I want to ship my car to Scottsdale Arizona from Bethesda Maryland?
Question:
I need to ship my car from Bethesda, Maryland to Scottsdale, Arizona in early winter and back to Maryland in the spring. How do I find the most reliable company to do this? Would my auto ins cover this trip if something would happen and are these companies bonded? I am handing over my car with the keys and it scares me a little bit. Any pros or cons would be helpful also.

Answer:
You can either contact an auto transport company and have the car transported on a car carrier, or you can hire someone to drive it cross country. You would be looking at about $1250-$1750 for each trip on a car carrier. A couple of things you should know. The car transportation companies are really brokers. They will give you a quote, and they put the trip on line for independent carriers (who have provided them with proof of insurance) to bid on the job. This means that the car may or may not arrive on time. The driver of the car carrier is trying to maximize the load and rather than going straight from MD to AZ, may go by way of Chicago or Las Vegas. Shop around, and check out consumer complaints on line before you book. You may want to consider driving the car yourself seeing as when you add the savings of the cost of the flight, and consider the cost of fuel and hotels, it may not be that much more

Where should I live near Bethesda, Maryland?
Question:
I will move to Bethesda, Maryland, and work in a Navy base(Cardrock. I guess only Ride on 32 bus going to there), so where should I live? Any suggestions? I don't have a car, but I will buy one in a few month. So for the first few months, I will reply on the public transportation, so I am considering a place, which is close to Ride on 32 bus station, and also easy for parking(when I buy a car). I don't know much about Maryland, but I do know it is hard to park in New York City. Is it Rockville MD close to Ride on bus station? 20 minutes walking distance is fine for me. Or any other suggestions? Thank you very much!

Answer:
I don't know the bus system in that area, but I do know that Bethesda is only about 5 miles away from Carderock. Rockville is about 10 miles away, and Ellicott city is about 30 miles away. The suburb of Glen Echo is a little closer to Caderock than Bethesda is, but I've never been to Glen Echo so I can't say if it's a nice area to live in. You should live in downtown Bethesda if possible. It's no NYC or DC, but it's a nice little city with lots of shops restaurants, bars, etc. Another great thing about Bethesda is that it also has a stop on the DC metrorail (DC's subway system), so you can easily get to downtown DC without a car. http://www.downtownbethesda.com/ http://www2.bfrl.nist .gov/userpages/wmell/DIRECTIONS_TO_NIST/dc_metrorail_system_map.j pg

In Va (Arlington or Alexandria) or in Maryland (N.Bethesda or Rockville) Where to reside?
Question:
I will be interning in this coming spring in DC and have to pick out of those locations for my housing. Will the lack of a car have more significance in any of these particular towns? If you are familiar with the region, I would really appreciate ur insight of those options. thanks N. Stuart St. Arlington, Va N. Taft Street, Arlington, VA First Street, Alexandria, VA Grosvenor Place North Bethesda, MD Maryland Ave. Rockville, MD

Answer:
If you aren't driving, check your proximity to a metro station, and make sure there is a bus route there if you aren't at walking distance. The website is http://www.wmata.com . If you will work in NW near Tenleytown, Grosvenor and Rockville are probably better. If you are working closer to Capitol Hill or Georgetown, Virginia will probably be better. I think that all the places you have picked are close enough to shopping, etc. that you won't have any big problems, but check that out on yahoo maps, especially if you want a grocer you can walk to every other day rather than taking a cab back from once a week. Most of those are big streets, so a specific answer isn't possible--First street runs through two zip codes, parts of which don't have much nearby, while other parts are in the middle of everything.

is it a good idea to commute from bethesda, md to arlington, va?
Question:
I am taking a job starting first week of sept. it is based in arlington. the problem is, i am just starting out, and i cannot afford a decent living space (1 bedroom 1 bath apt) in northern virginia. I've been looking into bethesda maryland, and there seems to be some good options for apts under 1500/month. would it be a good idea to commute (either by metro or car...but preferably by metro) 5 times a week from arlington to bethesda?

Answer:
Congrats on the new job. Your Metro commute will require a transfer between the Red Line (Bethesda) and Orange Line (Arlington) at Metro Center. Plan on _at minimum_ 40-45 minutes at rush hour rates (~$2.55) daily depending on which Arlington station is close to your job. On the down side, any major disruptions/delays grind the Metro system to a halt (particularly on the older Red Line and on the Orange Line). On the plus side, your new employer may offer pre-tax dollars for Metro fare. The Washington Post offered an informative article last year on "Where to Live, and How to Get to Work From There" that says for "Bethesda-Grosvenor-Rockville ... The neighborhoods in the Red Line corridor between the Bethesda and Rockville stations offer many housing options. A commute via public transportation to downtown Washington is 35 minutes to an hour, or much worse with significant Red Line delays. Transferring to the Blue and Orange lines to Capitol Hill or Arlington can mean commutes of more than an hour. But if you live in this area of Montgomery County and decide to drive to an office in Virginia, be prepared for regularly congested traffic on the Capital Beltway." -- DC resident and daily commuter on the Red Line

Can my bosses read my email?
Question:
I work at a car dealership in Bethesda, Maryland. Do you think my bosses can read my email? Wouldn't you think they would have more pressing issues? And if they can read it-Hi Kevin! Hi Pete!

Answer:
Generally, they are legally able to view emails, websites visited, etc. on their computers and networks. Whether they would is a different question - depends on how much you're costing them. However, some employers are treating this sort of thing as 'theft of services' and firing or even legally charging employees who do it. Ask about your employer's policies. Be very careful.

What is the cheapest renters insurance for an apartment. My new building says I need it to cover $100,000?
Question:
I am moving to as new 1br apartment and the building says I need renters insurance in the amount of $100,000. I have never bought renters insurance before so I need help. I would like the cheapest rate possible. I do not have car insurance so matching it with other insurance is not an option to get a lower rate. I am in Bethesda Maryland if it makes a difference.

Answer:
Call a few local agents. What your complex wants is $100,000 in liability coverage which is pretty standard. What impacts the premium the most is the personal property coverage amount(your stuff) and the deductible. If you want a really really cheap policy, ask for the minimum amount of personal property, which is usually $5,000-$10,000, and the highest deductible possible. In my area, Denver, that policy is about $85 a year.

We need apartment recommendations for DC Metro Area/North Virginia/South Maryland?
Question:
My fiancee and I are moving to the Washington DC metro area, we have a budget of around 1500 to 2000 max for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. We are looking in areas like Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, Bethesda, Silver Spring, etc. Mainly we want a clean, non-infested apartment complex with good management in a safe area somewhat close to metro/shopping. I have done some research on the nicer areas around DC, but most apartment reviews are all bad. Anyone have a good recommendation for us? Also- we have two very small, well-behaved dogs, and two cars. We would like a nicer apartment, (stainless steel appliances, hard surface flooring) but for the budget, we think it would be hard to do so unless only in a one bedroom. Thanks guys for your suggestions.

Answer:
There are so many apartment complexes in the DC area in all those places you list. Get a copy of the Washington Post or get on their website and you'll be overwhelmed with the variety. That said, you can get a fairly nice 1 BR under 2K (no utils included), but will be hard pressed to find a 2BR in a safe neighborhood on that budget, unless you look way way outside the beltway (Woodbridge, Leesburg, etc...). Also, almost everyplace inside the beltway will charge you extra per month to park (per car), and the places that accept pets will charge extra per month for them also.

Answer:
Do you actually have a point – any kind of point – with this litany? McVeigh, for example, was executed. What are you asking?
