Question:
Chapter 1 Liam Prescott woke up with a start. He sat up straight in his seat and pushed his dark brown locks out of his eyes. The last inches of sunlight streamed through the car window and displayed his shadow across the dashboard. “You’re up kiddo.” Mason Chandler stated to his godson from the drivers seat without taking his eyes off of the darkening road in front of them. With his muscular frame and blonde hair, he didn’t look a thing like Liam, but was the closest thing to a father that he had in his life. Liam stretched his arms above his head and jammed his Yankees cap back on his head. “How long ‘til we get there?” he asked, facing his godfather. “There” was Chandler Hall, Mason’s childhood home in Abington, Massachusetts. Liam thought back to that summer, when Mason had given him the news that they were moving back to Massachusetts, Liam’s hometown, and the city where his parents had died in a house fire. Liam didn’t remember his parents or anything about them or the fire; He was only a baby when it happened. Liam shuddered. It wasn’t something he liked thinking about. Mason checked his watch. “We should be there in about five more minutes,” he said, grinning cheekily. “You’re gonna love Chandler Hall,” he promised. “Your dad loved it. When we were kids, we would spend our day getting lost in corridors. Good times, good times.” He winked at Liam. “Is it always this dark here?” Liam asked. Even though the sun was setting, it seemed darker than Liam was used to at night. Growing up in New York City, he was used to everything being bright and loud, even at midnight. Here, the only thing you heard was crows. “This is what I love about this place,” Mason sighed, leaning back in his seat. “The peace and quiet. Well, most of the time.” The way he said it made it seem as if he knew some secret that no one else knew. Gradually, the tress started disappearing, and residential areas were popping up. Liam pressed his nose to the window pane, trying to suck everything in. It wasn’t much, but it intrigued him all the same. Mason eyes flickered over to Liam. “You know, your parents would be really proud of you, Liam,” he stated softly. “Parents died when you were a baby. Moving to a new city. That’s a lot for a kid to deal with.” There were times like this, when Mason mentioned his parents, that Liam wish he’d been old enough to remember them. All he knew was what he’d been told and from old pictures. He knew that he looked like his dad, Carter Prescott, but had his mom, Ella Prescott, clear green eyes. Mason took a left turn, and pulled up to a wrought iron gate. He climbed out to unlatch it, and drove the Range Rover through. He pulled up a cobblestoned driveway in front of tall, stately, brick house. It reminded Liam of a mansion from the 1800’s. Mason unbuckled his seatbelt and climbed out, Liam right on his heels. “This,” Mason grinned, spreading his chiseled arms wide, “is Chandler Hall.” Liam looked around interestedly. The house was obviously really old, but still in good shape. Plants were growing all up the side of it, and in the distance, Liam could see an old courtyard. The front double doors were wide open, and the movers who had come ahead of them were moving boxes into the house. A blonde man with pale white skin looked up and waved them over. “C’mon, I want to introduce you to someone,” Mason said. They walked over to the man, who’d set down his box on the pavement. “Liam,” Mason said, clasping him on the shoulder, “I want you to meet Orion Hamilton. He’s an old friend of mines.” Orion grinned, and took Liam’s hand in his own. It was ice cold. Liam felt warmth wash over him, like Orion was an old friend that he hadn’t seen in a while. “You look just like your father did when he was younger,” Orion said. Liam blinked. “You knew my dad?” he asked. Orion chuckled. “Knew him? That’s an understatement. We were best friends back in our glory days.” Mason cleared his throat loudly. “Uh Liam, why don’t you take this in for me?” He handed Liam the box that Orion had set down and steered him towards the front door. “I’ll talk to you later. Go pick out a room you like.” Mason winked at him Liam smiled back and walked inside of the house, leaving the men talking outside. The smell of old wood greeted him as walked through the front corridor. The floor creaked under his sneakers when he walked up the spiraling stairway. He loved the place already. All of the room doors in the hallway were wide open, and most of them were bare. Liam walked into one of the bigger one and set the box down on the floor. He walked over to the balcony and stood to watch the last spots of orange disappear. Suddenly, a black crow flew over the horizon and landed on a tree directly across from Liam. Its tiny head twitched in Liam’s direction and it held its gaze. For some weird reason, Liam felt unnerved, like it was watching him or something. Not only that, there was something different about it, and something flashed in Liam’s mind, like a distinct memory. The crow cawed and spread its raven wings wide. Then it flew off and vanished into the horizon with the last of the day.
