What are the white marks on the axles of new york city subway cars (why are they there) ?
Question:
On New York City subway cars, there is a white mark on each end of each axle. The shape of the marks is as if one divided the diameter of the axle into thirds, drew the perpendicular to the diameter at one of the third marks, then painted from the perpendicular to the near edge of the circle - a sort of "smile" shape. I am wondering why the marks are there - are they to easily show that the train is moving ? Or do they have to do with balancing the wheels ? Something else ?

Answer:
I like that other answer BUT it doesn't apply to why the white lines are used on NYC Subway car wheels. You are generally correct in your statement: "are they to easily show that the train is moving ?" There have been occasions (rare ones) where not all the brakes release completely, as a result the axle would not be moving as freely as the others (or not moving at all) and could result in damage to the entire truck assembly or even a derailment. There also could be a situation where the wheel becomes loose on the axle and spins around by itself. This could be spotted when the train is not moving (but the wheel still is). In either case, should one of these situations be spotted while the train is in operation, it is taken out of service right away.

Why are new urban city cars like the Micra and C1?
Question:
not being offered with a diesel engine. Are modern small diesels not as efficient as small petrol engines?

Answer:
Why spend another £1-2000 on a cheap city car (which is what Diesels tend to cost over their petrol equivalents) that takes fuel which is about 60p a litre more expensive and has more expensive servicing requirements when the petrol car does 50mpg anyway? There comes a point in the equation at which fuel consumption doesn't really matter, and a low mileage city car is that point.

The number of new cars purchased in a city can be modeled by the equation?continue reading on?
Question:
The number of the new cars purchased in a city can be modeled by the equation C = 16t^2 + 158t + 3851, where C is the number of the new cars and t = 0 corresponds to the number of new cars purchased in 1957. In what year will the number of new cars reach 20,000? provide steps plz..

Answer:
20000 = 16t^2 + 158t + 3851 t ≈ 27.21 1957 + 27 = 1984

how does the automated station announcement work on the new cars of the new york city subway system?
Question:
announcments are made at certain points before the train comes into the station automatically how does it do that?

Answer:
the trains, classes R142, R142A, R143, R160A, R160B and the upcoming R179, have built in odometer programs that track the number of wheel rotations as the train moves. Since a train wheel rarely slips the number of rotations needed to travel a given distance is relatively stable. Before the cars were first used, the MTA calculated the number of turns and used that to program the trains to give the stop announcement. all other announcements are manually triggered from the cab.

Why do New York City police cars blip their sirens a lot at night?
Question:
I've noticed on my visits to New York City that during late at night when there isn't much traffic on the streets, the police cars will sort of 'blip' their sirens only when going through intersections. So I would be laying in my bed and hear a lot of "bwoop.............bwoop............ ....bwoop." Is this just some sort of rule the NYPD have to follow to combat against contributing to late night noise pollution?

Answer:
When law enforcement is running lights and siren or code, we are required to run both when moving. I would assume that they have adopted a manner of just using it when approaching intersections to warn pedestrians or cross traffic that they are entering the intersection and to beware. It's really a them being nice and not runnning full sirens. Most states laws require the siren to be on, but many of us will only use it in intersections and when overtaking cars during night to be nice and let people sleep!

Did New York City still have street cars in 1932?
Question:
I'm writing a book, and would like to know if New York City still had street cars. It is very important, because transportation is everything in my story. I would also really appreciate it if you could tell me the fees. Five stars for anyone who can cover everything!

Answer:
Yes they were still very popular during that time and cost between a dime and a quarter. This led to the popularization of jitneys too though a Jitney was practically a trolley but smaller and more of a taxi cab approach, they would run right before the trolley and take you where you wanted to go along the trolley tracks for an even cheaper price (a nickel, jitney was the a slang term for nickel in this time.) also called nickel cars and early trolleys

Which paper has the best classifieds for used cars in New York City?
Question:
What papers have the best listings. I want listings that are NOT free for the seller to post the ad like craigslist, as I do not trust them. Is there a paper that has more listings than others here? Which should I buy? Or do they have good online sites? *Also, which day of the week is best to buy for the auto classifieds? Is Sunday any better than any other day?

Answer:
I live in NYC, and I find that most people buy all the newspapers when shopping for a car. So I don't think it makes much difference. And I agree with you (about craigslist). But that's just me. :-) Good luck..
