Fun Inexpensive or Free things to do with kids in New Jersey?
Question:
We are taking a trip to new jersey and will need to fill our days with fun and interesting activities for the kids, ages 13 and 7. I am on a tight budget, so very inexpensive or better yet FREE ideas are appreciated. I have access to a car, but don't want to have to pay a lot of tolls! We are going to be in the Perth Amboy/Elizabeth area. But, again, am willing to drive to see some cool and interesting things that will interest our kids.

Answer:
That area is very industrial, and just gross. When people visit New York City, many drive through NJ, or land in Newark Liberty (right next to Elizabeth) and all they see is industrial filth, and which is why it gives NJ a bad name. Plus Newark isn't a very safe area. There aren't many sights to see around there but in Jersey City is the Liberty Science Museum, a great place for people of all ages, a ferry to the Statue of Liberty, or a ferry to Ellis Island, a visit to NYC (expensive). If you drive Northwest, you will find many rural farmlands and hills and such. If you go just south, into Monmouth county, you could perhaps visit Freehold, where a famous Revolutionary Battle took place (Battle at Monmouth.) Plus, there is Allaire State Park, in Wall or Homdel I believe. This is another historical sight. It was an old colonial/industrial town which centered around the production of weapons. Or you could visit the Twin Lighthouses in the Atlantic Highlands, Sandy Hook and the Gateway Recreational Area, or just drive down the shore. If you are willing to go on a long car ride upwards of 90-120 minutes, you could always go to the Pine Barrens, a very rural area in southern NJ and home of the world's largest natural spring. The Pine Barrens stretch from the Barrier Islands all the way westward to almost the Deleware River. It is really pretty this time of year, and quiet at the beach. (Seaside Heights, famous for MTV's "The Jersey Shore") Smithville is a famous attraction (false town with themed shops and scenery and such) as well as Bastone Village, similar to Allaire, but larger. Atlantic City and Wildwood are not far away from there either, and if you want to stretch a 2-3 hour car ride, go to Cape May, NJ. It is home to the county's largest source of Victorian Architecture.

On New Year's Eve, does Queen Elizabeth...?
Question:
put on a lamp shade and get drunk down at Piccadilly Square? In America we scream out of car windows as we drive drunk on public streets, or we hang out house windows and bang on pots and pans with wooden spoons. What sayest THOU???

Answer:
Not at all dear boy. Her Majesty stays at home to watch Jools Holland's Hootenanny on her televisual contraption. Tell me dear boy, whereabouts can one find Piccadilly Square? Is it in Las Vegas, perchance?

Visiting New York City for a week.?
Question:
Here are some questions I have. Any help is greatly appreciated! To save money, I booked a in Elizabeth, New Jersey right by the Newark Airport. What is the easiest way to commute from the hotel to NYC? Is getting a rental car a smart idea or should I just stick with public transportation? I'm going on this trip alone, I'm a 25 year old guy, what are some things that you think I would enjoy doing while in the city. About how much money do you think I'll need for a week of stay, counting food and tourist stuff i.e. Statue of Libert, Empire State Building etc. What clubs/bars do you recommend? Do you have any other useful info that you think I'll need? Thanks again! I'm a New York City newbie so any help is appreciated!

Answer:
The easiest way to commute is to take the train to Newark Penn Station then either get on the Northeast Corridor Line or the Path train into the city. Getting a rental car is a bad idea if you're going to spend most of your time in NYC unless you don't mind navigating the streets and dealing with the traffic on weekend nights (AND ITS BAAAAD) How much money will you spend? Ahh it all depends on what food you eat. There are cheap options. And it all depends on what you're interested in. When I lived in NYC I hung out more in the East Village (CBGB's when it was open, St. Mark's Place, etc.. never paying more than $10-15 for a meal). You want to check out Gray's Papaya on the corner of 8th St and Avenue of the Americas - about $2.75 for 2 hot dogs and a drink. Best dogs in the city. Veselka Diner on 9th Street and I think 2nd Avenue is an amazing 24 hour diner with the best chicken noodle soup and pierogies ever... Bars? Oh so many. If you want to meet some stand-up comics while getting your drink on (and possibly bump into some famous ones like Chris Rock or Robin Williams) hop over to The Olive Tree Cafe above the Comedy Cellar on MacDougal street between Bleecker and Third.... Not only is their mediterranean food menu outstanding, but the drinks are awesome (GET A NUTTY MONK!) On the ooooother side, back over towards the east.. on 14th between B &C there's this awesome Tiki bar called Otto's Shrunken Head.. they get all kinds of bands playing there, punk, reggae, etc... but they make the best drinks I've ever had... There are too many good bars.. You might have to e-mail me haha. DON'T EVER FOLLOW A CITY GUIDE FOR YOUR BAR TIPS!!!!! They are never ever right! You need to ask a real human being who has been to the bars... I've been smashed many a night in new york when I lived in Manhattan and when I lived in Brooklyn. Best years of my life! Tourist site prices can be found on http://www.nycvisit.com Total money spent... it all depends on how you want to save your dough on your trip. You can avoid spending extra money on cab rides by taking the subway and becoming friendly with a subway map - also you can walk. Walking in NYC isn't like walking anywhere else.. because there's always something around you so it doesn't feel like you're walking in the desert or something. Walking can be fun and totally free! If you think... you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner - spending $15 at the most.. that's $45 a day... times 7 - That's $315 on food. If you want to do the subway, you can buy yourself an Unlimited Ride 7-day metrocard for $24 (which automatically saves you money after you've gone on 12 subway rides...) Drinks? Well I don't know how much you drink, so you can calculate that... but NYC can either be expensive or cheap... strong or weak (although I wouldn't send anyone to a place that makes weak drinks)

Inexpensive Motel or Hotel for a weekend in beginning or middle of December, 2010 in New York City.?
Question:
My girlfriend and I would like to travel to NYC for the weekend. I was raised there and currently we are out of state. I have visited myself in the summer and stayed at the 12 Towns YMCA by myself, on previous occasions as well. This summer I paid 45 dollars apparently they want 80 dollars a night now for one person only, the Green point YMCA they said it was 80 also, but for the two of us. There is no breakfast available and the showers are shared but I know from experience the Green point Y seems to be one of the cheapest, and safest, in terms of neighborhood. I looked at Motels on roomsaver.com and they listed something in Elizabeth New Jersey I think the Knight Motel 45 a night I think, but when I called, they said 64, but apparently that is rampant with prostitution according to the reviews. SO, does anyone know of anything really inexpensive around the time frames I listed in the title, in NYC, not Staten Island, btw, perhaps in Westchester or Rockland I guess...maybe New Jersey but I would really prefer New York City. Also I read something about a Rockaway Beach motel something like 115 dollars a week. But any input would be helpful. Something inexpensive and quiet and safe so iIcan park my car. Maybe with complimentary breakfast that would be nice. Thanks.

Answer:
Go to TripAdvisor. You can click on "New York Hotels" and filter by price or area. You can post your question on their Forum section. Check out any hotle/motel/hostel you're considering on the bedbug registry. NYC has a massive infestation of bedbugs affecting hotels/motels/hostels/apartments/offices/theaters/stores.

Safest place to stay in New Jersey that is close to NY?
Question:
I'm heading for NY by car and heard that it would be better to just leave my car in NJ then take train or ferry to NY. Question is where should I stay in NJ? I was thinking about staying in Elizabeth town but I heard that it was unsafe for travelers. I need help! I'll be heading to the Queens in NY. Thank you!

Answer:
I stay in Newark whenever I go to New York it is cheaper and safe close to the airport. I would recommend the Newark Airport Marriott. Rates are cheap on the weekends. I walk around the grounds at 1-5 in the morning all the time. The hotel has plenty of parking and so does the airport. All the major airport hotels have shuttles to the airport at monorail stop P-4. If the Marriott is too expensive like Mon.-Thurs try the Holiday Inn Newark Airport. Holiday Inn is sometimes much cheaper and comparable in quality. If you can just stay at the Marriott.

Question:
I want to visit the new jersey area around Dec 16-20 and I have a few questions....first are there any good hotels other than the ones by the airport but are still close to the Elizabeth area? How far is Elizabeth, nj, from new York city/times square? How to get there?

help with title and plot of my new love story?
Question:
part of this story i started writing when i was 16. let's go back to june of 1994: kim and barry newman are your typical suburban couple, kim is a housewife and barry is a roustabout in a warehouse. they have a 7 year old son named marshall. the only thing wrong with this almost perfect picture is that they have a troublesome neighbor (scotty) on one side. he has harassed kim and even beat marhsall, he is your typical @$$|-|0|_e. on this day marshall is playing in his back yard when he sees that there are new neighbors moving in to other house, which had been for sale. out step a single mother maggie late 30's, and her daughter elizabeth, 7 (marshall's age) kim and maggie meet and socialize together, while they unpack, then later they watch the soap operas, while marshall and elizabeth go play in the back yard HELP WITH PLOT (they need to something that would be innocent, like kissing each other, or similar that would get scotty angry at them) elizabeth talks back to scotty dismissingly and he comes charging at them. they run from him and actually out run him, because he is very heavyset. they run into the new house and lock the door behind them they then go hide under the desk in the computer room and fall asleep together. maggie is coming to her house and scotty flees the scene being the coward he is. maggie then finds marshall and elizabeth snuggling together and takes a picture of them with her polaroid camera. she let's them sleep until barry comes home and picks his son up. barry looks at them and says "that's my boy" he gently wakes him up and says "dont hurt us scotty" or something similar. then he realizes it is his dad, and half sleeping he says "ohh i must have had a bad dream." they go home and eat dinner. i need marhsall and elizabeth to grow closer almost like a childhood version of boyfriend and girlfriend. i also need a reason for elizabeth and her mother to have to move far away. now fast foward 10 years to june of 2004. maggie and elizabeth are back in town, (just visiting) and marshall gets very excited. marhsall and elizabeth are now teenagers with raging hormones. maggie and elizabeth sleep over at barry and kim's, in the middle of the night marshall cannot sleep, so he gets up and realizes that elizabeth cannot sleep. they were already madly attracted to each other, when they met again that day and they tart talking (help with dialog) and though it would be a long distance relationship, they decide to become a couple. the next day they are again in the back yard, and being two affectionate teens they are feeling a little frisky. scotty sees them together again and the situation turns violent he beats both of them (help with a good reason for him to be provoked) marhsall takes the keys to his mother's car, him and elizabeth get in and they drive off. scotty follows them in his truck and runs them off the road. the car starts leaking gasoline and bursts into flames. marhsall and elizabeth die together. i know some parts sound crazy, but i wrote crazy stuff like that when i was 16, so any help in fine tuning this piece of work, would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Answer:
just in my opinion i might say: maybe if scotty is a religious nut, has mental issues and self-harms or something (needs more depth of character) who gets angry when he sees the children kissing or doing anything he doesnt think is sacred or whatever and his anger just boils over until he finds himself being violent. also might be more romantic if elizabeth is badly injured (although not so much as to need to go to the hospital) so they decide to run away together and get a fresh start away from their violent neighbour. maybe scotty completely loses it and cuts their brakes while they pack or just decides to follow them and ram them off the road. something between the parents may ad more depth too (an affair, an illness, divorce or something) might be cute if elizabeth was pregnant, then again might be too full-on to kill-off a pregnant character =\ anyway, just some random ideas, good luck. it has very good potential :)
