How is getting around Fort Bragg with no car?
Question:
Just looking some advice & experience from a soldier who's been stationed at Fort Bragg & didn't have a car. I've hear it's huuuge. How huge? Possible to get around without a car? Any & as much info as you would share would be awesome thank you!!!!!!!!

Answer:
It's big but it's not like all the things you need are spread out all over the place. Just get a ride with somebody until you can get your own car. Or just get a decent mountain bike for now. Small px's are scattered about and well within walking distance, and the main px and commissary are right across the street from eachother. You can get your sewing done down there also. The bank is also there but you'll get direct deposit and have a debit card I'm sure, that you can use at your local px. The main thing is, hook up with some friends and get off post when you can, to what NC has to offer. Don't become a barracks rat just because you don't have a car.

Can I renew my Ga Plate Tag if I am stationed in Fort Bragg NC? ?
Question:
I am a soldier in Fort Bragg and need to renew my tag..can renew it in Fort Bragg if I bought my car in Ga? If so how? & Does anyone know how much it will cost?

Answer:
There appears to be NO accommodation for doing a registration renewal on line. This I can not understand. Most all States I've Seen and delt with have that option on there Web Sites. SorryMaybe you can use the web site and at least get numbers and locations to talk to someone. http://www.dds.ga.gov/

what is the policy on fort bragg for pov inspections?
Question:
We have pov inspections in the army before a 3 day or 4 day weekend. They make us call our insurance company then our nco talks to them to verify that we have valid insurance. I was told that it was a violation of our privacy because we have to authorize the insurance company to give them the information. But if we refuse to do it they tell us that we cannot drive the vehicle or ride in it and they take our car keys. I wanted to know if they could legally do this.

Answer:
Driving a POV on military installation is a privilege granted by the installation commander. You are obligated to show proof of valid insurance; normally consisting of a card showing the dates your policy is effective and expires. If the NCO discusses only the information that appears on your insurance card I don't see a violation of your privacy.

Info on Fort Bragg NC?
Question:
My husband is in the army currently in AIT at Fort Gordon GA. He just got his orders and we are going to Fort Bragg NC and i had a couple questions... 1st this is our 1st time doing this so any info on what to expect or things i can prepare for to make the move easier would be awesome. 2nd we were going to stay off post but I have been reading alot of stuff that says its a horrible area and that on base would be better, in your opinion is it better on or off post, if your say off what areas are the safest and if you say on then what neighborhoods are the best. The last question is about our car... I have been told that you need a pass on your car to get on base?? and that you need to have your registration and insurance info. Well the problem with that is that the car is registered in my moms name and im on the insurance but its her insurance so is this going to cause a problem and what should i do to fix it? i know this is alot of questions but im becoming super stressed over it! Im hoping someone can give me some info or at least give me a number for someone i can call to figure all this out! thanks in advance for any information you can provide!

Answer:
You are getting a lot of good answers so I will try to keep this short and simply state my opinion. First things first: entering the military REQUIRES organization. You have to get all of your papers and documents in order and keep them together as best as possible. I am on Fort Bragg and I prefer to be on base rather than off base. There is a hightened level of security on base because of a few reasons, you either have an ID or you dont get on. Some gates dont check the vehicles anymore, it might even be all of them that dont check anymore, its either ID or get off post. Second base housing is basically a bunch of houses close together so if something looks fishy, more than likely your neighbor is going to say something or bring it to your attention. Third finances depend on you and if you can afford to have BAH taken or not but I have a toddler and one on the way, in my opinion its easier for them to take back the BAH than to have to juggler a million more bills and no matter what, your utilities will never be shut off and you always have your home for shelter. Thats very important to me. Some of the houses on base are very nice, some are a bit older, I live in an older one. The quality of the newer houses is very nice and from what I have seen, you'd be paying more to live in the same quality of house off base. It depends how you play your cards. There are many social gatherings and freebies on base and you are the first to know everything. You might get tired of looking like the neighbor next to you, but off base whats the difference? You are more alone and being alone too, too often is not healthy, especially for the military. They take care of your lawn, your housing needs, there are nice neighborhood centers with pools gyms movie rooms and community rooms and there is support everywhere. I would rather them take back our bah than live off base without this stuff anyday. A friend of mine lives off base and they liked having the extra money but they are becoming less and less safe where they are and are now moving on base, and very excited about it. Things can still go wrong just like anywhere, but soldiers dont play around. You might feel like just a number when you are constantly asked your sponsor's last four of his social at the local clinic, but I still prefer to live here. There are places around here that do need to be avoided because they are not as safe. I recently stayed at a Value Place hotel and every single night, no exaggeration, every night there were cops flying down the streets, ambulances and firetrucks. Sounded like the city was burning down! There are places that need to be expected and avoided like something known as the Korean Square. Its nothing but strip joints, and as you can imagine there are barber shops, tatoo shops, and strip joints located in many places. Away from those places the area is really nice. Beautiful trees right now that pour flower petals all over the place. Anyway now that I rambled on I hope you got some help! SO much for being short :) If you need anything email me and I can give you more help through email or another website. By the way. On post housing was very simple. My husband was not yet with me so all I needed was my POA (you will soon have one) his deployment orders, and my ID. Thats it. I had that and they showed me which houses I qualified for, I got a special so I was allowed to have a 3 bedroom house which I now truly need and it took about 2 weeks to get the keys to our house. There are waiting lists so you will need to contact them as soon as possible. They will help you out sooo much!

Stuck between 2 houses in Fort Bragg, NC?
Question:
Ok me and my husband are about to get our first home in Fort Bragg. He's deployed right now so I have to do all the paperwork & stuff but I'm in TX so everything is via phone, email/internet. We are stuck between 2 houses that I picked out. One is my favorite but the other has a garage so I showed him that one as well. (I know he wants a garage so I want him to have it of course) The one I favor has a neighborhood center. (Pool, hang outs, room for FRG meetings, stuff for kids to do, place to take dog) The one I favor has a fenced in patio. (Place to store the grill, have parties/ private tanning, and puppy can be in bathroom emergencies if I'm dealing w/baby & can't take it outside for a walk) The one I favor is newer and has nice floor plan. http://www.braggpicerne.com//upload/documents/floorplans/s te_wl38.pdf http://tour.circlepix.com/tour.htm?id=452408&refur l=braggpicerne.com The one he favors has a garage. (The project car and tools/ grill/ army gear can be stored) The one he favors has a nice floor plan. The one he favors has non fenced in patio. (gives more yard room than fenced in would) http://www.braggpicerne.com//upload/documents/floorplans/ pope_wood_wl78.pdf http://tour.circlepix.com/tour.htm?id=59081 1&refurl=braggpicerne.com There are obviously more pros about the first house than the second, but its a big deal that the second has a garage. If the first house had a garage or at least a car port- there would be no comparison. I have never lived in NC before. Only stayed for 2 weeks so I dont know much about anything. The first house is actually on base and the second is on Pope air force base. I really dont know how far that is from where he works though. Is there anything I'm not taking into account? Keep in mind that I really love the first house, but like the garage for hubby and his Eclipse. We have 3 vehicles total. Help?

Answer:
Living on Pope and driving to Ft. Bragg will be a real thrash because of the traffic and check points. Not worth all the extra time. It is only about 10 miles away from Bragg. You will also have to learn to live with the constant roar of jets overhead and on the ground. Bragg has lots of big pine trees for shade they have been replacing windows, floor coverings etc. All homes are painted the same and you cannot change colors. The rules are strict. Grandson and wife lived there for years. The humidity there will do you in at first. Not to mention the heat and deluge of rain storms. The average rain fall there is about 48". You will be living in what they refer to as the sand hills. It is very flat and only about 25' above sea level. Enjoy your new spot. You will need aromatic cedar chips for closets because of moths. Leather has a tendency to mildew. EDIT--There are all sizes of really nice storage units prior to entering Pope, on the same road and very cheap. Perhaps you could content him with one of these.

Which is better? Being stationed in Italy with the 173rd or the 82nd in Fort Bragg?
Question:
I got the opportunity to pick where I want my first duty station to be because i know a few people at HRC and right now im stuck on between fort bragg with the 82nd or italy with the 173rd, i have always seen the 82nd as the most "elite" airborne unit but living in italy is living in italy, but i heard it gets expensive because of car insurance and just the cost of living is higher. By the way im a 11x, with airborne contract single and 18 years old, if anybody has been stationed at one or both bases any feedback would be appreatiated

Answer:
Every Airborne Infantryman at Fort Bragg dreams of serving in Italy. That is your answer! I've served at Bragg and loved it. I have visited Italy and wish I had been stationed there as well. Living in Garmisch, Germany was the next best thing. If you have a choice, take the overseas assignment. You can always rotate back from there to Fort Bragg to round out your Airborne life! Good luck!
