Is Pontiac, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, dangerous?

As you may know, Detroit has a history of high crime rates and violence. I'm a Canadian currently based in London, ON, and I wanted to drive into Michigan for a concert, specifically the town (or county, I'm not sure) of Pontiac. Is it safe to park your car in most places here? Is it safe to walk anywhere after dark? If someone familiar with the area could get back to me, I'd be much obliged.

I work in Downtown Pontiac, right by the bars. You will be fine. It has some trouble, obviously. But anyplace that a bunch of drunk people is going to have that. I have worked there for 3 1/2 years and never had a problem. If you plan on staying the night, check out Auburn Hills for a hotel (the closest and nice area). Downtown has on the street parking, and parking lots, and two parking ramps. I am assuming that the concert is either at Clutch or Crofoot. Clutch is pretty big and was built in an old church. Crofoot is newer and has become a music hotspot.

People with nice cars drive 10-15 miles below the speed limit. Why? are you trying to make someone hit you so you can buy your next fancy car? I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire and Had it since it was new. It's still in great condition and I drive the speed limit. But I swear rich people that have BMW''s, Mercedes, SABB's , and other Snooty cars, drive slower than a Grandma. I think they do it so someone can hit them and they can sue. Has anyone else noticed this? if you want to sightsee, go to the slow lane. Should you drive a Bmw 15 MPH, in the fast lane when the speed limit is 45 and there is 60 car lengths between you and the car in front of you? Why do Rich Peopl do this? If I can drive my little "poor People's car" the speed limit than, I know your brand new Mercedes can move faster. Or are you trying to purposely get a lawsuit by hoping someone will hit you. Is this how the rich scam and stay rich? BTW don't say I dog my car, it's in great conditon for it's age. 13 yrs. old 166,000 miles and I drive it like it's new.

Most of the newer cars that are wrecked are sold off by the insurance agencies to scrappers for the parts sales. You could contact all your local insurance agencies and see if a bargain can be struck. Once sold to scrap yards as a salvage, it is hard to re-title car.

If the engine runs, just check the oil and water at every fill up. The car could probably bust a hose or break a belt. Know how to change those. If the car steers ok, why worry about the shocks? Make sure the tires look good. No plugs used to fix the flats. Reward the car with shocks if it's still cranking after the trip. I've driven a lot worse.

Service Vehicle Soon light in a 200 Pontiac Grand Am GT?

I was driving my car for not long earlier today, and the "Service Vehicle Soon" light came on. I didn't think much of it, as I am pretty sure it is different than the check engine light in my 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT (v-6 ram air.) Just to be safe though, I went to the gas station, filled my tank up nearly all the way (not even a gallon short of full) and put in some fuel injector cleaner. Afterwards, the light went away. I live in Michigan too, and it was just below freezing today, and I had a little more than a quarter tank of gas before I filled up when I first started it. Could it have been an oxygen sensor issue, like with the check engine light? Or is this probably some sort of coincidence?

alfredb1979 is full of crap. The Service Vehicle Soon light is different from the Service Engine Light on your Grand Am. It comes on to indicate burned out lights and other non-emissions/engine control related problems. A very common one is when the ABS system is having problems, but unless the ABS light also came on, you do not have this problem. Check your lights, but if it stays off, don't worry about it.
