University of Missouri - Columbia?
Question:
What is the campus like? How are the dorms? Is it diverse? What fun stuff is there to do in Columbia? Is there only one mall there? Would I need a car there? I'm planning on living on campus for the first year. Is it easy to find a good apartment? How much would rent be.. What's the most nationality in Missouri/Columbia besides Americans?

Answer:
Very interesting questions - what is more interesting none of the questions you raise have anything to do with selecting a University. Serious students select a University that is academically sound in the degree program you wish to pursue. You go to the University for education and that is the priority. The number of malls, the nationality of the town (which is highly likely to be markedly different than the nationality of the University), recreation opportunities, and virtually everything else you ask has little to nothing to do with pursuit of a higher education degree. Serious students are industrious and busy in pursuit of their education goals. Successful students are serious students. Virtually all campuses have a large amount of foot traffic and stores that support foot traffic. Many major Universities prohibit automobiles for first year students for numerous reasons. UMC permits freshmen to have automobiles. If you plan to go to party - don't go at all. Let serious students fill in your space. If you want to be a serious student, then don't concern yourself about the questions you raise as they are not related to a degree program. My fear is that you are not a serious student - and you will academically crash by the end of your freshman year. Only you can avert this by becoming a serious student and concentrate on the relevant and avoid the irrelevant items. I say this as a graduate with a BS in Chemistry, MS in Chemical Engineering, and an MBA. My first degree program was completed in 1970, second in 1973, and last in 1983. I attended 3 major midwestern universities. As a graduate student I taught the freshman Chemistry students - and within 5 minutes of listening to the student chat about his / her interests I could tell you who would pass and who would not. Perhaps you do not know this but 2/3 of the students who start Freshman Chemistry either drop out of it or fail it - and of the 2/3 who do not make it, all were not serious students.

I'm 19 years old. Is there any big name car rental company that would let me rent a car?
Question:
I live in mid-missouri (columbia). I need a car for a weekend. I was wondering if any of the big name auto rental companies would let me rent a car for 2 days if I'm 19 years old.

Answer:
Nope, I believe the age requirement is 25 for most rental companies if I remember correctly. You would have to find a small company if you want any shot at renting a car. All of the big name companies use age restrictions to help control insurance costs.

My 1995 Ford escort is having some problems...Whats wrong?
Question:
I have a 1995 Ford Escort and had problems about three months ago with the battery. If i left my car off for too long, it wouldn't start. I got the battery replaced, and the car had no problem starting. It did however have problems with going up hills faster then about 35 mph and it would stall out if I stopped quickly. So, I just stopped slowly and went slow up hills. I'm a college student and left my car near Columbia, Missouri over my Christmas break (for about a month and a half), so it got pretty cold. No one drove it and it stayed in a parking lot the whole time. Now that I'm back, it won't start again. The engine isn't even turning over. I just replaced the battery. What could it be?

Answer:
If you replaced the battery AFTER the month and a half sit and it still will not start, I would check the battery cables for corrosion. It is a common problem on this model for the corrosion to eat away at the battery cables INSIDE of the rubber insulation. The terminals themselves might be clean, but if you strip away from insulation from the battery cables as they lead away from the battery, they will be full of green corrosion, ask me how I know? I used to own a 95 Escort that would cut off while driving and not restart till it cooled off, because of the corrosion in the battery cables that you could not see because it was inside of the cable insulation, the corrosion had eaten away at the cables inside for a good 6 inches from the battery, but outside the cables looked great. If the newest battery you refer to was BEFORE the month and a half sit, the battery is probably dead from sitting in the cold for that long and keeping the radio presets and module memory active for that long and may just require a recharge.

Missouri’s “Castle Doctrine” Law Under Scrutiny?
Question:
Im 12 years Old and I think this is a great law. Missouri’s “castle doctrine” law, passed last year, continues to draw controversy and debate even as property owners use it to defend themselves and what they own. The castle doctrine law allows Missourians to use deadly force when necessary to defend themselves from attackers. Advocates praise the measure as a means for innocent people to defend themselves against criminals. But critics of the law fear it could result in the unnecessary deaths of petty thieves and that hardened criminals could hide behind the act as a legal way of killing others. Officials question just how far people can go when someone enters their home and they are looking to court cases to help sort out the interpretations. Judges and attorneys familiar with the law say that Missouri’s version appears to allow killings like one that happened in Texas last November where a man saw two burglars carrying items from his neighbor’s house, then grabbed a shotgun and killed the burglars. The Missouri statute appears to legalize the killing of anyone who unlawfully enters a house or a car, or who commits a forcible felony like robbery, burglary, arson, kidnapping, assault or rape. But a committee working on jury instructions for the law is taking a somewhat more narrow approach. Jackson County Judge Charles Atwell, who chairs the committee, said the previous Missouri law had a “reasonableness” standard in it and feels that, since the new law uses the term “reasonable,” juries should take the standard into account. The “reasonableness” standard from the old law meant that a person had to believe they or another individual was in serious danger before deadly force could be used. Those jury instructions could prove pivotal, according to prosecutors in the state. They are due to be completed in the next month or so and are then subject to acceptance by the Missouri Supreme Court. Last week, a pizza deliveryman in Pagedale, a St. Louis suburb, was robbed at gunpoint when he brought a pizza to Rodney Reese and Brian Smith after they had called in the order. The pizza deliveryman, fearing for his life, fired his own gun, killing Smith. Reese was able to get away with the pizzas and the deliveryman’s wallet but was apprehended later. Reese is being held on $250,000 bond on armed criminal action, robbery and second-degree murder charges. The same day, Henry Brown was shot and killed when he tried breaking into an apartment in Columbia. Officials there said that the shooter, Alvin Canton, clearly acted in self-defense and is protected under the castle doctrine law.

Answer:
Check out the Wikipedia article on Castle Doctrine. I don't know how the Missouri law actually reads, but, generally, the castle doctrine laws allow the home owner to consider an intruder in their home a deadly threat and allows the use of deadly force. The law protects the home owner against both criminal and civil charges. The fellow in Texas does not really fall under the protection of the Castle Doctrine because it was not his property nor was it his home that was invaded. He might get off simply because Texans don't much like criminals anyway. The pizza delivery incident does not fall under the castle doctrine at all. This was simply a case of self defense against two armed robbers. The Henry Brown incident is the only one you quote that actually would fall under the Castle Doctrine.

Can I get into these colleges with a 3.3 GPA?
Question:
These are the colleges i am interested in: Auburn U Bellarmine U Carson-Newman C Clemson U Elon U Florida SU Georgia Tech Georgia Southern U Iowa SU Kansas SU Kennesaw SU Mississippi SU North Car SU Oklahoma SU Penn State U Park Roanoke C Seton Hall U Texas A&M U U Alabama U Arkansas U Iowa U Kansas U Kentucky U Louisville U Maryland Coll Park U Mississippi U Missouri Columbia U Nebraska Lincoln U Oklahoma U Oregon U South Car U Tenn Chattanooga U Tenn Knoxville U Wis Madison Western Carolina U

Answer:
3.3 is a good GPA, but they will weight it with your standardized (SAT/ACT) test scores to determine your enrollment. If your test scores are much higher than average, you should not have any problems getting into any of the schools on your list. If you have lower than average scores, you should still be able to get into some of them. Keep in mind it also depends on what your major is; some schools have very discerning qualifications for some of their programs, but others are easier to get into.

So Atheists: Does this long list of epic fails by your VP show your nemesis Sarah Palin to be genius Epic Win?
Question:
-- On July 16, 2009, Biden gave a blunt summation of the administration's approach to stimulus spending. "People, when I say that, look at me and say, 'What are you talking about, Joe? You're telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?" he said at a stop in Virginia. "The answer is yes." -- On July 5, 2009, in an interview with ABC's "This Week," Biden conceded that the White House team "misread how bad the economy was." His confession came as unemployment hit 9.5 percent, despite the administration's insistence that it would hold to 8 percent with the stimulus plan. -- On April 30, 2009, Biden gave advice on dealing with swine flu that seemed to contradict President Obama's warning not to panic. Speaking on NBC's "Today," Biden, a longtime Amtrak rider who has commuted for decades daily from Delaware to Washington, D.C., said he wouldn't advise family necessarily against going to Mexico, the source of the H1N1 outbreak, but he wouldn't tell them to get into any small area like a subway car, automobile, classroom or airplane. "I would tell members of my family, and I have, I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places right now," Biden said. "It's not that its going to Mexico, it's that you are in a confined aircraft when one person sneezes, it goes everywhere through the aircraft. That's me." -- On March 13, 2009, Biden addressed a former Senate colleague by saying, "An hour late, oh give me a f----ing break," after he arrived on Amtrak at Union Station in Washington, D.C. The vice president's expletive was caught on a live microphone. -- During a Feb. 25, 2009, interview on CBS' "Early Show," Biden encouraged viewers to visit a government-run Web site that tracks stimulus spending. When asked for the site's web address, Biden could not remember the site's "number." "You know, I'm embarrassed. Do you know the Web site number?" he asked an aide standing out of view. "I should have it in front of me and I don't. I'm actually embarrassed." -- At a Jan. 30, 2009, swearing-in ceremony of senior White House staff, Biden mocked Chief Justice John Roberts for his presidential oath blunder on Inauguration Day. "Am I doing this again?" Biden said, after Obama asked him to administer the oath. When Biden was told the swearing-in was for senior staff -- and not cabinet members -- the vice president quipped, "My memory is not as good as Justice Roberts," prompting a stern nudge from Obama. -- On Inauguration Day, Jan. 20 2009, Biden misspoke when he told a cheering crowd of supporters, "Jill and I had the great honor of standing on that stage, looking across at one of the great justices, Justice Stewart." Justice John Paul Stevens -- not Stewart -- swore Biden in as vice president. -- When criticizing former GOP nominee John McCain in Athens, Ohio, on Oct. 15, 2008, Biden said, "Look, John's last-minute economic plan does nothing to tackle the number-one job facing the middle class, and it happens to be, as Barack says, a three-letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S, jobs." -- In a Sept. 22, 2008, CBS interview, Biden misspoke when he said Franklin D. Roosevelt was president when the stock market crashed in 1929. "When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened," he said. Herbert Hoover -- not Roosevelt -- was president in 1929, and television had not yet been invented in 1929. -- During a Sept. 12, 2008, speech in Columbia, Mo., Biden called for Missouri State Sen. Chuck Graham, who is wheelchair-bound, to "stand up." "Oh, God love ya," Biden said, after realizing his mistake. "What am I talking about?" -- At a Sept. 10, 2008, town hall meeting in Nashua, N.H., Biden said, "Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. Quite frankly, it might have been a better pick than me." -- Biden mistakenly referred to Alaska governor Sarah Palin as the "lieutenant governor" of her state during a town hall meeting on Sept. 4, 2008 at George Mason University in Manassas, Va. "I heard a very, by the way I mean this sincerely, a very strong and a very good political speech from a lieutenant governor of Alaska who I think is going to be very formidable, very formidable not only in the campaign but in the debate," Biden said. -- Biden said he was running for president -- not vice president -- during a Sept. 1, 2008, roundtable discussion in Scranton, Pa. "Today is the moment for me as a United States senator running for president - During his first campaign rally with Obama as his vice presidential running mate on Aug. 23, 2008, Biden introduced Obama by saying, "A man I'm proud to call my friend. A man who will be the next President of the United States -- Barack America!" -- On Jan. 31, 2007 -- the day Biden announced his presidential bid -- the Delaware Senator was roundly criticized for calling Obama "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

Answer:
No, but I refer to an American "hero". How can we fail to appreciate George Bush when his record speaks for itself? EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE LAW ENFORCEMENT I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving while intoxicated. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver's license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been "lost" and is not available. MILITARY I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam. COLLEGE I graduated from Yale University with a low-C average. I was a cheerleader. PAST WORK EXPERIENCE I ran for U.S. Congress and lost. I began my career in the oil business in Midland, Texas, in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn't find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt right after I sold my stock. I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money. With the help of my father and our friends in the oil industry, including Enron CEO Ken Lay, I was elected governor of Texas. ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America. I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money. I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history. With help from my Governor-of-Florida-brother, and my father's appointments to the Supreme Court I became President after losing by over 500,000 votes. ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT I'm the first U.S. President in history to enter office with a criminal record. I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over a billion dollars per week. I spent a U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury. I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history. I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period. I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period. I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market. In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues every month. I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My "poorest millionaire," Condoleeza Rice, had a Chevron oil tanker named after her. I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President. I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations. My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud (Enron) in U.S. History. My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision. I've protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or prosecution. More time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip-offs in U.S. history. I presided over the biggest energy crisis in history, refusing intervention when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed. I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history. I changed U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts. I appointed more convicted criminals to administration than any President in U.S. history. I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States government. I've broken more international treaties than any U.S. President. I am the first President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law. I refused to allow inspectors access to U.S. "prisoner of war" detainees and thereby refused to abide by the Geneva Convention. I'm the first President in history to refuse U.N. election inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. election). I set the record for fewest numbers of press conferences of any President since the advent of television. I set an all-time record for most vacation days in any one-year period. After taking off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure in my nation's history. I garnered unprecedented sympathy for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks, and less than a year later made the U.S the most hated country in the world, possibly the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.

can anyone tell me what they think of any of these colleges/universities?

Answer:
Four colleges on your list caught my eyes because I know quite a bit about them. 1. Columbia College is a very prestigious lvy League school that is especially good for aspiring writers and journalists. New York City also offers good college life. 2. The University of Chicago is a good research school. However, many people don't like it because it places too much emphasis on graduate students instead of undergraduate students. 3. Northwestern University has a beautiful campus in Evanston north of Chicago, and it arguably offers a better undergraduate experience than the University of Chicago. 4. Vanderbilt University is a great school that has a top-notch medical school. People who want to go pre-med go there. Any of these schools would be great for college. Best of luck to you!
