Is it worth doing a DITY move from Dallas, TX to Fort Lewis, Washington?
Question:
My husband is reporting there at the end of July so we have a little bit of time to come with a plan. We have a 21 month old, who will be 2 July and I'm wondering if it's worth hassling a DITY. Do you really a decent amount of money off of it? Should I just stick my husband in our car and let him drive while I fly with our child? I'd imagine 3-4 days of driving isn't going to cut it with a toddler. Or if anyone did drive with a toddler, how did you help them cope? Help please!

Answer:
With a little person? No! Hubby and I did a DItY move prekid and that was pain enough. But, after the little ones came.... no way! Packing up boxes, getting everything prepped, loading it into a Uhaul, then the drive, unloading it, and unpacking it.. all with a toddler. Just thinking about it makes me exhausted. If you have the military do it... we're talking 2 days of having movers in your house packing you out. Then quiet time to clean house and make it to WA. Then the military will hold on to it while you find a place to live. Then, one last day of them unloading all the boxes and furniture back into your house, and they'll put it where you want it. Time to unpack and the movers will even come back and pick up all the boxes and packing material. PCSing is hard enough on a family, don't make it any harder.

How can i get from Newark NJ to Washington DC?
Question:
I am from CA but am traveling to NJ to visit my husband at Fort Dix. We would like to go site seeing in DC but i am not sure what the best way would be to get there? I do not want to spend a fortune i am doing that already as it is. Plane, Car, Train, Bus?? Any suggestions?

Answer:
Car, car, car! I live in Northern NJ - right near Newark - and had family just outside DC for many years. I've done this trip a zillion times! For a reasonble car (30mpg) you can get to DC on one tank of gas or less - - that shouldn't cost you more than $40 each way, total $80. Tolls are about $30 round trip. Give yourself some gas money for riding around - another $40. And its not even the price of one Amtrak or Plane ticket. I-95 south is all you need. Try priceline.com for a hotel. If you are decent with directions you can try Arlington or Alexandria for hotels if you need it - - i usually get $50 to $75/night thru priceline in one of those towns and end up at a decent enough hotel. Many hotels offer shuttle service to/from the Metro so you don't even have to drive!!

Moving to Fort Lewis, help?
Question:
My husband is currently finishing his OSUT (one station unit training) for the Army and has been ordered to Fort Lewis, Washington. I would love some information on Fort Lewis for anyone who has any but that's not my real question... He needs to leave for Lewis right after his graduation. Meanwhile, I am on the east coast with an apartment full of stuff and no way to get it across the country. I am selling my car because I don't think it will make in on a cross country trip so that sort of rules that out. Will the Army use the contracted movers to move all our stuff across country or do I need to figure it out on my own? Thanks! Oh, also... how would I get in touch with the movers/what have you if the Army will help?

Answer:
First thing you need to do is take a deep breath and relax :-) JL is right. EVERYTHING will be taken care of. One thing you will find about being in the military is that you are in good hands. Your husband will be allowed time to come home and get you. The Army will have all your stuff packed and moved for you. All the money you need to move across the country will also be provided. The car thing is your only real issue. If you think it going to conk out on the way probably better to get rid of it. Another option you will talk to your husband about is called a DITY move (do it yourself) move. You are given the money to rent a u-haul and drive it across the country. Your husband should know what he needs to do. If not, when he graduates and comes home call the personal property office at Ft. Lewis and they will tell you (and your husband) what you need to know. Ft. Lewis is located just south of Tacoma Washington. Beautiful area with Mt Rainer in the background. You will love it.

What are the chances of this happening...?
Question:
Ok so my boyfriend is going to Washington D.C. He is flying. We live in Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas. He will be flying from DFW airport to Washington D.C. I am really worried something will happen and they will crash or something. I know that planes are very safe, even safer than cars. But the fact hes flying to the nations capital scares me because I'm afraid of a terrorist attack. What are the chances of the plane crashing? Also how long is the plane ride? Will he be okay? By the way I fly all the time.

Answer:
The chances of anything bad happening is almost zero. Commercial flying is about the safest mode of transportation possible. He is flying between two large metro areas covered by the most talented and experienced air traffic control system in the world. Flight time is approx 3 hours. The nations threat level is yellow or "elevated". For flying, it's orange or "high". That's not bad, though, its been at orange for a long time, almost two years. I have heard of no potential terroristic activity from the FBI or DHS as of late. I'm sure he'll be fine. Probably the worst thing that will happen to him is eating nasty airline food, overpaying for a bottle of water at the airport, and having to wait for a taxi or a rental car shuttle. Tell him to fill up the rental car before returning it, and to check the car carefully before he accepts the car and when he drops it off. Rental car companies will ream him if he returns a car damaged or with an empty gas tank.

Are pov's allowed at AIT...specifically Fort Rucker?
Question:
I'm gonna be at Rucker for WOCS this summer. I live in Washington State, my car is in Houston for work. Do I drive my car to Washington and leave it there? Or, do I store car in Houston until after basic then bring it to Rucker?

Answer:
I am about half way through flight school down here at Rucker (I assume basic to WOCS thats what you are coming down for as well). First of all, WOCS isn't technically AIT... its candidate school, but whatever. Yes, cars are allowed, although they will be locked up during class. You will get to go start it, make sure it is still running, etc every sunday. However, before you start class, which may be as much as a few weeks coming from basic, you will be allowed to use your car every afternoon and on weekends. When I went through we went down to Panama City Beach a couple of times, so I would definitly suggest having your car. It gives you alot more freedom, and makes waiting for class suck alot less. Besides, after WOCS, you are going to be here at Rucker for another year and a half +, so you might as well get it here sooner than later. Good luck, and if you have any basic, WOCS, or flight school questions, shoot me an email

Voter registration on Fort Lewis?
Question:
Does anyone know if you can register to vote somewhere on Fort Lewis Army base? If so please let me know. I know I am late a registering but I have a crazy life. I here tomorrow is the last day for Washington state. Is this true also? I do not have a car to go outside base either so this makes it that much harder for me to do things. Thank you for your time!

Answer:
Talk to your leadership. There are mandates from the federal government that military leadership give you all the info/help you need to register/vote

Looking for a place for my Fiance and I in Washington state..Please help?
Question:
My fiance is in the Army, he told me he will be stationed in Fort Lewis, WA, I am currently in Vegas attending UNLV, i applied to the University of Washington in Seattle to move in with him next semester. (I have not been admitted yet but am hopeful). I was looking through the school site and Radford seemed like a good place but i am looking for a compromise in distance between UW and Fort Lewis because we only have one car. oh i dont know if our age will hurt our chances but we are only 18, i know some campus halls you had to be 19 or 20 to live there. thanks :)

Answer:
Fort Lewis is about 45min drive away from Seattle, 2hrs with traffic. The best compromise would probably be anywhere between Federal Way and Tukwilla, but traffic in this area is extremely bad. UW also has a campus in Tacoma which is much closer to the base and there are many other smaller colleges in the area.

A Place in New York Area to Live?
Question:
I am currently a 26 year old college student at Fashion Institute renting a room in Washington Heights (172nd st and Fort Washington Ave NY) and I currently pay 600. My husband is back in Virginia and we pay 1000 for a 4 bdr house. We have two miniature Italian Greyhounds. He will be moving up here to work at Fort Hamilton Army base in Brooklyn. I'm not trying to pay more than I'm paying now for living combined (1600). I will rent out my house in VA and move but I'm not sure where. I've been thinking of living in a multifamily home or renting a house somewhere affordable. An apartment may be too small. I liked areas like Long Island City where there's reliable transportation (I also have 2 cars in VA by the way), nice and quiet, uncongested, and close to the city. Any other place like that? I'm open to New Jersey also and I'll go as far New Rochelle... Please help.

Answer:
With two dogs you will not find anything. Use a realtor to find you what you need.

Answer:
based on where you two will be working/going to school, my concern would be how far you would really want to live from those two places. NJ and New Rochelle are fine places to live, but the commutes will be killer. i doubt you would want to commute an hour plus each way every day, and the farther away you live the more you're at the mercy of bad traffic or inconvenient bus/train schedules. i might reconsider renting an apartment - maybe you could find a spacious enough floor-through in a house, in which case Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, might be an idea. from there it's a short drive to the base, and it isn't too long by R train into Manhattan and maybe a transfer to the #1 to FIT. there may be rentals of entire houses, like row houses, in Bklyn, but they are likely to be more expensive that $1600. if you weren't having to commute to FIT, i would almost say look for a house on Staten Island.

Anything interesting to see / do in February or March?
Question:
I live near Washington, Louisiana and am willing to travel by car about 350 miles which would put me within the circle of these places: Victoria, Gonzales/Luling, Austin, Temple, Fort Worth, Texas, Mead, Oklahoma, Fort Smith, Arkansas, Memphis, Tennessee, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Destin, Florida. Hurry, I must inform my supervisor of dates I will need to take off. My company is going out of business and they want me to take my vacation within February or March. Thank you for reading and advising!

Answer:
Check out Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Typically it is sold out years in advance, but since Katrina, there has been availabilty. You mentioned Austin, TX. Austin is always got something happening.
