If you are driving from Greensboro you could always stop in Raleigh or Durham on your way to the beach. There are tons of state museums that are great and are located in Raleigh. I would also check out the north Carolina aquariums that are located on the coast. They are lots of fun for rainy days. Downtown Wilmington is also really nice. I would suggest taking a carriage ride downtown, visiting the battleship, or visiting the historic houses in the downtown area. Also, remember that other beaches are really close so you can always take a short day trip to see what other beaches have to offer such as the fort near Kure beach.
