How can Indiana resident buy used cars in Chicago?
Question:
Hi All, I go to college in Indiana and hold an Indiana license. I'm working in Chicago this summer and thinking about buying an affordable used car here since there are way more options in the city. I'll go back to Indiana in the fall and would like to register the car as an Indiana one. Can anyone tell me how this should be handled? Also does it make a different to register in different cities in Indiana? For example Indianapolis vs Gary (Gary is a lot closer to Chicago)? Thank you very much. Also does it make a different to register in different cities in Indiana? For example Indianapolis vs Gary (Gary is a lot closer to Chicago)? One more question, do I have to bring the car with me to buy insurance (since is it not OK to drive without an insurance), and is it OK to buy insurance in Chicago?

Answer:
Any reputable car dealer will help you with the licensing. If you buy from a dealer they will issue a temporary tag that will permit you to drive the car for up to thirty days so you can get to a license branch to get the license plate of your choice. If you buy from a private seller, you will not get a temporary tag, but you can ask the seller to bring the car to you at a license branch so you can complete the transaction without running without plates. If, by doing that, you need to put Illinois plates on your car when you buy it, you can transfer the plate and fees to your Indiana registration at your convenience. Be sure to call the desired license branch to make sure they'll be open and able to process the transaction when you and the seller get there, and arrange with your insurance agent ahead of time to provide coverage starting on the date of the transaction. As for registering in various locations, the fees for license plates are set by the state, but individual counties may add their own local fees. Visit the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles website to see what the fees will be. And remember to buckle up! Best Regards, Grandpa Frank Indianapolis

Need help on what to do next?
Question:
my uncle was shot in the chest in gary, indiana yesterday by a gang who carjacked his expensive bmw car. he is in serious condition at hospital but knowing him he will not press charges, he has been shot before because he has to travel to places like baltimore and detroit. but enough is enough, im in cincinatti and what should me or my family do. my uncle will be too scared, please help. thanks.

Answer:
First, I hope he recovers fully. That is horrible. Hang in there! 2nd: There really isn't much you are going to be able to do. The law will pursue the carjackers and charges will get put on them if they are caught. It's out of your uncle's hands now. If I were you, as soon as the thugs are caught, get in touch with the DA. Let him know your uncle is in fear of his life. (I don't blame him.) Push for the harshest sentance. Don't let up. Let the local newspapers know. Keep people up to date. Let everyone know what's going on each step of the way. The DA will be too embarrassed to let them off easily if the public is involved. GOOD LUCK!

Traveling from N.W. Indiana to Valdosta, Georgia?
Question:
Ok here is the thing as the title implies I am trying to travel down to Valdosta, GA from Northwest Indiana and I don't know how I want to exactly travel yet. If it matters I need all the help people are willing to give me and ill forever thank yall. I am trying to make this trip to see the most amazing girl in the world so I NEED HELP YALL lol. See here is my dilema: If I take a Greyhound bus (I would depart from Gary, IN) I don't know how long of a trip (time wise it will be) and than ya hear all the 'horror stories' of riding on the greyhounds from crazies (like the one who killed some guy in July 08 in Canada on one with a large hunting knife) and the drunks/druggies/trouble makers. Now this don't worry me too much (I ain't a small guy so no worries) I just enjoy getting from point A to point B in one piece lol. See the ticket I believe I was quoted $135 round trip (somewhere between that $135-$150 I don't remember) but I haven't been able to get an estimation yet on the time it takes to get there. Also I have a license to carry a handgun (IN gun permit and do carry, and my permit is valid in GA and I wanna take my handgun with me for obvious named safety reasons, yet they don't want you to carry in your luggage (WTF?) so should I carry on me and hope for the best like most people have? I would be leaving out of a ghetto kind of Depot (Gary, IN) doubt they would check and arriving in a town that's not really city so doubt they would check either (GA is gun friendly, it's greyhounds stupid policies I am worried bout). I would just feel safer. SO I would like to know the travel time I'm looking at here if I take the bus. Also any info about my handgun carrying is much appreciated (better safe than sorry.) Now Option 2 is take a one way flight out of Chicago airport (I live right near Chi-Town so it ain't far) for about $180 is some quoted flights to the airport in Valdosta, GA. (I could also take my handgun lol and pack it in my luggage and warn them, I know TSA laws.) SO I would also get there within like 5 hours! Estimated time driving is almost 15, how much longer would the bus take? Any ideas please please on that estimate. I may just opt for the plane and have to fork over the extra $$$. Links for flights or prices or anything is appreciated to. What does the Y!A community think is best and any way to help I appreciate it. And no taking a car is outta the question cuz mine is a POS and would cost almost as much for a plane ticket (just for the gas.) So please please help me here, I will be forever greatful. Thanks yall.

Where to park my car in Chicago?
Question:
I can't pay $200 to park my car for a couple weeks while I'm home with my parents in New York, I will be leaving from Chicago just before Christmas. I asked this question earlier and didn't get any legitimate answers. Where can I leave my junky car for a couple weeks for less than $50 or free in the Chicago to Gary Indiana area? It is piece of junk worth $400 on a good day, leading me to believe it is not a target for thieves. First person to give me information that leads to finding a spot gets best answer. Where? obviously I can't leave it anywhere in Chicago people will think it is an abandoned vehicle. I am looking far parking I have looked into every other reasonable option, the train eats up my whole day, and night, and the bus is even worse. I am at school at Purdue in Indiana about 120 miles from the airport so if I can get within public transit distance I am fine. Which brings me to my next issue the train only leaves once a day, and it is after my flight, so I would have to either stay up all night or sleep like a bum in the airport, if I take the bus I have to leave two days early. There is an air port shuttle but it costs almost as much as parking, I think a found place where I can park for $3 a day, and I will just have to take the light rail for about an hour.

Answer:
Why don't you just leave your car at home and take the greyhound bus? If that doesn't work... Well don't you have friends there? I guess you could park it at a campus AND THEN take the greyhound.

Where to live in Chicago???
Question:
Okay, I'm a 23 year old college grad who just got a sweet job with U.S. Steel in Gary, Indiana. Knowing that Gary is kinda ghetto and I would like to live near the nightlife, hott chicks, bars, restaurants, etc, near Chicago. From the research I've done on here, it seems Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park are the hot spots to live. Are these areas near all the bars and nightlife or what? Also, can I park anywhere with my car/how hard is it to find parking? Finally, how long will my commute to U.S. steel be to Gary, Indiana. Thanks.

Answer:
Yeah, definitely do not live in Gary. The place is scary. You want to live in Chicago. Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Wrigleyville probably do have the highest percentage of singles and bars and nightlife. The boundaries of those neighborhoods are from North Avenue on the south to Irving Park on the north, the lake on the east and Ashland on the west. You'd have a bit of a commute to Gary, which means you'd probably want to be close to either the interstate on the west end or Lake Shore Drive on the east end - so the street that probably would be best for you to look around is Fullerton Avenue, perhaps around Sheffield (at which point you'd also be close to the L train, and there are *lots* of beautiful singles around there.) Parking is terrible, although you can get a parking permit for the neighborhood if you live there, and that eases things up a bit. Plus, from one of your previous questions, it sounds like you'd be getting home around 4 PM. If that's the case, the parking spaces should still be open, you can just park your car and use public transportation to get around. The commute to Gary is probably going to be 45 minutes or so. It's a reverse commute, so it's not as bad as you might think. There is another neighborhood you might consider, Bucktown, which is around the corner of North, Damen, and Milwaukee. It's a bit more artsy, but still filled with singles and a bit further south, putting you close to the interstate. It's a nice area, but if it were me, I'd probably choose to live in Lincoln Park and try to get close to Lake Shore Drive so I can hop on I-55 from there and get on the interstate. Fullerton and Sheffield or Clark or so. I think that might work well for you.
