Where should we visit on the East Coast in late June? Question: We will be traveling with our 10 month old baby flying into NYC and out of Boston. We have 6 nights to spend anyway we choose and on the 7th night need to arrive in Manchester, NH for a wedding. We are from California--thirties, not into the patriotic history stuff so much, but prefer outdoor activities, good food, festivals and family-friendly places. Haven't spent much time on the east coast. We might be interested in vermont, maine, beach towns, will have a rental car and don't want to spend a fortune on lodging. Any recommendations? Answer: Newport, Rhode Island http://www.gonewport.com CapeCod, Mass http://www.capecodtravel.com New England is beautiful. Happy travels s |

What's going on in the Middle East at the moment and what has changed in the past 10 years or so? Question: I haven't really been able to keep up or care about what's been going on in the Middle East other than some big headlines because to me it all seems like a big mish mash of a shithole and it doesn't seem to be getting better and the news every day isn't that much different. Explosions. Terrorists. U.S. soldiers abusing people there.Car bombings. Tampered elections. etc. Can someone give me a decent rundown of what's going on? Answer: Nothing productive has been going on, that's for sure. Gaza suffered the recent war at the hands of Israel. Iranian elections happened in which Ahmadenijad won, but some think it was rigged. Lebanon also had parlimentary elections, the March 14 party won majority. I think the US wants to impose more sanctions on Syria. Iraq is still suffering at the hands of US occupations, as well as Afghanistan. Pakistan is currently at war with the Taliban. Nothing much happening in Jordan, or the Gulf countries. Same with the North African Arab countries. You're not really missing much. |

Why haven't there been more terrorist attacks in the United States? Question: Just out of curiosity, has anyone wondered the same thing? I hear on the news almost everyday car bombs, suicide bombers and all kinds of other attacks happen in the middle east but if terrorists really wanted to do the same here wouldn't it be just as easy? Like for example for a car bomb wouldn't it be fairly simple to blow up a car? I really really hope it doesn't happen but I can't help but wonder why more attacks haven't happened, especially since they've been recruiting more American citizens. Answer: I wouldn't listen to the news. During the Vietnam War I remember them saying things like, two Americans killed. 30 VC's killed. For all we know there have been terror attacks but the government keeps them quiet. Remember that bridge collapse and the first thing they said was "it was not an act of terrorism" I'm not saying that all the bad stuff is terrorism but we have to learn to read between the lines when it comes to the news. |

How would you convince the US government to fully support and invest in alternative sources of energy? Question: I know if the government really put every resource they had into alternative energy, it would become possible to commercialize this industry in as little as 10 years. But 2 decades of war in the Middle East have not encouraged this move, neither have terrorist attacks. Greenland already is moving away from oil as its primary source of energy, why can’t we? We have scientists and MBA’s that are just as brilliant. The only good news I’ve heard is that somewhere in the Midwest, I think it’s Colorado, the state returns some money to homes which use wind-powered energy instead of the traditional forms of energy (oil or electricity). Tax breaks on electric cars are not enough, because I haven’t seen that big of a change in our energy resources yet. Answer: It shouldn't be the government that does this. I am an Economics major, and spent a semester studying Environmental Economics. The solution can, will, and should come from the private sector. There are many companies out there researching alternate sources of energy, and when it becomes more economical to use these new advances in technology, the market will use them. Right now it is too cost prohibitive to use alternate forms of energy, but as other resources become more scarce, the price of them will go up, and we as a society will use alternate forms of energy, all without having to get the government involved. |

What to do with my car while in the military? Question: I'm in CA, haven't enlisted yet, so I wouldn't know where I'd be. Although, I'd like to be stationed in Europe or somewhere in the east coast. The question is, should I sell my car before going to basic? Or should I just keep it in case I can use it if I'm stationed in the US? What are the chances of me even using it while on active duty? Let alone, where can I keep the car while on active duty? Answer: How do you plan to get from point a to point b? Walking gets really old really fast, esp in the rain, snow etc. You will park your car in the parking lot with all the other cars. |

Santa Ana faces calls to stop impounding illegals cars are latinos all expected to support illegals or racist? Question: SANTA ANA – The question of how Latino this city's identity is, or should be, keeps cropping up, creating a bit of a minefield for the all-Latino City Council. One area of contention has been the city's downtown shopping district, on East Fourth Street, where some Latino merchants have complained they feel they are being pushed out in a gentrification move. The removal of a merry-go-round that had attracted Latino families to the Fiesta Marketplace plaza at Fourth and Spurgeon streets has symbolized what some see as an agenda to make the downtown more appealing to people of other ethnicities. This week the City Council found itself attacked on a different front. Activists on behalf of undocumented immigrants want Santa Ana to stop impounding the cars of unlicensed drivers who are caught in DUI checkpoints. A parade of speakers during the public comment period of Monday's meeting asked the City Council to follow Los Angeles, where police recently adopted a policy aimed at impounding fewer vehicles from unlicensed drivers. The issue is a complex one, sitting in the nexus of federal immigration enforcement, the California vehicle code, and city police practice. Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters said his department has already been doing what Los Angeles police recently started, which is to allow unlicensed drivers to call a licensed driver to come and drive their vehicle away, avoiding an impound and the onerous fees associated with it. Such calls are made at the discretion of the officers at the scene, in cases where they determine that the unlicensed motorist has an otherwise clean record, Walters said. The activists want to eliminate that discretion. They want the city to adopt an ordinance that would require officers to give sober, unlicensed drivers an opportunity to call a licensed driver, said Carlos Perea, a Santa Ana College student who spoke during public comments on Monday. "You could have done this years ago," Perea, 19, told the council members. "You're a Latino City Council ... It's so simple. Why haven't you done it?" Other speakers also attempted to appeal to the council members on grounds of ethnic solidarity. "All of you are Latino on the City Council, and you should support the common man," said one man, speaking in Spanish. http://www.ocregister.com/news/city-298990-council-lati no.html Answer: Doesn't "ethnic solidarity" equate to special favors? Isn't that supposed to be illegal? I have a better idea. Let's deport them. |

Motion question- Physics? Please Help!? Question: Physics question! Please help me.? Envision a minor motor-vehicle accident. Car X backs out of a parking space at 1.000m/s toward the east. Car Y, whose driver searches for a place to park, travels north at 1.000m/s. Neither driver sees the other car, and the cars collide. Suppose that each car (including its driver) has a mass of 1000kg. The total system momentum vector before the collision is approximately? Please help! I'm not really sure on this one. It's bugging me. there are four answers to pick from: a) 1000kg x m/s toward the northeast. b) 1414 kg x m/s toward the northeast. c) 2000kg x m/s toward the northeast. d) zero, because the vehicles haven't hit each other yet! It is said to be answer b, but how can this be? Answer: Principle of conservation of momentum deals with total momentum before and after collision only. It does not del with collision in particular at all. So Initial momentum vector, 'IP' is a vector um of the vector momentum of one car, which is 1000*i and another car with 1000*j, where 'i' is the unit vector in the direction of east and j in the direction of north. By parallelogram law. or just summing them as vectors, we get IP = 1000*i + 1000*j = 1000(i + j); Now i + j is not having magnitude 1 but sq rt(1+1) or sq rt(2) = 1.414; It has direction making equal angle with north and east in te firstquadrantt this direction is known as northeast. So IP = (1000*1.414)*e, where 'e' is a unit vector in nrth east direction. So we see that IP = 1414 kg m/s towrd north east option b) is correct. |

I seriously could use your input! i'm about to drive from the east coast to th west coast... repair on my car? Question: I need to know if you have suggestions for what i should do to prepare my vehicle (a toyota pesao & a dodge caravan, both w/ 200,000 miles) for a long road trip... or, i might be selling one & driving the other... or, is it possible to tow one behind the other for that distance? So, what is the best thing to do, (given that I haven't decided whether to sell, drive, tow...) when it comes to the repair/prepare issue? I seriously could use your input here!! and Thank you so much for helping me out!! Answer: I would sell one car and drive the other, the cost of the ball, hitch, wiring, and trailer rental to tow would be about what you would spend for a vehicle with 200K miles on it. (besides, if you are moving to the west coast, your vehicles may not pass the emissions requirements, anyway) Make sure you take your car to a reputable mechanic... tell them you are getting ready to make a cross-country drive in your vehicle and that you need it checked out. They can check your fluids, belts and hoses and make sure there is no sign of wear and dryrot, if you are due for fluid and filter changes, radiator flush, etc or need tires, you ought to have those put on, as well. You could likely use the money from the sale of the one vehicle to make sure the other is in tip-top shape for the trip. |
