what do you know abt Ft. Meade (Maryland...) particularly the Severn area?
Question:
Hi the military is DH to Fort Meade, MD. what do you know about 'Severn??'? ...we're soon to move to Maryland where my hubby is in the Military. he is stationed at Meade, we were hoping to live off base, and we want a good area close to base. what do you know about Severn, Maryland...as far as it being clean, crime rates, neighborhoods etc. I am moving from Oregon, so I am also curious as to what the winters are really like...Will i have to buy a new car (truck???) or will my nissan altima be suffice??? idk A thing about Maryland so your help is very much appreciated! :)

Answer:
Severn is okay. better than Odenton. Glen Burnie is nice. I live in Pasadena.. about 30 minutes from base and it's very nice. Colmubia is ..less okay than Severn. when we first moved here the first night in our new apartment by the Columbia mall a robbery/murder took place across the street and six months later ANOTHER murder ( the guy who pulled off the first one BTW) took place across the PARKING lot of my building. last year we had one significant snowfall and one ice storm. Otherwise, its pretty mild.

Answer:
I haven't lived in Severn so I can't talk much about the living situation out there. I used to live in the Baltimore suburbs, near Catonsville and Ellicott City (you can look them up on a map) and there were people there who worked at Ft. Meade. Winters are very mild in the Washington/Baltimore area, but as a result they aren't equipped for snow removal. When they do occasionally get an inch or two, plows may come along late if at all, and do nothing more than mash the snow down and turn it into ice. Ice and freezing rain are more common than snow in winter. So I would say, be prepared to drive on slippery roads that haven't been cleared, and to drive around people who are thrown into a complete panic by an inch of snow.

Question about winters in Maryland. We're New here!!?
Question:
Hi, my family and I are new to Maryland (Severn) and we're from California. This is going to be our First winter here, and I just want to have an idea of what to expect. (Like, snow, ice...how much) I can't seem to find information about it online... We were told that it is Illegal in MD to use tire chains And studded tires...so if this is the case, it must not get that bad right? I don't like snow, so I am starting to get nervous... Plus I drive a front wheel drive 4 door car...I am hoping it's enough! Any good information is helpful, thank you. Thank you for the reassurance guys.

Answer:
I have never used chains or studded tires in my entire life. A front wheel drive car is all you really need for most travel, even in some snow. The only disadvantage is that that standard cars have low ground clearance, so when you try to travelin the deeper stuff (or slide into a now drift) you get stuck (bascially the frame of the car is lifted slightly and the wheels can not reach the ground and merely spin). I personally carry an army surplus folding shovel in the truck of my car for such cases. Just make darn sure that you test your engine coolant to make sure that it has enough coolant to go through the drops in temperatures. I have seen it get as cold as - 10 F for a week at a time. That is an extreme case, but still possible. Most snow starts to come in early January and lasts through mid-March. Some years it can start as early as mid-November and last as late as mid-April.

Should I go to court for Red-light ticket - Lanham, Maryland?
Question:
Hello! I received a red light violation ticket. Honestly, it was not my mistake that I had to skip the red light. I skipped the red light because a Hyundai cut me off when i was changing lanes and I didn't realize I skipped the red light until i was in the middle of the intersection. I didn't stop then because i didn't want to obstruct the traffic coming in from my right. Here are the following details of the event. Let me know if you think i should go to court or just pay the penalty. 1. I was in the middle lane of the road near the signal before the ford dealership (after taking right on lanham-severn road while taking exit to 495). 2. I was intending to go to left lane to be on the lane to take 495S. After going a 500ft, I signaled after checking that I was at least 100 - 400ft ahead from the black car in the left lane. There was green light at the next signal. 3. When I began to move to the left lane, the traffic behind me was slow. By the time I was in the middle of the lane, the black car in the left lane sped up very quickly. Immediately, my instant reaction was to get back to my lane on the right. 4. But immediately I realized I could have intruding the path of some other car. And check to see if I was in right spot or not. 5. Then I moved to left lane, after indicating, of course. 6. By the time I realized I was in the middle of the intersection I could clearly see the red light. I hit the brakes but instantly thought of oncoming traffic from the right and moved up quickly so as to not be an obstruction to the traffic. 7. Immediately I made a mental note of the black car which cut me off. (Black Hyundai Sonata - 3AG0524 - Orisman - Bowie of Hyundai) 8. The image taken by the traffic camera clearly shows the black hyundai ahead of me in my lane. But I don't know if they can see the tags after zooming in. Now, do u think I stand a chance at the court or you think i should just pay the fine?

Answer:
Always challenge it. Red light camera enforcement never considers the one-off conditions like yours. Would a policeman give you a ticket? No. The black car that sped up obviously did so to make it through the light. Beating the light is the outcome of the engineering failure called the dilemma zone. Whether indirectly or directly, you the victim of the a victim of the dilemma zone. BTW, all the red light camera tickets are illegal because of the engineering failure called the dilemma zone. Every DOT builds that failure into the intersection. To read about it, see below.
