What is inbound and outbound when talking about street cars in new orleans?
Question:
I'm trying to take a street car somewhere and I need to know which direction is inbound and which direction is outbound.

Answer:
Canal Street is the origin for the Saint Charles Avenue streetcar, so heading uptown would be outbound and returning would be inbound. The Canal Street streetcar starts close to the river, so headed toward City Park Avenue would be outbound. Not sure about the Riverfront streetcar. It originally started at Canal Street but now crosses Canal. http://www.norta.com/

Has anyone been hearing of dealers buying flood cars from new orleans?
Question:
I have heard that they are buying them and cleaning them up,and reselling them back to consumers without thier knowledge

Answer:
With over 600,000 vehicles damaged by floodwaters, these cars and trucks will certainly end up on car lots and dealerships lots as well. The state of California has found numerous vehicles at some of their auctions as well as other states. I recently issued a Press Release reminding consumers about this very topic. Why is the track gage of New Orleans Trolly Cars 6" wider than standard Railroad Gage of 4' 8 1/2"?

Answer:
Track gauge refers to the spacing of the two rails used by a trolley or other rail vehicle. Most are built to standard railroad gauge of 4 feet 8 ½ inches. However, some systems (New Orleans, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh) use a wider track gauge that was adopted in the 1800s when streetcars were introduced. One North American heritage trolley operation (Detroit) uses a narrower rail spacing, as its initial cars came from a European city (Lisbon) that used a very narrow track gauge. Cars built for one gauge normally can be converted to operate at another gauge, but the cost can be substantial. Standard gauge track came over from England, and there is some thought that it developed out of a size relationship to existing horse drawn equipment. In the USA, a few Northern railroads adopted narrow gauge early, thinking that they would import many railway parts from England (which didn't happen). In the South they tended to use broad gauge; not so sure anyone knows why, but one idea is that they were more likely to not be aligned with England. Many early engineers thought that the standard gauge was suboptimal for the needs of railroads, and most of the South used the 5 foot gauge until after the Civil War when the "standard" gauge was established by President Lincoln to allow for the development of a unified rail system.

How easy is it to live in New Orleans without a car?
Question:
I am not very fond of cars or driving and would like to relocate to a gay-friendly American city where public transportation, bikes and walking will get me just about anyplace I need to go in the city. Since Manhattan and San Francisco are too pricey ... and Chicago is too cold, I was considering New Orleans. If I lived in the French Quarter/CBD/Garden District, is a "car free" lifestyle possible? Or is a professional GWM considered a complete freak (or loser) in NOLA if they don't own a car? Thanks

Answer:
There's a certain kind of folk who live in the quarter : ) Depending on where you work you could manage it easily. Walking or biking in the summer months, and by summer months I mean like... April - October, can be rough because of the heat and humidity, the trolley and bus can get you where you want to go. They can also get you places you definitely do not want to go so be careful to learn where is safe and where isn't. New Orleans is GLBT friendly in general, the quarter even more so. Garden District is probably a little farther than you want to be, again depending on where you find a job. New Orleans does have a pretty high crime rate right now so you may want to look into it carefully before moving, but you'd be welcomed by the vast majority of people. Good luck to you.
