How can I get from Ames to Des Moines Iowa? Question: I don't have a car, and I would like to know whats the best way to get to Des Moines. Is there like a bus you can take or something? Or would I have to rent a car and if I did how much would that be? The reason I ask is because my cousin is coming to visit me and I have to go get her at the airport the day she arrives and take her the day she departs. Also Im not sure if they would rent a car to an 18 year old. Answer: Its only about 30 miles or so.. and all interstate. Doesnt take long at all Im sure there would be a bus, but renting a car would probably be about the same. Maybe you could split the cost with her. Parking Spots in Des Moines Iowa? Question: I'm taking the Mega Bus tomorrow morning in down town Des Monies Iowa at Walnut and 4th street. I'm going to be gone for about a week so is there any long term parking spots around that area? Maybe a parking garage? I'm coming from Ames Iowa so it would be helpful to know I would be leaving my car in a safe area. Thanks! Answer: There are A LOT of parking garages. Don't worry, your car will be safe. You can take your chances parking in the Court Ave district (there's a giant parking lot - free - right next to a restaurant called Dos Rios)...but that's a popular parking area for the bar hoppers at night and I don't want any idiot drunk drivers accidentally hitting my car parked there. |

Im leasing a car from this guy and he has jusst come and taken it. Police wont help what should I do? Question: I met this guy when I just elocated to Ames, Iowa and I started leasing this car. I made a small payment beca;use that was all I had. I spoke things over with him and let him know what was going on and he said fine. I havent talked with him in a while and the other day he just came and took the car with out saying anything. I tried to contact the police but they wont help. The funnny thing is, he never acted like this bfore my husband came here! My husbands tools are in the car and he was suppose to bring them back, but he has not called or come by what should I do? Answer: Report the tools as stolen and take the guy to small claims court. You say you were leasing the car, but did you have any paper work? If not then you were borrowing the car and he just took his property back. so the police don't want to get involved in a civil matter. Report the tools as stolen, so you have a police report then file in small claims court. |

What measures to take if I have to park a car in open for one month in severe cold conditions? Question: Hi, I am from Ames, Iowa. The temperatures for the next one month will be -20 to -30C and will be snowing. I have to leave the country for one month and couldn't find an underground parking for the vehicle. So I have to park the car in outside parking for one month. Will it damage the car? What are the steps I should take if I have to park it in open for one month in such cold and snowing weather? Thanks Answer: Go to an auto parts store, Walmart/K-Mart or similar and buy an inexpensive coolant temperature check. Easy to use, and will tell you how cold your anti-freeze will Protect against. If less than -(minus) 20 F, you need to remove some coolant, and add straight antifreeze to bring it down to at least -25. Also if battery is weak or more than 3 years old it may be good idea to remove or replace it. Finally, fill the tank with gas (NOT ethanol) and add a can of "heat". |

Do Cops in Iowa have to show up for court for a traffic ticket? Question: I got a seat belt ticket the other night while driving home from work. The cop was a complete dick to me so I would like to not pay this ticket if i do not have to. Its a 127.50 ticket and i have never even had a speeding ticket or anything here and I was coming home from a pizza delivery job where I am in an out of my car constantly and forgot to buckle up after a long day of work. I just think a warning would have sufficed. FYI i was not speeding or doing anything else he pulled me over purely for the seat belt. If it depends on county this happened in Story County in Ames, Iowa and it was an Iowa State university Bike cop (I know BIKE COP). The reason i ask is because I'm originally from nebraska and i know that at least in my town they changed it to where the cop does not have to show up in court. Most states i think still do the thing where if the cop does not show up you automatically win. Answer: |

For example, West Des Moines Republicans were given a “bus ticket” for buses leaving the Walmart near Jordan Creek mall at 8 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Campaign aides declined to share the full bus schedule with the press, but said there’s a network of transportation options. Question: Hi im flying to iowa tomorrow and im only 20 so i cant rent a car and im flying into des moines and need to get to ames to go to ISU is there a bus that does that?? Answer: Greyhound buses do run from Des Moines to Ames. The one-way fare is 14.50. You may need to get a taxi from the airport to the bus station in Des Moines, and probably at the Ames end as well, unless ISU provides some kind of shuttle service.
