Questions Related to east, lansing cars

Provided By Y! Answers

can you live in east lansing without a car?
Question:
i am applying to graduate school programs and all of the programs i am looking at are in the midwest except that i don't drive. i am look at east lansing (michigan state), ohio u, indiana u at bloomington, u kansas in lawrence and a few others.. are any of those places doable without a car?

Answer:
You don't need a car at IU Bloomington if you live on campus or in an apartment near campus or a bus line. You can walk, bike or take a bus (free to students) just about anywhere you need to go. All students pay a mandatory transportation fee that covers the cost of campus or city bus transportation. You can take a shuttle (not free) to the Indianapolis airport when you want to go home. The university discourages freshmen by having cars on campus by assigning them parking spots near the athletic facilities and requiring that the cars be moved elsewhere when there is a home football or basketball game.

Why do some places have more police presence than others?
Question:
In my little podunk town in Mid-Michigan, population 250,000 or so, there are plenty of cop cars roaming the streets. The population is dwindling, yet you still see the cop cars out and about, looking for speeders, you name it. When I went to college in Ann Arbor, I noticed the police presence was considerably less. You'd see a cop riding around on a bike on campus now and then, and it was rare to see a cop car driving around town. The police were never intimidating. Now in East Lansing, home to MSU, the police were almost paramilitary, riding two to a car, looking for troublemakers... Why do some towns have more of a police presence than others? Is it a liberal/conservative thing? Ann Arbor is liberal, yet it had crime that would warrant a cop presence. I've been to a couple other countries too, and it seems to me that America has more of a police presence than any other country. Does anyone know why?

Answer:
It's budget and need really. Ann Arbor PD is a great department and there are prob more officers there than you realize. It's actually a sizable force but it also has more ground to cover than your small town. LOL MSU.....again a great department and sizable but , I think, with a different approach to policing. Department approach has an affect as well. Some departments are more community policing driven, some aren't. Departments will design their approach around the needs of the community they serve. Lansing is a town with different crime issues than Ann Arbor and, as such, the approach changes. Don't count out Ann Arbor though...I have seen their department at full show when the UofM street riots broke out after a victory by the football team a few years ago. They had presence...had it by the truckload.

Easy to get into Cars Assembled in America?
Question:
My dad has arthritis and wants a car he can get in and out of, but he he also wants a car assembled in America. He's not opposed to foreign brands, he just wants it assembled here. Currently he has a Honda Element, the seat is the right height and the doors are large and open very wide. He's getting tired of it and wants something new. I'm thinking he probably wants to stay with something about mid-sized and SUV-ish or a crossover. I was thinking: Saturn Outlook – Lansing, MI Chevrolet Traverse – Spring Hill, TN Chevrolet TrailBlazer – Moraine, OH & Oklahoma City, OK GMC Acadia – Lansing, MI GMC Envoy – Moraine, OH & Oklahoma City, OK Buick Enclave – Lansing, MI Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matix – Fremont, CA Saturn Vue – Spring Hill, TN Toyota Highlander – Princeton, IN Ford Taurus X – Chicago, IL Honda CR-V – East Liberty, OH (+ many other places) Cadillac SRX – Lansing, MI Mercury Mountaineer - Louisville, KY & St. Louis MO Honda Pilot - Lincoln, AL Subaru Tribeca - Lafayette, IN A more complete list of vehicles assembled in the USA would be awesome, but I couldn't find one. Short of that, other suggestion would be great. Yeah I get that there is more than one way to define 'made in America,' but he wants a car assembled in America, he just does.

Answer:
The reason I bought a 2008 Dodge Nitro was it is 85 percent American made, the highest I could find. It is easy to get in and out of, another reason I liked it. The GM Acadias have a chinese engine, I think :(

Deleted Answer: 1 - The 1993 Stanley Cup Riot occurred in Montreal after the Montreal Canadiens won their 24th Stanley Cup. Fans poured out of the Montreal Forum and began to commit acts of vandalism and violence while their team was celebrating inside. In the epicenter of the riots, Ste. Catherine St., stores were looted and police cruisers were set ablaze. The riots caused $2.5 million dollars in damage. At the high point of the riot 980 officers were dispatched and they made 115 arrests. The police reported 47 police cars damaged, 8 of those 47 cars were completely destroyed. Of the rioters, 168 were arrested after they broke windows, looted stores and set fires. Some of the rioters were suspected of planning to loot stores using the riot as a decoy. 2 - The 1994 Stanley Cup Riot (or sometimes called the Robson Riot) occurred in Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on the evening of June 14, 1994 and continued into the following morning. The riot arose after Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals in which the Vancouver Canucks lost to the New York Rangers. 3 - The Michigan State University student riot is an event that took place on and around the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan on the night of March 27, 1999. Following a loss by MSU's basketball team to Duke University in the NCAA Final Four, approximately 5,000 (10,000 by early newspaper reports) students and non-students gathered throughout the outside of campus. Ethics aside, can I drop in on/sneak into college classes?
Question:
Weird question, I know. Especially considering that I'm a senior in high school and shouldn't be concerned about anything except for smoking weed and getting drunk. Yeah. Right. Anyway, I live about 20 minutes from Michigan State University, and I'm over in East Lansing almost every day. MSU has the eighth largest student body out of all colleges in America, enrolling something like 40 or 50 thousand students in the fall and spring semesters. It's also considered to be one of the "Public Ivy" schools. One of my friends kept telling me how funny their psychology class is, because there's about 20 or 30 really ghetto black people in it who ask the most redundant and inane questions. She was originally planning to just bring her laptop to class one day and set up her webcam so that I could sit around at home and listen in on the entire class, laughing my way through two hours of academic idiocy. Yesterday I was in the car with her when she was on her way to psychology, and she remarked that if I were at home, I could have watched class that day since she had her laptop with her. I asked if there was any other way that I could observe, and she suggested that I could sit in the back of the class and just take notes. For obvious reasons, I was a bit apprehensive at first, but I eventually walked into the class about 15 minutes after it started, sat down in the very back row, took out a notebook, and did my best to blend it. It was a relatively small class, with there being somewhere between 30 and 50 students enrolled. I'm not sure, but I think the professor gave me kind of a weird look when I walked in, but didn't say anything and kept moving through her PowerPoint. The class was quite funny (I remember one guy asked something like, "So I know dis question ain't related, but like, does ex-cess-ive drug use lower intelligence 'n shit like that?"), but I also enjoyed myself quite a lot and took about 12 pages worth of notes. It being college and all, I pulled out a lot more information from this 2-hour course than I did from a typical month of my high school psychology class. I dunno, I liked the atmosphere a lot, and I'd like to go back. I was tempted to ask questions and argue with some of the other students who were making stupid psychological propositions and theories, but I decided to keep my mouth shut. My friend said the professor is lax enough that if I kept going back, she probably wouldn't mind even if I asked a few questions. So in this case, it's quite clear to me that it's fine if I "sneak" into, or drop in on this particular class. My question now is - would it be okay for me to do this in other classes? I know that if I went into a lecture course or one with a large class size, I likely wouldn't be noticed at all. But could I do the same thing with smaller classes like this one, and not have anybody make a big fuss about it? If I e-mailed a different psychology or sociology professor and asked if I could drop in, do you think they'd let me? This is a state university, so it's not as if I'm trespassing for being on campus or in the buildings, but I'm not sure about everything else. As said in the title, ETHICS ASIDE. I'm not going to try to get into a class that's so jam-packed with students that I'm going to be taking up valuable space or whatever. If I ask any questions, I can guarantee you that they're going to be a lot more intelligent and well-thought out than the garbage I was hearing yesterday. Just Not That, I wanted to sit in on more classes because I enjoyed the one that I did go to. I like learning, just not in the format that it's presented in in high school.

Answer:
I would definitely recommend that you be up front with the instructor if you're thinking about unofficially "auditing" - the actual college-y word for what you want to do - classes that are even the size of your friend's psychology class, let alone smaller ones. If you want to participate actively, I would talk to the instructor first regardless of class size. I worked with university faculty for over 20 years and I can tell that there is, if anything, even more variation in personality and attitude and behavior among them than in the non-teaching public. 9 out of 10 would have no problem with what you're suggesting; you just don't want to cross that 10th one's path...

Should I propose to my boyfriend?
Question:
Should I propose to Jake? My boyfriend Jake and I have been dating for almost seven years now, we started dating back in high school my sophomore year and his junior year. Now he's a senior in college and I'm a sophomore (I took a year off due to my having ovarian cancer) Basically, we've been through everything imaginable as a couple and we're still together even after all of this somehow. He's done so much for me and I want to sort of return the favor in a big way. Jake is very close with his cousin Jessica and about 6 months ago she was in a really really bad car accident, since then shes been in a coma for 5 months and just woke up about 3 weeks ago. He really wants to fly down there to see his family and jessica (They live in Miami and we live in East Lansing) But he just hasn't had the money to do it. So since the accident, I've basically saved every paycheck I've received and I have over 4,500 dollars. I've already bought the plane tickets and basically planned this whole trip out for him gone ahead and did everything I could think off for the entire week and 6 days we are spending there. Should I propose to him?

Answer:
Go for it (:

Where can I get a good truck for real cheap?
Question:
I dont have much money and Im only 16, i know i shouldn't think about it since i do have a car thats only 10 years old, but i need a truck. I want to know where i can find a good running truck -prefer a S-10 model- for under $2500. I am willing to trade my car or whatever for it also. If you could give me a website to look for trucks, or if you would just send me some pictures, both would be great. I live in central Michigan, about 45 minutes north of Lansing. 10 Minutes east of Carson City. 1 hour south of Mt. Pleasant. or 20 minutes south of Alma. I really dont know how far from any thing east.

Answer:
There are a lot of places you could be looking to find this truck -- consignment lots, public auctions, classified ads, eBay, police auctions, etc. Here's more about it: http://www.used-car-advisor.com/cheap-used-cars.htm .
