Sitting on my windowsill, scrutinizing the nearly abandoned field was just about all I could do. Normally it was swarming with people, but not today, or, presumably ever again. It was the very last time I would be in here, and I had to treasure it. How I wished I didn’t have to leave my warm, cozy bed, the beautiful luscious field, and nearly all of my belongings. The only things I would have left to remind me of my home were my eight year old sister, Grace, and a scarlet carnation, the state flower of Ohio, which I had picked from my garden just two days ago for my mother. It was her favorite flower.
“Hello Isabella”
I jumped.
Hadn’t they ever heard of knocking? I turned around and beheld a short, plump, bald man with a mustache that curled at the ends. He wore red suspenders and a black sports coat that did not match at all. The man’s face was round and fat, with a large number of pimples and bug eyes.
“My name is Mr. Paulson. I am from the government. Since your mother has passed you are not permitted to stay in this house any longer. We have decided, and you are to go along with this decision, that since you are twelve now, you are old enough to work, so we’re sending you to work as a servant at the Carter home in Bedford, Indiana.”
“But that’s so far from Mansfield!”
“That is where you are needed, and unless you would rather be dumped on the street, I suggest you cooperate and act like a proper young lady.”
“ Grace will be coming with me too right?”
“I’m sorry, but Grace is too young. She will be sent to St. Francis orphanage Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.”
“Philadelphia! That’s all the way on the other side of Ohio! I need to be with my sister!”
“St. Francis is the closest orphanage to here. It is a wonderful orphanage. They will teach Grace manners and other essentials.”
“But why can’t she come with me? I’ll take care of her on my own. We will cause no trouble I promise!”
‘I’m sorry, but Mrs. Carter specifically requested one girl no younger than twelve. Grace is only eight. Now come with me, the cab is waiting outside. ”
When I got downstairs, Grace was there waiting for me.
“Grace, we will be together no longer. I am being sent to work, and you are going to an orphanage. I’m so sorry.”
“Will I ever see you again.”
“I don’t know, but let’s hope.”
I took her in my arms for the last time. We stood there, embracing each other for the last moments had together. I never wanted to let go.
The taxi cab ride was the longest, most depressing ride I had ever experienced. We drove at a snail’s pace, so it took us forever. With absolutely no view whatsoever, it can get considerably tedious just staring out the window, which was just about all I did the entire ride. We were on the highway where all you saw were cars speeding by and miles and miles of greenery.
I sat and stared out the window, hoping that by some miracle, the Carters would call and say they didn’t need me and I would be sent to St. Francis orphanage. I would be with Grace and we might find a kind family to adopt us. But that never happened. No one ever called. In my hand I clutched my scarlet carnation. I would never let it go.
The Carter house was not at all what I had expected. We pulled up to a large, black gate. The driver rang the bell.
“Can I help you?” said a voice from inside a speaker attached to the gate.
“Yes I’m here with your new servant, Miss Isabella Rose.”
“Ah yes. Please come in.”
The colossal gates opened and in we drove. What a yard they had. The driveway was lined with gorgeous flowers. Daffodils, geraniums, carnations, and much more. There was a magnificent dolphin shaped fountain and a splendid, intricately carved replica of Michelangelo’s David. The grass was neatly cut and a beautiful green color. It was like a dream. But the inside of the house was even grander.
The floors were a magnificent marble and a dazzling chandelier hung from the tremendous ceiling. The staircase was amazing. It wound all the way around and was carpeted with a royal blue carpet trimmed with gold. This mansion was the most divine place I had ever been.
If only Grace could have been here for this wonderful sight. She would have been overjoyed. Poor little thing, sent to live in an orphanage. She is probably crying by her bed right now. I miss her so much.
“Hello miss, you must be Isabella.”
“Yes.”
“Pleased to meet you. I am Ben the butler.”
“Pleased to meet you Ben.”
“May I take your coat?”
“Yes please. Thank you”
“You’re welcome.”
Ben was tall and thin. His hair was short, black and neatly combed. He wore
a Black tuxedo that fit nicely. He looked to be about twenty years old. I liked Ben.
“May I show you to your room miss?”
“Call me Bella.”
“Well Bella, may I shoe you to your room?”
“Yes. Thank you.”
He led me up the wonderful staircase up to my room. It was HUGE. The bed was king sized with white lace sheets. The curtains were white lace as well. On the night table aside the bed sat a powder blue lamp and a telephone. Across the room was a large bookcase filled with books. It was like heaven. The room was amazing.
“I’m glad you find the room to your liking. I will let you settle in before you meet the master. You have fifteen minutes. When you‘re done, come down to the living room.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
I was worried.
Would Mr. and Mrs. Carter like me. Would I mess up in front of everyone and get punished.
I spent the rest of the fifteen minutes thinking about what could go wrong. Not a good start.
I walked don the grand staircase into the living room. It was quite large and very e
