Questions Related to winter, springs cars

Change bad car battery now or in the spring? Car gets stored in winter.?
Question:
I store my Mustang in the winter and the battery recently failed a load test. I typically start the car every other week in the winter. My question is should I change out the battery now, or wait until spring when I am going to be driving it again? If I don't change it now, I will most likely have to jump it each time I go to start the car.

Answer:
WARNING! Bad advice above!!^^ I'd get a new battery now. Keep it inside, on a wooden bench, connected to a 2 amp trickle charger. Install it to run the engine and then bring it back inside when you're done. A dead battery can freeze and rupture in the dead of winter. That will cause lots of damage to you and your car if it happens. A frozen battery can explode if jumped, spraying acid all over you. People have been blinded permanently by this! You could "pickle" your engine for the winter, but the previous poster's advice is incorrect. To pickle an engine you must change the oil and filter -- do NOT leave it empty of oil! Then pull the plugs and "fog" the cylinders with motor oil. Tape off all openings (oil filler, air intake, exhaust, etc.) with a moisture-proof barrier tape and park it inside a garage. Pull the battery (new one) and place on a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger. Load test it every couple of weeks (an old sealed beam headlight works nicely for this) and check the fluid level and top off as needed with distilled water. Cover the car with a tarp that covers the entire vehicle.

my cars heater doesn't work and winter is here. I've checked antifreeze but still no heat.?
Question:
I'm sure the thermostat is working because the temp gauge goes up when the car is running. I've taken the car in to get the heater fixed before. When I picked up my car there was no heat and they said they replaced the blower motor. I told them my vent blew air but no heat. They took the car back and when I picked it up there was adequate heat. Enough for me to be satisfied. I think maybe they flushed the cooling system. I didn't drive the car much that winter. In the spring I drove the car and not long after it started to overheat. I took it in to a different garage. They fixed it from overheating. A while later my car was overheating again. The garage told me I had bad hoses that needed to be replaced. They also told me to get a different car. They fixed the overheating problem and that has been fine since. I still don't have any heat. I bought a plug into the cigarette lighter heater to clear up my windows from the frost but It's not good enough. I plug a hair dryer into the outside power outlet of the house and use it on high to clear my window. I know I need to get the heater fixed because I can't keep going on like this. I have 2 estimates from a garage in town who I trust. The first option is: coolant flush, flush heater core separately, 2nd coolant flush and fill. That cost $154.33 The second option is: to replace heater core and heater hoses. That costs $556.75. If I could just go out and buy a new car I would or a used car. My car is a 1993 Buick skylark 4 door sedan. If anybody has any advice on what I should do that would be greatly appreciated. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year! Matt in Connecticut

Can a rear wheel drive sport car drive in winter with snow tires?
Question:
I have an infiniti g35 that I just bought this spring and its first winter with me is fast approaching. its a rear wheel car, and I know sport cars in general are not made to be driven in snow. But, if I replaced all four tires with snow tires, will it perform as good in snow as any other car?

Answer:
Sure they can, I see them all the time. Get a separate wheel and tire combination. Its a good idea to go a size smaller with the wheel size, this also means the tire will be narrower. Tire rack has winter tire wheel packages, they also explain the winter tire wheel downsizing.

Any tips for restoring a car over the winter season?
Question:
Any tips or advice on restoring a car over the winter season? I need to restore one of my luxury cars during the winter. It will be outside cause im not gonna pay someone for restoring my car and have a chance at it been stolen. Being outside is the only way! I still have insurance on it in-case if anything happends but it is off the road considering insurance wise. I just need some advice too keep my car in good shape come spring time?

Answer:
You can get garages that are like large tents. It will give you a place out of the weather to work in. Lay down something to work on too. Even sheets of chipboard are better than grass and dirt. If it is on a paved driveway that is good too Here is one link to a maker of portable garages. http://www.sheltersofamerica.com/ I have seen people make their own too.

Is it possible or safe for a tourist to drive from Edinburgh to Stirling Castle in winter/early spring?
Question:
We are planning a return trip to Scotland and thought maybe Winter or early spring. However we really want to travel by car to Stirling and Broughty Ferry but have been told might not be suitable for tourists to drive during this time.

Answer:
The only reason that it may not be suitable is if they decide to repair all the bridges during the busy tourist season. Or In the event of a heavy snow fall. (Main roads are seldom blocked due to anything but the worst snow falls) The roads between Edinburgh, Stirling and Broughty Ferry (nr Dundee) are more than adaquate and should present no problem. A lot of it is on Dual carriageway or motorway. This may help with route:- http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp I would recommend doing it in early spring anyway. You will enjoy the trip more.

Car Winter Storage Questions? Changing oil before Winter or in Spring, Fogging Oil.......?
Question:
Storing My Car In My Heated Garage. Already Filled My gas tank & Put Stabilizer in it. -I will be storing it in the Garage from Nov.1st to Beginning of March. -I will prob start it 2-3 times over the winter then prob pull the battery and leave it the rest of the winter till spring. 1. I Have a 4cyl car made in the 80's TBI fuel injection with 90,000km with original engine. -Should I change the oil before winter or in the spring? 2. Is it at all necessary to pull the spark plugs & spray the cylinders with fogging oil?

Answer:
Heated Garage -- Change the oil in the fall- not necessary in the spring. Best to block it for winter, (all four tires off the floor). You can then start it, exercise the transmission seals , differential seals, wheel bearings, steering rack and pinion and CV joints - if equipped, and circulate the coolant. MAKE SURE the coolant is in first class condition. MAKE SURE the brake fliud has been changed every 3 to 5 years. Do not run the vehicle just to charge the battery. Always use a automatic portable charger on 4 - 6 - 8 amps for 2 hours once a month.

Do house flys sleep in the winter, then wake up again in the spring?
Question:
For example, I had a fly in my car last winter just on the floor and in the spring I had one (looked the same) buzzing around in the car after. But he seemed kind of retarded and slow, you could put your hand right up to him and he wouldn't even fly away? Why is this?

Answer:
Breeding continues throughout the year in warm parts of the country. In colder climates the larvae or pupae over winters and adults enter a resting state (diapause) in sheltered situations. http://www.hortnet.co.nz/publications/hortfacts/hf40 1042.htm The reason they can be slow in spring is because all the body's processes go faster when it's warm. The same is true for people and insects, because the chemical reactions and diffusion of molecules that comprise our metabolism all go faster. Mammals and birds create their own body heat to keep them functioning normally at all times, but insects don't (though some warm their flight muscles). So when it's cold, their bodies work in slow motion and if you see a fly on a really cold day you could practially pick it up. That's why they usually hide when it's cold.
