Navy Corpsman or Civilian Paramedic?
Question:
I am 19, currently employed by a BLS/ ALS emergency medical and transport service in Norwich Connecticut. I am a certified NREMT- B, Rhode Island EMT-B, Connecticut EMT-B, and Firefighter 1. Im a fire-emt in two volunteer fire departments, convering everything from rural to industrial firefighting, rural car accidents (car into tree, fender benders, car vs. pedestrian) and highway and parking lot accidents. Ive been an EMT for about a year and a half, a firefighter 1 for a year, and am looking into the emergency rescue and care field as a profession. I have done a lot of research concerning corpsman and training, the college credits their license provides, the advancement to IDC (where I want to go), and Recon Marine perks (EMT-Paramedic training). My workplace also happens to have a Paramedic school in the education services department downstairs (its a $6000 dollar class, that is over a year long). Ive been very interested in joining the armed services to serve and defend my country, most particularly the Navy since I was very small, even before I had started school. My father is a retiree from the submarine service, and ive been raised in the military life. I ultimately want to be able offer some kind of emergency medical to people. What i want is excitement, I cant stand BLS (basic life support) anymore because of its long hours and low pay, and overall boring atmosphere. As ive told people before "if oxygen and a held hand cant fix it, its ALS!" (paramedic). Im fit, knowledgeable, bored in college (NO motivation whatsoever for fire tech and administration, but i would attempt to finish the year and a half i have left before joining E-3!), and love the medical field. Would the Navy be a good fit for me as a career? Or should I go for civilian Paramedic? Everyone is mentioning the PJ option, ive looked at it, and the sad thing is, im afraid of heights (like roller coasters and stuff, but im fine on ground ladders, aerial ladders, and rappelling down buildings (FF1)) Whats it like parachuting.

Answer:
You aren't going to be trained beyond the NREMT-B equivliant for most medic jobs within the military until later within their career. Now, keep in mind, military medicine and civilian medicine are pretty different and your experiences as a military medic would differ than that of a civilian medic. You would also do far more than a civilian NREMT-B is allowed as a basic medic so the civilian equivilants don't really matter outside of the requirement to keep them. If you are looking into the Navy because you want to be a Recon Corpsman, you may want to rethink things a bit. There are very few SOF support slots within the Marine Corps and they are very difficult to get into. If you want excitement, why don't you look into Special Operations? If you want to stick with the Navy, you can apply for the Navy SEALs, they have corpsmen. The Army has Special Forces medics (though there is no guarantee you would be choosen as a medic if you make it through selection .. there is a good possibility with your background). There is also the Ranger Regt. which has SOCM medics. Another job you may want to look into if saving lives and adventure is your calling is USAF Pararescue. Our bread and butter is combat search and rescue and personnel recovery .. though we have other Special Operations skill sets and mission requirements, those two things are our main focus. Try looking into some of the other fields out there .. talk to a couple of recruiters about your options within the Special Operations community as a medic or personnel recovery specialist. I think you'll find you have a lot of opportunity to really challenge yourself while putting your interest in the medical side of things to work. Feel free to e-mail me if you have more questions about something. Parachuting is just like anything else you may be afraid of .. it's easy once you decide you're going to do it and you aren't going to let fear get in your way.
