Can't start engine of 1989 Cadillac El Dorado. Stopped car engine in drive but was not moving.?

I need help to find out how to start my car engine. I stopped my car engine quickly when I pulled over and stopped but had not put the car's gear in the "Park" position. Now, I go to start the engine but it will not even turn over or allow the key to move forward so to even try to start it. Help....please....any suggestions are greatly appreciated....... I have my car in park and the steering wheel moves but the key is blocked somehow from moving all the way forward to turn the engine over. The manual is not helping. Thanks for all suggestions.....

edit- you might need a new ignition switch then. you could try to force it loosewith a screw driver at your own risk. if the steering wheel locks, meaning you cannot move the steering wheel when the car is off, or the key is not in the start position. try moving the steering wheel back and forth while trying to crank the engine, it is designed to not start the car in gear if you got into park try the wheel if not try again to get it into park. i have seen where it takes force, (moving the steering wheel ) back and forth while moving the key back and forth.

Recently i locked my keys in my car. Attempting to open it with a clothes hanger i knocked the rods out of place in the drivers seat door. Now the door doesnt open from the inside or outside. The window rolls up and down but falls out of place. Other than that i can't even get the door open to get to the panel. How or what kidna tools do i need to get this door open once so i can put the rod back in place?

Why does my car idle so low?

I just bought a 98' Cadillac El Dorado. The car is in great condition except for this one problem. It idles very low. The engine will rev between 500 and 1000 rpms. It starts right up in the morning but if I turn it off and try to start it up 30 min later I have to pump the gas just to get started.

well they are supposed to idle at about 800 so that's not to bad but as far as pumping the gas that's odd because if its a 98 it is fuel injected which means that pumping it wont really do any thing is throwing any codes??? i would think it maybe the throttle modulator

You will not see any gas savings from dropping an undersized engine in a massive heavy car. Instead you will be looking at big bills from repairs from the little guy trying to get the job done. You would have to change the gear set up and everything to try to make it work, but why go all Monster Garage on it? Just get a smaller car to work with and forgo the land yacht.

As a former owner of a Caddy Eldorado, I can tell you that they are not well engineered automobiles. The Coupe de Ville is a better made automobile. Many of the Eldorados had front wheel drive, which results in expensive repairs for axles and wheels. Also, any automobile after 1991 usually has a computer in it, and that makes it very difficult and expensive to repair. With 85 thousand miles, expect some serious things to need repairs, like the transmission or maybe the motor. Certain vintage autos were built to last forever. Some old Fords like I have hardly need much repair and stand up well for a long time. Some vintage Chryslers were magnificent automobiles, and will run forever. I doubt any Eldorados or Mark Lincolns will last long enough without getting you in debt for repairs and maintenance. A 1987 to 1991 Ford Crown Victoria will give you better results. And you will have most of the luxury that you get with an Eldorado.
