Aloha! That is a great question. Suggestion: Do complete research before moving to Hawaii. You are wise to be concerned about costs. Rents & cost of living expenses in Honolulu are comparable to the highest in the nation - New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles... We have quite high cost of living expenses - housing, electric, water/sewage, food... Gasoline is currently $2.36/gallon - down from a high of over $4.00. We pay typically .50-.75 per gallon more than the Mainland & higher on other islands for gas. Food: Eggs are like $3.69/dozen, good bread is over $2/loaf... Grow your own garden, have some chickens for eggs, make your own bread - and get a car that is good on fuel. Try to NOT ship anything over, cuz that is expensive. Try to live "minimalist" here. Wages & benefits are *not* comparable to Mainland jobs. Unemployment is a concern here now; this is an island, after all. Many people have to have more than 1 job. Many homes have multiple generations of families living in them to make ends meet. It's great to live here, but I'm just sayin' - since you asked - it's very expensive to move here and to maintain a certain lifestyle here. Do complete homework before you make such a big decision. Places you can go on the bus: Arizona Memorial Route 42 Waikiki route 42 (other direction) , routes 19,20, E. B, You can take the circle island route 55 and go around the whole island, it takes about 3 hours. You can stop for lunch on the North Shore and see the BIG Waves.
