Answer:
I always prefer to drive. If you have never driven on a vaca together, you will learn a lot! Also, its always good to have a vehicle in case you need to "get away" :)

Do i haveto register car again?
Question:
I just recently bought a car a month ago in Illinois but now I have moved to Dubuque (tri-state area) which is in Iowa because I got job there and I rent my apartment there now. IA states states they "require" to register your car there within 30 days since establishing residence but I see many locals here, just wait until they registration expires. I got one year left on mine. Should I rush to change plates and my driver's license or can I keep them from IL. I would have to pay again $200 bucks for car and to renew driver's license here. I have my old address with family which still lives there (my parents). I pay taxes from my pay stub to Iowa and I got car insurance from Geico for Iowa. Other than that I have all the rest from IL (DL, plates, even some bills). While it would be convenient all in one place, its hassle to change and I see many don't bother until their registration/plates expire. What do you think? What can be consequences of not registering here? btw I paid my taxes on car to IL.

Answer:
When you're caught, it will be more of a hassle to have your car towed, have to pay multiple citations, and then have to do everything you just mentioned....

Should I transfer my plates and driver's license?

I replaced 2005 Hyundai Tucson timing belt 20,000 miles ago and the mechanic didn't put it in correctly.?
Question:
I have a 2005 Hyundai Tucson with about 80,000 miles on it. At about 60,000 miles I had the timing belt replaced which would've been about 2 years ago, since then my car has had all kinds of problems, most recently it was stalling, so I took it to the dealership and they told me that the mechanic that had replaced the timing belt had put it in wrong and that it caused metal shavings to get in the engine and they estimated to repair everything for $900. Should I really have to pay to fix it when they caused it in the first place? Is it worth getting it fixed? I asked if it could be driven on the highway, but the didn't recommend it. I researched on the internet and there was a 10 year/100,000 mi. drivetrain warranty, would any of this be covered? I bought the car used,so I'm not sure if the warranty would be transferred. The dealership never wants to help me with anything, and never returns my calls to get it in for service or for them to check it out. Its had problems since the 1st month I bought it 2 years ago. I bought it from Dubuque Auto Plaza, in Iowa http://www.dubuqueautoplaza.com/ If by chance I do want to get a different car, probably used, which brand would you most recommend? Thanks!

Answer:
I can't figure out if you're saying the dealer replaced the belt or an independent shop did it... If the dealer did this, they should eat the cost. If they don't want to, usually a call to the BAR is enough to make them reconsider. I'm still trying to figure out how a bad timing belt install allowed "metal shavings to get in the engine"? This doesn't make sense to me, but I'm sure there's an important piece of information that was omitted.

I need a good lie or story to tell my parents, I will have an extra 300 miles when I get back home?
Question:
I am going up to wisconsin this week. volunteered to pickup two people from central iowa. I am from illinois. i had to tell my parents the truth (im 19) of the route to central iowa, to wisc and then a week later drop my friends back off in central iowa to come back home to illinois. they wouldnt allow this, and so ive lied to them saying that ive arranged to meet these two ppl in dubuque, ia. problem is though my dad wrote down the mileage, and from illinois-central iowa-wisconsin-iowa-illinois is 809 miles (15hr round trip), as il-dubuque-wis-dubuque-il is only a 10 hr round trip, 506 miles...... so my question is, what lie / story can i tell my parents to make this all work, or anything else to help me out when i get back and i have an extra 300 miles on the car, let alone time. im more worried about the miles, for there can always be an "accident" or "backup"....

Answer:
don't lie to them. they won't trust you after that and then you'd have to earn their trust again.

Answer:
Driving sounds like the best option to me, big city parking could be an issue though. Find out from his parents if parking will be an issue, chances are they have an easy solution. Driving will be much cheaper then buying 2 return airplane tickets. Depending on your budget the drive can be as cheap as possible or as enjoyable as possible. 13 hours is nothing between two people, easily do-able if prepared to drive non-stop. Save money by packing drinks and food. It will also cut down the drive time significantly. A tip to make the non stop drive more bearable, start driving before sunrise to get the most driving time possible during daylight. The other thing you could do is stop along the way. Maybe stop places on your way there and then do a non stop trip back home, or vice versa. The money spent on accomodations for the evening will still bring you under the airplane ticket budget, while also maybe making a little vackay for yourself. Really the decision comes down to you. Do you have the money to throw away on plane tickets, rental cars etc.. Do you have the type of money to spend the night in a hotel on your way.. or are you strapped for cash (or just looking to save) and want to make the non stop trip. So many variables, I hope you make the right decision that works for you.
