Should we move to Georgia from California?
Question:
We are recently retired, own a small home in So. California on a main street in a fast growing town. We're unhappy with the fast growth, so many people, and too many cars. Because of our medical insurance and finances, if we sell our home and relocate, our only option to be closer to our kids is Georgia. We want to use the profit from the sale of our home in Calif. to pay cash for another home so we won't have a mortgage payment. We will be going there soon to check it out. Does anyone have any advice for a native Californian about Northern Georgia? Weather, bugs, etc.? We're looking at Cartersville and Acworth (just north of Atlanta).

Answer:
I was born and raised in Atlanta, so I'll tell you what I can. By living in Ackworth or Cartersville, you should be able to avoid a lot of the growth that seems to be happening lately. I lived in Roswell and Marietta for a time, and I don't even recognize it anymore!! It's been a while since I've been up north, but that has always been a quiet part of the state. We do have our share of cold winters, but that's nothing compared to the muggy summers. I was stationed in California for 2 1/2 years (Vandenberg Air Force Base near Santa Barbara) and the dry heat just didn't compare with the humidity in Georgia. Be prepared to find a pool or soak yourself with hose when May or June comes around!!! Georgia also has it's fair share of mosquitos (especially far from the city areas) in the summer, so it might be a good idea to keep a can of "Off" on hand. As far as recreation goes, Georgia has plenty to offer. If you like amusement parks, look no further than "Six Flags Over Georgia". While it's not as pristine as Disney or other parks with the "Six Flags" moniker, there are plenty of coasters to challenge all. Stone Moutain is a great outdoor spot to spend a long weekend. Be sure to head there in the summer to check out the nightly laser show. If you are a sports fan, downtown Atlanta is the place to be. Even if you are not a fan of the Georgia teams, you can go to Turner field for baseball (one of the best ballparks in major league baseball), the Georgia Dome for football, and Phillips Arena for hockey. There are just too many things to list, so I suggest finding a guide to downtown Atlanta to find what you like. The people are also very friendly. I have brought many friends from all around the country to visit my home state, and each person has commented on how friendly and helpful everyone is. I'm not saying there aren't any unsavory types in Georgia, but you will be hard-pressed to find one. I hope this helps you, and I hope your move goes smoothly. Good luck with your endeavor, and welcome to "Hotlanta". By the way...make sure you head to downtown Atlanta, and grab a bite to eat at "The Varsity". It's right off of I-75, across from Georgia Tech. It's considered by many Atlanta-natives to be the Mecca of fast food.

Is my car dealer overcharging me?
Question:
My wife and I were supposed to be accompanied by a car dealer to a dealer's auction. The dealer never showed up and both my wife and I had took the day off work so she could purchase a car. Being that we took off from work and drove all the way to Cartersville Georgia I figured we would give it a shot and try and get into the auction anyway. After about an hour at the front desk of the auction and going back and forth with the dealer over the phone we were finally allowed into the auction under the dealers company. Even though the dealer never showed up we ended up purchasing a car for $4350 under his company as if we were employees of his. When I was initially quoted a dealers fee he mentioned $200 which I thought was high. After purchasing the car he then said the dealers fee was $250. We paid him his inflated dealers fee but he was extremely rude and very unprofessional during the entire process. Now he is saying to transfer the ownership of the car and to get the tag and title we would need to pay him another $374.50 His explanation is below: Sales tax 7% of $4350.......$304.50 Dealer's Service fee..............$50 (another dealer's fee.... wow) Tag fee................................$20 Totaling and additional......$374.50 on top of the inflated.........$250 Grand total.......................$624.50 (on top of the price of the car) I have purchased a used car from a dealer before and these fees and sales tax were never added on... I'm wondering is this normal and is there a way to transfer ownership and get the tag and title without this dealer? Please respond. Thanks.

Answer:
He only charged you $250! Not only that, but that included the auction fee! Yes! He gets charged by the auction for the purchase which sounds like right around $75 for that price range. Meaning you only paid $175 over the wholesale price. And yes you do have to pay tax to him. All dealers do it and if you didn't have to do it with another dealer before that just means he was doing something illegal. If I had a customer come to the auction with me and they were b---ing about having to pay $175 over I would have them walk home and keep the car.

Serious speeding ticket question?
Question:
I had my license suspended about 1 year ago and I got it back after 6 months. That time I was wrong and plead guilty. But just today at 6:15pm, I was on HWY 75 in Cartersville, GA, and I was in the far left lane doing approximately 80 mph with cruise control. A car was coming so fast up behind me and I sped up to over take a truck and the next thing i saw a volkswagon fly by in the far right lane, and as soon as i overtook the truck the undercover car's blue lights came on and i got cited for 110 Mph. I know i wasnt doing 110. So the cop asked my y i was speeding and i didnt say a word. I was trying to move out of the way out of courtesy. I dont get it. He was following the volkswagon and then he came so fast up right behind me and i moved out of his way and he pulled me over and said 110 mph in a 70. now the Georgia law says anyone under 21 who is doing 24 or more gets their license suspended for 6 months. and he said i was doing 40!! what kind of options do i have. I really cannot afford to get my license taken away from me a second time. i work and go to school. I'm in serious trouble. I just need some honest and sincere advice. thank you. Also, should I hire an attorney? I really need to go to school and work!

Answer:
Well under Federal law, The posted speed limit is as fast as you can go. Except to pass! Then they allow you to speed up 5 miles a hour, to pass. So plead guilty to only 110 in a 75. That should save you a few dollars.
