How would a traffic-free urban playground, go over in Chicago?
Question:
NYC Experiments With Traffic-Free Urban Playground NEW YORK - In Paris, they call it La Plage, or the beach. And in Bogota, Colombia, it's Ciclovia, or bikeway. For six hours Saturday in New York, it was called Summer Streets: Nearly seven miles of Manhattan that were stripped of traffic, creating a weekend playground for bikers, walkers and loungers. "Bellissimo!" declared Antonio de Lucia, a tourist from Caserta, Italy, who read about the event and decided to walk about three miles from his Chinatown hotel to a friend's Times Square restaurant — with more than 90 pounds of luggage. An hour into his hike, he was smiling as he sauntered up a stretch of Park Avenue awash in cyclists, pedestrians and in-line skaters. One man on a bicycle swooped down a sloped section of the avenue yelling "whee!" at full voice. "It's a moment of truth for this city. People are participating — New Yorkers are united with their city," said de Lucia, a 29-year-old business consultant. Bike-loving celebrities Lance Armstrong and David Byrne are helping Mayor Michael Bloomberg launch the experiment. It emulates similar initiatives in cities around the world in aiming to create a livable, ecologically gentle urban environment. The 6.9-mile, car-free route started at the Brooklyn Bridge and ended to the north at East 72nd Street, with links to Central Park and other open spaces. It included stretches of Park and Lexington avenues and is set to be repeated for the next two Saturdays, starting at 7 a.m. The idea is simple, in the words of the city's official Web site: "Play. Run. Walk. Bike. Breathe." Fitness, dance and yoga classes were offered at a central stage along the route, with additional exercise and health activities hosted by community groups at certain cross streets. Bike rental facilities were available along the route, including learn-to-ride lessons for adults. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080809/ap_on_re_us/summer _streets;_ylt=Alhg9uqWOMQDAD.DzeBFu80DW7oF

Can anyone explain to me New York City parking rules?
Question:
I would like to leave my car in NYC (96th & Lexington or Near By) from Thursday night to Friday morning? Is there a certain side i need to park on? Is there a certain time i need to have my car off the street by? What if I wanted to leave my car from Thursday Night to Friday night? Side? Time I must be moved by?

Answer:
I live semi near there, and from my experience having my car in the neighborhood is really a pest. You might want to consider paying to park it for the few days at a lot, there are tons around that should give you deals on multiple days. If not, then first only park on streets, not avenues. Then never park within I think it's either 15 or 20 feet of a fire hydrant. Also, never block any yellow curbs, or come or block any crosswalks. Then you have to read the signs. NYC has alternate side parking b/c the street sweeper comes by in the morning on alternating sides every day. This means you will have to move your car almost daily and can be a real headache as finding a spot is difficult. What you can do if you still can't find any spots on the street is to just move your car during the time that the street sign says the street sweeper comes. Sometimes I used to have to double park my car for a few hours to let the street sweeper go and then just move my car back. This is not ideal though b/c you can technically get a ticket although they don't enforce it as long as you don't block anyone in. Just make sure you never get towed, it is the worst experience, and very expensive. Also parking tickets for not moving for the street sweeper are expensive so really read those signs. This is why my car is now in Jersey and I originally said you should just park in a lot.

I m writing a letter to Department of finance & parking violations even with the handicap tag & need your help?
Question:
This is the situation guys, and i need a formal letter expressing my disgust and discomfort with this NYPD police. Can anyone help me put this in a better sentence or paragraph for that matter Situation is My friend had a handicap tag. Car was parked in front of lexington and 63rd street. Passenger was extremely sick. I stopped the car in front of McDonalds real quick to grab a bottle of water to comfort the passenger who recently had a surgery. She was feeling very very sick, in fact started bleeding from her nose, and her face was all swollen. So while i i rushed in to McDonalds, there was no line there at all, it was a pick and go thing, while i came outside which was less than even a minute, the policeman approached the handicapped women, who had a brutal surgery and who was bleeding from her nose, and was told by the cop ."If you;re feeling sick, you park on the street, not on the avenue" Which made absolutely no sense, on top of it being obnoxiously rude. I even took pictures around the same time, the ticket was handed. I just went in to grab a bottle of water for not even a minute, because the passenger was feeling very uncomfortable as she had a surgery, thats all. Can anyone help me put up a letter against these crooks in one paragraph expressing my disgust with these guys. Please do not offer advices that , you cannot fight this ticket or all that, i am fighting it, the fine was over $300, and i cannot afford it. No links, or sites please, just need your kind help in one paragraph or two. Thanks a million guys if you can. PLEASE DON;T GIVE ME ADVISES whether i broke the low or not, i will straight out report you, just need help with the letter, not a sarcastic advice for me willing to fight this ticket. Just one good paragraph can help.. Like just need a bit of paraphrasing in this paragraph above, thats all. it will be of a major help.Any smart sarcastic suggestions given, i will straight out report you. The car had a handicap tag on top of all. Sorry, i forgot to mention the most important information. It was an empty street.

Answer:
From: Your name and contact info, including phone number where you can be reached. To: Police Complaint Review Board NYPD Commissioner NYC Mayor Date: Re: Wrongful issuance of a fine of $300 for a parking violation (date of incident) during a post-surgery emergency Dear Sir, I am writing to complain about the notice of a fine (see attached) I received (date) by (name of policeman if you have it) at (time), when I parked my (car make and model) in front of the MacDonald's at Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street in order to assess my passenger, who was suddenly in distress. I had just retrieved passenger from hospital after surgery when she began en route to bleed from her nose. I made sure I was parked safely before assessing passenger and entering the restaurant to obtain a bottle of water for her as he requested. While I was obtaining the water, Officer (name if possible) approached passenger, admonishing her for parking on the avenue. I should add here that the passenger is handicapped and that the identifying handicapped notice was placed under the mirror in full view throughout. Clearly, my passenger was in distress and I made sure I was parked safely before I attended her emergency. In the circumstances, I believe I acted for the best and that this ticket was issued in error. Surely the City of New York did not intend to prosecute a handicapped citizen or the friend attending her in these circumstances. Please advise. Thank you for your kind and prompt attention. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours truly, Enclosure: Copy of both sides of your ticket.

I paid $25O for 3 tickets to Survivor Seies, but now may not be able to get to the event. What do I do? 1O pt!?
Question:
I live in extreme Southern Maryland [Lexington Park to be exact] in a mobile home with my dad and brother. This is about 7O miles from Washington DC, which is where Survivor Series is being held, and I purchased 3 tickets to it thinking [or at least hoping] my dad could drive us in the car. However on Monday the car broke down with transmission problems, and it costs way too much to get it fixed. I was going to just try to sell the tickets, but my brother really still wants to go to the event. We are not able to rent a car because the person driving must have a credit/debit card and be over 25 [my dad doesn't have a credit/debit card and my brother and I are not over 25 or able to drive [don't ask]], but I called a u-haul place, and we may be able to rent a van with them on Sunday, though I would basically have no money left if we did. I let the u-haul place see my debit card and got a paper saying we reserved the van for Sunday, but I am just terrified something will still go wrong that we won't end up being able to get to the u-haul place or rent the van, i.e. it may actually end up costing more money than I have right now. Note that we are all unemployed, my dad, brother and I get less than $1,5OO a month combined from government programs, nearly all of which must go to bills. The rent alone is over $6OO. Questions: 1] does anyone know of any other way we might get all the way to DC on Sunday that is cheaper, easier and/or more reliable than renting the u-haul van? Note that we are in a pretty rural area and you have to get to the main road to get the bus, and it only serves this area and does not even come by this way at all on Sundays. 2]Should I wait until Sunday and see if we will be able to make it to the u-haul place and everything will go all right as far as renting the van, or should I try to sell the tickets now while I have the chance? Because by Sunday it will obviously be too late to sell the tickets, so if anything should go wrong where we can't go then there is nothing I can do and I will have just lost the $25O that I paid for the tickets. Plus I have to pay $15 for us to take a taxi to get to the u-haul place, so I will be out of that money too [the bus only costs $1 per person, but it doesn't come this way on Sundays, and it only goes to a bus stop where we would still need to transfer and pay another $1]. So what should we do? for the record I do still want to go to the event myself, so I would raher try to rent the van, but if something happens where we are not able to rent it then not only I won't have any money from potentially selling the tickets, but I still won't get to go to the event. I just don't know what to do. there is no amtrak or metro in this area.

Answer:
You could try selling the tickets at Auction-USA.Good luck anyways.

I was given a pink summons, 240.20 1, after first being given double parking ticket. ?
Question:
In NYC, on Lexington Ave in front of my building, I had quickly loaded rental car and took baggage trolley about 20 ft back into lobby. Took maybe 6 seconds at most. Guard on door, yelled, "your're getting a ticket. Female officer, "I'm just doing my job". Me, "There was nowhere to park as all the yellow cabs park in the muni meters as they all come here for the Indo Pak cheap food places. I wasn't gone from the car, (jersey plates on the rental) but 6 seconds. Male cop gets out of car and stands there with me and female cop. Me, "This is just another way for the city to get money". Never curse, get violent or anything on my part or theirs. Female cop goes to put tic under windshield wiper, I say, "Don't put it under there, just give it here" thinking I could then walk around the passenger side of my car, they would pull away and I would then have the tick in hand already and get in car and start my long ride to VA where my elderly parents, my mom with a brain tumor live. Female officer doesn't answer my request, having already put tick under wiper, and then says, CAN I GET IN MY CAR? Before I can move, step back or even answer, as we were all standing close together, the male officer says, "DO U HAVE ANY WARRANTS" I was astonished as I am 57 yrs old and never have had anything like that. He then says, "Give me your ID and wait in the car". The whole time, my doorman/guard at the building sees this whole thing and even comes out, standing out in the cold on the sidewalk while they were in their car and I was waiting for "god knows what". They didn't tell me why they had asked if I had a warrant or anything. I told them, at that point, "Look I'm sorry, I just need to get on the road to my 83 year old mother, who has a brain tumor"...true fact, not made up. She had diagnosis at 82 along with breast cancer and had 6 wks radiation. Male officer comes back, doesn't say what the pink tick is for, just hands it thru the window and drives off. Should I hire a lawyer to go with me? it is cheaper to just plead guilty to verbal whatever and pay a fine? (More money for the city from me who is now on disability and trying to deal with aging parents) Any answers appreciated. Many thanks. Oh, and the court apperance date is March 17, 2008, the date that many cops of course will be out having a "good time" on St. Paddy's Day in NYC. The attitude of both of the cops was appalling and in all my 30 years living in NYC I've never been treated by an officer the way I was yesterday.

Answer:

I live in fla. now ... I even got my own parking spot. no more alt. side parking 4 me!!!! yippie.

Whats a good way to pass time at work?
Question:
I just started working at a state park historical site for the battle of lexington. i work tuesday to thursday from 8 am to 4 pm and it goes by extremely slow cause its so boring. i went through a youth corps state park initiative program to work at a state park to get the job, so the place i work doesnt pay me themselves. they dont care when i come in or when i dont, or if i even do anything. i can arrive late and leave early, i dont even have to clock out for lunch. there is no tv or anything there. whats a good way to pass time through the day so i can get through the week faster? i keep thinking about four o clock and going home to take a shower. my boyfriends mom takes me to and from work which is in a different town that i live, everyday. i dont have a car at the moment that will make it to another town. i have to bring my own lunch since i am carless therefore cant leave for lunch. i just want the days to go by faster! I do do my work, and i even go on tours to learn more about it... its just such boring work that it really goes by slow.

Answer:
How about actually doing your work? Perhaps trying to learn more about history would help/ become an expert on the Battle of Lexington so as to be able to help park guests... Ask your supervisors to give you tasks that actually keep you busy AND that are productive... Use this "job" as an opportunity to learn/ gain experience rather than wasting your time playing "word mole" on your blackberry...

Problem with my clutch or transmission... need serious help.?
Question:
Ok I have a 2005 Hyundai Tiburon SE with the 6 spped manual transmission. Now then, I was driving about 210 miles from Hopkinsville, KY to Lexington, KY. About half way I pulled into Wal Mart to go use the restroom. When I slowed down and went into the lower gears I noticed that there was an odd sound. I wish I could describe it but it was very odd. It almost sounded like if u had your brakes slight pushed down and if they were old they'd make that kinda grinding sound. That's kind of close to what it sounded like. When I was done there and started driving again, I noticed that the car was having a hard time going after putting it in gear. Almost as if you tried going and you were letting off the clutch but didn't apply enough gas. It would do that for the first 4 gears, then when I got up to speed back on the interstate, the noise would go away. I finally got to Lexington and the noise was a lot worse. Louder, sounded more rough, and my car had even a harder time trying to get up and go, so I pulled into a parking lot. I was making the turn and I started to let off the clutch and about half way the clutch all by itself just slammed into the. My car knocked really hard and the clutch was stuck to the floor. Eventually I was able to force the clutch off the floor and fully released. I tried to push the clutch down but now it won't move at all. So now I'm stuck in Lexington with a broken car. It's looking really pricey to just get it looked at so I'm in dire need of some help. And to make things worse, I have to be back in Hopkinsville on Monday (15Jan2010) because I'm in the Army and I have to catch a flight the next day to return to Afghanistan. So things are kinda urgent. Much help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You! Oh and also before my clutch took a dump, when I pushed the clutch down there was a little more resistance and it wasn't as smooth. It was very noticeable. When it take a dump there was an odd odor. Didn't smell like anything was burning just an odd smell. And the noise I described earlier completely stopped.

Answer:
Most of it sounds like a clutch problem, especially a "popped spring" (see first source). What worries me more is the engine misbehavior, particularly because the excessive drag may mean that the gearbox may be in trouble. I recommend a check of the lubricant level (even quick-lube shops can do that). If the lube level is low the gears may have already been spalled, but bringing the lube up to the right level - if that is the problem - should get you through the short term.

Should I live in Boston or the 'burbs?
Question:
Alright, so I have a job in a Massachusetts suburb, about an hour outside of Boston. And I can't decide if I want to live in a city area like Brookline, Brighton, or Cambridge or an Outside suburb, Lexington, Newton, Burlington, etc. Pro's and con list: City: Pros: It's in the middle of everything! I can make friends, have stuff to do, etc It's near a college and great architecture which I love! I'm not much of a club-goer or anything, but it's nice to have social options Cons: 'it's expensive: My budget is 2k, and I can't find anything over 500 sq feet in these areas! The commute: I've been commuting all my adult life, I don't want to drive an hour to get to work, even if it is a reverse commute (for what it's worth I'd only be doing it 3x a week, but I'm a shitty, shitty driver) Parking might be an issue (I can't NOT take my car, I have to get to work!) suburbs: pros: - It's cheaper, or at least I get more house for the money - I LOVE those comforts like in-unit laundry that I probably couldn't find in the city - It's a way shorter commute to work, like 20-30 minutes vs 40 or 50 minutes - Parking and owning a car is way easier (so is insurance) Cons: - They're in the middle of nowhere, and there's nothing to do past 9pm. I could drive into the city, but is that really likely something I'll do? - It's not Boston.... :-( - I'm a single young twenty something with no friends in the area. Do I really want to commit that kind of social suicide by moving to the suburbs?

Answer:
Move to Boston. You are only young once. You would trade all the fun of Boston for laundry???Give up your car and find public transportation to work. Driving is bad on any given day, but wait till the winter and no place to park when all those No Parking/Plowing Streets signs come out. Think of the towing fees. The suburbs are boring. Find a room mate and split costs, figure out your commute. You will so regret being out of it in the suburbs!
