Read my story about a bear attack? Question: can someone read my story?
Today was the last day of 7th grade for a week. We have the entire next week of school off because of Thanksgiving. I was planning to lay around my house for the next 9 days, until my Dad suggested we go on a camping trip. We’d rent a log cabin two and a half hours from our house and stay there for a week, sit by the fireplace, and go hiking in the woods. I actually thought it sounded kind of fun, but my mom was reluctant.
“Why would we stay in a log cabin in the middle of November?” she demanded. But Dad assured her that it would be fun, so she agreed to come with.
We found a cabin online that we’d rent for a week. It was a 45 minute drive from the ranger station, which was a two and a half hour drive from our house. We’re leaving early tomorrow morning, so Dad put me to bed at 9. I didn’t fall asleep for a while, though because I was listening to my parents talk in their room.
“I just think it’s a bad idea to take Julie out into the middle of nowhere.”
“Betsy, quit worrying. Vacations are supposed to be fun! Besides, what’s the worst that could happen?”
The next morning, I woke up to the smell of eggs and bacon at 6 AM. Dad had already packed the suitcases, made breakfast, and filled the car with all of his camping gear. Now he was sitting at the table with a fork in one hand, a newspaper in the other, and a mouth full of bacon. When he saw me, he swallowed.
“Hey, kiddo! Grab a plate!” he greeted me.
“Okay. It smells great.” I grabbed a plate out of the cabinet and piled some bacon and a piece of toast on it, and sat down next to him at the table.
“Excited for the trip?” he asked enthusiastically.
“Yeah!” Actually, I kind of was excited. I hadn’t been camping in a long time
“Good. We’re leaving in 15 minutes,” he told me, and then walked off. 15 minutes later, we all piled into Dad’s red pickup truck. We passed the “Thanks for visiting Bemidji, Minnesota” sign, and we were officially on vacation.
After two and a half hours of driving past a lot of trees, we arrived at the ranger station of Voyageurs National Park. We were greeted by the park rangers, two guys in green suits and explorer hats. Mom and Dad went into the station. The park rangers gave them a map and detailed instructions on how to get to our cabin, and told them about hiking trails near our cabin.
“We’re here!” Dad exclaimed. We all dragged the suitcases into the cabin.
It definitely wasn’t the nicest place, but hopefully we would still have fun on vacation.
Mom had already made dinner, spaghetti and meatballs. Dad and I grabbed plates and we all ate dinner in an awkward silence. After I excused myself, I watched TV for a while. When I realized how late it was, I flipped the TV off and ran my room. I crawled into the bed and closed my eyes, and after laying there for a long time, I fell asleep.
When I woke up, my parents were both still in their room. I checked the time on the digital clock. 7:19. I headed to the kitchen to make myself some Ramen Noodles. As I was eating, my parents walked in, fully clothed with their coats and boots.
“We’re going hiking!” Dad said. “So get dressed, and don’t forget your coat.”
I quickly washed the bowl in the sink. Then I went to my room and put on my clothes for hiking. After I was dressed, I met up with Mom and Dad in the front room. “Ready?”
“Yeah, let’s go,” I answered. We were going to walk on a trail that made a loop, which would be a total of 2 miles. By 8 AM, we were on the trail. It was really pretty. The leaves were all off the trees and on the ground, and they crunched every time I took a step. It was chilly outside, but really warm for November. And I could hear water running, probably a creek or waterfall somewhere nearby.
After walking for 15 minutes, Dad spotted it. 50 feet ahead of us, there was a black bear, tearing at a deer carcass. Dad immediately pulled a can of pepper spray out of his bag. We all started walking backwards, and the bear continued to eat the dead animal. I was relieved that the bear hadn’t spotted us, because if it had, we would have all probably ended up like that deer.
We continued to back up at a steady pace, and we were probably 100 feet away the bear. That was when I felt my foot step on a loose branch behind me. I fell backwards, and not meaning to, I let out a little scream. That was when the bear looked me straight in the eye, and began charging towards us. Mom quickly pulled me up and we both ran to a tree, which we squatted behind in terror.
The bear was running as fast as a horse towards Dad. He stood his ground and tried spraying its face with the pepper spray. The bear stopped running. It was probably only 10 feet away from Dad. When it stood on its hind legs, it was 8 feet tall. Dad aimed for its face one final time, and the spray went right into its eyes. It shook its head and ran into the trees.
