What's the cheapest transportation/stay arrangement for a guy in Northwestern Indiana (valparaiso)?
Question:
wanting to meet his girlfriend (who's from detroit) in Chicago? Is it that she drive a rented car from detroit to NWI indiana (pick BF from there) and head to chicago together OR that she flies from detroit to chicago midway airport while he takes the train from NWI to chicago ? If not renting a car, they'd have to use cabs from/to midway airport and train station and to explore the downtown while if they rent a car, they might end up spending too much on gas (driving from detroit to chicago and then going back to detroit plus downtown chicago exploration.) I'm not sure how the cost of cabs would stack up with the cost of gas in such a scenario? What's the price range of downtown chicago hotels at the time of the year? Would you say that the whole plan would work on a budget of about $ 500 using either arrangements? It's just too many things to consider in each case !!!

Answer:
You can catch the South Shore Line train (part of Metra) at the Dunes Park train stop. There is a new bus service from Valparaiso to the Dunes Park station. The train goes from there to downtown Chicago (Millennium Par) and costs about $12 round trip. (http://www.nictd.com/info/featured.htm#ValpoBus) For her, there are a couple of cheap options. One would be to fly. I believe it's actually cheaper to fly than to take a train from Detroit to Chicago. Let her check out Priceline or one of the other low-cost airline ticket services on line. The other cheap way is for her to take Megabus, a low cost bus service. They have buses the go all over the midwest, including Detroit. I did a quick search and found that a bus from Detroit to Chicago is $24 and the return bus is as low as $15. The bus stops at Union Station in downtown Chicago. (http://www.megabus.com/us/). Granted, the bus isn't a glamourous way to travel, but if getting here cheaply is important, you may want to consider it. As far as cheap hotels downtown, forget about it. The cheapest might be $90-plus a night. You might want to look into a hostel. It's a low cost lodging option that a lot of foreign students traveling through the US use, backpacking kind of stuff. There is one in the middle of downtown Chicago that charges from $27 to $31 a night. It has great access to all the attractions, museums, etc. (http://www.hichicago.org/chicago-hostel-reservations.shtml). If you MUST stay in a hotel, look at places away from the downtown area. They are generally cheaper. Try doing a search for hotels in the Greektown area of the city. As far as renting a car, forget it. Everything is pretty much close to public transportation anyway. The bus and train are great cheap transportation that goes all over the city for about $2 a ride. And you can get a bus card and save even more money. Get a map when you get here and you can figure out what you want to see and how you can get there. So, let's see: YOU can get here on the train for $12 roundtrip from Valpo, she can get here on the bus from Detroit for about $48 round trip, and you can spend $27 a night at a decent clean hostel in the middle of downtown Chicago. And riding the bus or train for about $2 a ride. That's about as cheap as you can go. With the money you save, take her out to a swanky restaurant.

What expenses can I expect when living on my own?
Question:
My fiance and I are soon to be getting our own apartment (within the month). I am a 22 year old Teachers Assistant and Elementary Education student. He is 20 years old and on disability. Our rent is $575-including utilities minus cable/phone. His disability check can cover the rent. I assume our other expenses will include groceries, cleaning products, tolietries, home/cell phones, car insurance ($140), gas, and we want to save for an April 2012 Wedding. What other expenses can I expect and how much should I expect to pay? I have lived on my own before-and bombed. I want to succeed this time. (NOTE: We will be living in Valparaiso, Indiana if it makes a difference). Can I have a housewarming party to help with kitchen things and such? Where can I find deals on furniture (we have nothing). Where can I find other money saving deals? I need help!

Answer:
You might also consider renter's insurance. Be sure to include taxes, auto registration fees, towels, and clothing in your budget. You may also want to include small amounts for entertainment (cable TV?), eating out, etc. You can cut these out if you need to, though. A housewarming party is not always considered an occasion for buying gifts, and it may seem impolite to ask for gifts. Your guests are more likely to bring you fresh flowers or a bottle of wine than they are to bring a toaster. In early 2012, though, you could have a kitchen-themed bridal shower, though. In the meantime, check with St. Vincent de Paul for furniture 219-464-1624 ext. 250, or shop at thrift stores such as Goodwill, for kitchen gadgets, towels, small appliances, etc. Buy your clothes at thrift shops too (but consider washing them before you wear them).

Is this a good beginning for a novel?
Question:
I awoke to the loud buzzard I call my alarm clock. The red digits flashed 6:35am. I groaned and turned the clock off. I'd do anything not to go to school today. I laid in bed, weighing my options. I decided it's best not to miss the first day to a new school. I rolled out of bed, stumbled over some boxes, and searched the wall for a light switch. I wasn't used to this room so I have trouble with things like this. I had just moved here about a week ago. My dad wanted us to get settled in before I got registered to North Adams High. It was early February and a thin sheet of snow had covered the the town of Valparaiso. We're located in northern Indiana, close to Chicago, next to Gary, and not to far from the Great Lakes. I expected cold weather like this. I finally managed to turn on the light and walk over to my dresser. I picked out a causal outfit I was happy with and moved to the small bathroom across the hall. I started brushing my long natural red hair. I always found it odd that I don't have freckles but I have light blue-green eyes with spears of brown around the pupil, which I found unique. I touched my face as I looked at the mirror. I couldn't find any noticeable flaws so I moved on to something else. After I finished my hygiene routine, I went downstairs to get a bowl of cereal. I almost tripped on my way down but luckily the wall caught me before tumbled down any farther. I ran my fingers through my hair to make sure I didn't mess it up too bad. Then I made my way to the kitchen. I made my cereal and sat at one of the four chairs around the tiny table. I ate slowly, taking each bite carefully, knowing I would be early. I rinsed my bowl out and put it in the sink. I slipped on my winter boots, found my way through my hoodie, put on some gloves, and gathered everything else I needed. My car smelled faintly of strawberries thanks to the air freshener. I own a 1997 used black Mustang. My dad bought it for me on my 16th birthday. I took out crumpled piece of paper, with the directions on it, from my backpack and read them twice then tossed the much abused paper in the back seats. I started the car and backed out of the drive way. I didn't know the school was about 1 and a half miles away from the house. Maybe I could walk on nice days. Maybe. I had to know the neighborhood first and if I made friends I could walk with them to lower the chances of being jumped but I wasn't really looking forward to making any enemies. I pulled in the student parking lot to find only four cars parked. I glanced at the radio clock and as I predicted, I was early. I parked in a good spot and reached over to the passenger seat for my backpack again. I pulled out my mp3 player and put my headphones in. I let my mind relax and flow with the music. I closed my eyes in harmony. I was interrupted by a tap on my window. I was on the second song so I paused it and took my headphones out. I rolled my window down. "Yes?" "Hi.." The strangers voice was quiet at first but it eventually became louder. "You're new, right? I haven't seen you around here before." "Yeah." "What's your name?" "Why don't you tell me yours?" He stood there, debating. "I asked first." I didn't have anything to say back so I gave up. "Fawn.." I was hesitant. "Last name?" "Richards. Now, what's yours?" "Shawn Raymor." Huh, our names rhyme. "So, what brings you here?" "My dad couldn't afford the rent and wanted a job. He thought it would be easier up here." It's a little embarrassing to admit that but honesty is the best policy, right? "Has he found one?" "Yes." "What does he do then?" "He's a 8th grade teacher at the middle school." "Oh, that's cool. You haven't mentioned your mom, does she live with you?" "What is this, 20 questions?" "Did I offend you?" "I just... don't wanna talk about it." "Sorry." I decided that was the end of the conversation so I rolled my window back up and started where I left off. **************************************** After a bit of thinking, I felt bad for being rude to Shawn but I could apologize later because I have no idea where he went. I stuffed my mp3 player back in my backpack and got out of my car. I slung my backpack over my shoulder, it supported itself with one strap. I walked into the school and, without surprise, it smelled like plastic and pencil shavings. The building must be new. The floor was tiles of white and gray with a big Green Devil in the middle. A green banner hung above the beginning of the one of three hallways quoting in yellow "Home of the Green Devils." Oh, so our mascot is Satan. That's nice. I glanced to the left and right hallway to see nothing but lockers and classrooms but no main office. My gut told me to go forward into the middle hallway and I obeyed it. I walked under the banner and past all the green and yellow lockers, looking for any sign of the office. The hallway came to the end in a T shape. Again, I looked both ways as if I was crossing the street. On the left, there were some glass doors and a small sign above them identifying the room as the main office. What a strange place for an office. The lockers smothered it, the doors not visible from the entrance because it was on the corner, facing the opposite direction you would expect. I looked inside and I saw a short skinny woman, with shoulder length black hair straight as a ruler and square glasses, stacking papers. She must have seen me because she motioned with her hands to come inside. I gripped the handle bar of the door and sighed. I took a seat in a ch air in front of her desk and sat my backpack down. Her name plate read Ms.Jameson. "Good morning. You must be Fawn Richards." she sounded polite but professional. "That's me." "Pleasure to meet you, I'm Ms.Jameson but you can call me Patty." She reached crossed her desk to shake my hand and I accepted. She was slow with sitting back down and she was staring at me intensely. "You have very pretty eyes but I'm sure you've heard that before." About a million times. "Thanks you, now can I get a map or a tour or something? I surprised I found my way here." She chuckled, spun her chair around and, pulled a drawer open from a gray filing cabinet behind her desk. Patty searched through yellow folders and found the right one in under three minutes. She took out some papers and tossed them on her desk. "Here." She said putting back the golden folder. I picked up the two papers. "This is my schedule and...?" It was a tiny sheet of paper with my name on it and under that was rectangular box s. "Your hallway pass." "Oh, thank you." "Are you ready for your tour? School will start in approximately twenty minutes, so we'll have to go now." I picked up my backpack. "Yeah let's go." She held the door open for me and we walked out with her in front of me. I saw Shawn leaning on a locker by a classroom. He had his hands in his pockets and was looking down at the ground. I didn't want to be rude and just leave Patty so I just stayed there. He turned his head my way and stared. I stared back. Patty looked at me then Shawn and back to me again. P.S I'm 13 and I need advice so don't sugar coat it :D Twilight's about Vampires this is about demons and the world ending. I don't see many similarities besides Fawn's new at school. Her mom died from child birth and she's been living with the guilt her whole life. This is just the beginning and I have to take things slow but not to detailed. Oh and this is a rough draft so please don't pay attention to the much abused word "I" because I already know that it's in there to much. I started writing it in early 2007 and I haven't really touched it since. So basically a 9/10 year old girl wrote this. Still lots of editing to do :]

Answer:
Oh dear lord of cliches...
