Can I cut my mother off completely? Question: My question is: Can I stop my maternal mother from seeing my children? I live in Kahului, Hawaii Here is some background information... I have 2 children; 1 boy who will be 9; 1 girl who just turned 1. My maternal mother has a history of drug (on & off, crystal meth) and alcohol (frequent) abuse since I was 13 years old actually. I have let my son spend time with her including sleep overs when she is sober and not using alcohol and drugs, but lately she has become more dependant on her drug use... she had recently been evicted from her last residence and came to live with me. My rules were clear no drinking and drugging at my residence, after 1 week there were signs of drug use (sitting in my living room picking at here legs for no apparent reason, no appetite for a day or two, staying up for whole day, very unusual behavior and out of ordinary things). In the past when my son has been allowed to stay with her for a weekend I would get calls from family members that she was driving around highly intoxicated with my son in the car. My son comes home and tells me that my mother shoplifts from stores while he is with her ( he tells in detail how she steals). A lot of other bad habits that a child should not have to know. It seems that when I tell my son "no" he goes to grandmas and gets what I do not allow ( My son wanted a B.B gun...I said no he was only 7 years old, my mother goes and buys him one, no one was watching him shoot the gun and he almost shot the neighbors child one day. There have been many physical fights between my mother and her boyfriend in front of my child. My daughter has not been around mt mother as much to her bad influence...My mother also yells and treats her boyfriends daughter (10 years old) very negatively also calling her stupid and she so dumb, teases her about her eyeglasses......I have also heard from other family members that when I am not around she will yell and cuss at my son as well......there have been many more events that have made me not want my children around her but the last straw was when she had a physical fight with her boyfriend and it had to do with drugs ( he woke up at 1:00 a.m and found her smoking ice as my son and his daughter were sleeping in the house). I told her from here on I do not want her around my children or my residence at all. I told her pretty much "Since she wants to do drugs, stay away from my family". She has recently told a family member that she is going to take me to court... Can I completely cut her out of mine and my children's lives for good? Answer: Although she is your mother, she has no legal rights to your children. I am a firm believer in family; however, it seems you have given her more than enough chances and times to be a good grandmother. Unfortunately, her presence is not in the best interest of your kids. Her habits or not bad for them to see, they present their grandmother in a very negative image exposing them to a horrible lifestyle. Until she cleans up her act she needs to stay away from you and your children |

Help with moving to Maui!? Question: Hi- I am on the mainland (Washington, D.C. exactly) and I am thinking of moving to Maui come next spring. I wanted to know of any suggestions for my move. I am looking at a job in Wailea- however I am aware that Kahului is the place to live. I currently do not own a car (I rely on public transportation), and I was thinking of picking up a moped once I get there (or if possible, relying on public transport- however I know the bus system is going to be limited). Also, I have a cat and I know that the regulations and preparation to get a pet into Hawaii is quite extensive. Can someone please advise? Thank you!! Answer: Aloha, and I live here in Maui, and I have heard that it is a lot easier to bring your animals, as they have shortened the quarantine time. As long as all the shots for the cat are up to date, you should have no big problems. You need to call the animal center here in Maui, to get all the procedures, or it is probably on the Internet. You will want a car, when you get here as the traffic is really bad, and you will need a way to get your groceries and supplies to where you will be living. You should check out Kihei, and Kihei Village for a one bedroom condo. Kahului is OK, as long as you are in a good neighborhood. Living here is much different than the mainland, and things move kind of slow here, but I do think that they have improved the bus system, so that may be to your advantage. A moped is OK for around town, but not for coming over here to the west side, as you have to deal with winds, that are maybe 20-25 mph, and it can be very hot, and there is a lot of traffic. Well, good luck, Aloha............... |
