Is the Chatham area of New Jersey a rich part?
Question:
Was looking at places in nj to rent that have solid public transit. Is Chatham Township, and places like Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, etc a rich part or affordable? And can you get around without a car?

Answer:
Rich and affordable is all relative. I would call Chatham upper middle class, along with Summit. Think family income of $200K to $250K I would call Far Hills, Tewksbury, and Alpine rich. Think income of $1M + New Providence and Berkeley Heights are middle class to upper middle class. Think income of $100K to $200K You are going to need a car for all those places.

Answer:
Chatham sounds like a nice place to live. In 2005, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Chatham 9th on its annual list of the 100 best places to live in the US. It covers less than 2.5 sq. miles ande is cnsidered a pedestrian friendly community. RR station within about one mile from its farthest boundary. If you're not familiar with NJ, be aware that they're having major budget cutbacks and that NJ property taxes are the highest in the US. That's one reason why we now live in PA, right across the Delaware River (in New Hope PA--if you know NJ, then you know where New Hope PA is).

Answer:
the areas you mentioned have a wealthy population and are *not* affordable unless you are pretty well-fixed. and it would be very hard to get around without a car there.
