Facts
On Christmas morning, a large moose came into the backyard of Ms. Terry Hangerty of 519 East Spruce Street in Missoula, Montana.
The Moose pushed open the door of the back porch & began chewing on Ms. Hangerty's pile of dirty laundry destroying approximately 11 pair of underwear, 4 T-shirts, 2 towels & a pair of corduroy jeans.
Ms. Hangerty discovered the moose while she was filling stockings for Christmas morning & immediately locked the door between the porch & the main house. She called 911.
Firefighters from the #1 Station on Pine Street responded to the call. They tried to shoo the moose out of the laundry room without success. The moose kicked at one firefighter who tried to approach it carrying a portable fire extinguisher. The firefighter was treated for a bruised arm at St Patrick's hospital.
Animal Control experts were then called in. Before they could arrive, the moose exited the laundry room & disappeared up Orange Street. The Police are requesting information about the moose's whereabouts from Missoula citizens.
The moose population of West Montana has been increasing during the past 5 years.
A harsh winter has been forcing the moose out of their usual homes in search of food.
Moose can be very dangerous & unpredictable.
Moose are the largest members of the deer family.
Scientists believe that Missoula & many other cities in moose country are being built in prime moose habitat.
Encounters between moose & people have risen 500% in the past decade.
Interview with Ms. Hangerty
“I had just finished filling the stockings of my sons Cleo & Nigel when it happened. Cleo likes those chocolate Santas you can get a ShopKo & Nigel has been collecting Matchbox cars. Anyway, it must have been about 6 AM. I know, because the weather had just come on T.V. & it was still dark out. Usually I go out for a walk at this time of morning. You know, I've got to work off a few of these Christmas pounds. But today, you know, I just decided to stick around until the boys got up.”
“That's when I heard a noise. At first I thought it was coming from the kitchen. But when I went in there, I didn't see nothing, so I opened the porch door. Lord, I about had a heart attach. This big dark shape was just standing there. When I opened the door, I thought it was a Grizzly Bear. You know, those darned environmental extremists want them to live everywhere & I'm sorry I didn't keep a shotgun after the divorce. Then, I realized it was a moose. It must have, you know, been a girl moose because it didn't have horns.”
“Needless to say, I slammed the door & called 911. I'd forgotten to turn the water off for coffee in all the excitement. I hope I didn't ruin my coffee pot, because all the water had boiled away. I turned it off. Then, I woke the boys up to look at the moose. I guess this is the closest thing to reindeer they are ever going to see!”
