Can I be pulled over and arrested solely for driving while suspended?
Question:
Last week I was pulled over in Burlington Massachusetts. The cop told me that I had been pulled over for driving while suspended. There was no other reason/charge for pulling me over. I was told that my license in Massachusetts had been suspended for an unpaid speeding ticket in New Hampshire. I told him I had paid the ticket & there must've have been some mistake. Nonetheless I was arrested, my license was taken and destroyed & the car was towed. I got all my paperwork stating the ticket had been paid & my record was completely clear in New Hampshire. At court yesterday I presented this to the DA & he told me to go to the RMV & get my license reinstated & the charge would be dismissed. However, this has already cost me close to $500 (towing, license reinstatement, bail & one full days work lost) & I am wondering if this was possibly a wrongful arrest. Just to clarify a bit, this is exactly what happened w/New Hampshire. I got a speeding ticket & the fine was due Monday Nov 3rd. I mailed the check the week before... My statement told me the check was cashed on that date (11/3). A few weeks later I recieved a notice from NH stating I need to pay $100 to reinstate my license. I called to ask about this (twice) & was told that since the check was recieved/cashed on the due date it was technically late & would have had to been received/cashed before 12am 11/3. So it actually need to be there the previous Friday(October 31st) even though due date on the ticket said 11/3. Nonetheless I reluctantly paid the $100 by phone & was assured my NH record was clear though it may take 24 hours to register out-of-state. That was December 3rd.. I never recieved any notice from the Mass RMV (I've had an issue with not recieving mail from them before only to be told they had mailed out the notice & the address they have on file is correct).

Answer:
If, indeed, there is any liability it would be on the part of New Hampshire, not Massachusetts. Unortunately, you must obtain permission from the 'king' before you can sue the 'king'. New Hampshire is unlikely to give you permission to sue the state. It was not a wrongful arrest on the part of Massachusetts. Retired peace officer.

Should I live in Boston or the 'burbs?
Question:
Alright, so I have a job in a Massachusetts suburb, about an hour outside of Boston. And I can't decide if I want to live in a city area like Brookline, Brighton, or Cambridge or an Outside suburb, Lexington, Newton, Burlington, etc. Pro's and con list: City: Pros: It's in the middle of everything! I can make friends, have stuff to do, etc It's near a college and great architecture which I love! I'm not much of a club-goer or anything, but it's nice to have social options Cons: 'it's expensive: My budget is 2k, and I can't find anything over 500 sq feet in these areas! The commute: I've been commuting all my adult life, I don't want to drive an hour to get to work, even if it is a reverse commute (for what it's worth I'd only be doing it 3x a week, but I'm a shitty, shitty driver) Parking might be an issue (I can't NOT take my car, I have to get to work!) suburbs: pros: - It's cheaper, or at least I get more house for the money - I LOVE those comforts like in-unit laundry that I probably couldn't find in the city - It's a way shorter commute to work, like 20-30 minutes vs 40 or 50 minutes - Parking and owning a car is way easier (so is insurance) Cons: - They're in the middle of nowhere, and there's nothing to do past 9pm. I could drive into the city, but is that really likely something I'll do? - It's not Boston.... :-( - I'm a single young twenty something with no friends in the area. Do I really want to commit that kind of social suicide by moving to the suburbs?

Answer:
Move to Boston. You are only young once. You would trade all the fun of Boston for laundry???Give up your car and find public transportation to work. Driving is bad on any given day, but wait till the winter and no place to park when all those No Parking/Plowing Streets signs come out. Think of the towing fees. The suburbs are boring. Find a room mate and split costs, figure out your commute. You will so regret being out of it in the suburbs!
