What grants/loans/assistance am I eligible for as a disabled student with a TBI (at Grand Valley State)?
Question:
I am a student at Grand Valley State University as of this Fall in Allendale, Michigan. Currently, I am looking into student loans to help with my financial situation (which sucks because the insurance company hasn't been paying for anything, yet), but I was told by my case worker to contact the University to ask about any programs available for students with disabilities. I contacted Career Services, Human Resources, Student Employment, and Disability Support Services, and didn't get much information out of anyone in the past few hours. It's clear that I can get some special accommodations for tests and classwork and notes and what-have-you, as my memory and attention is still what suffers, but nobody seemed to know of any other grants, loans, scholarships, or other programs for disabled students. The situation is, I would've attended this school over a year ago, had I not suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury due to a friend getting me in a car accident last summer (I'd also have been better able to afford it, but that's another story). I was accepted and enrolled in several crashes, then - long story short - I bonked my head. Hard. I was told not to attend school for the semesters following, but I did anyway, though I could not attend full time - either way, attending part-time or not at all, it set me back at least a year in getting my degree, not to mention a lot of money out-of-pocket (for medical expenses) and out-of-earnings (I was told by my doctors to work 1 day a week since I was taking classes), basically rendering me broke, and getting broker. Now, I've been awarded some small grants and am considering accepting my student loan, however, I would like to know if there are any national/federal/whatever programs for students who have disabilities or TBIs, like myself. Can anybody point me to some information in this regard? It would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.

Answer:
As a grad of GVSU and GVSC and having been disabled when I got the second degree there - I don't think so. Michigan doesn't have any special grant programs and Grand Valley didn't either (that could have changed, but disability services would have known about it.) You should be contacting Michigan Rehabilitation Services and see if they would help. There is also Michigan BIA (Brain Injury Alliance) based in Brighton that could give you a clue. Ask to speak to Cheryl Burda 800-772-4323.
