Does anyone know how much this might cost or how i should go about this or have any advice...? thanks... Answer: http://www.mymovingquote.com/moving-companies/Georgia/Fort-Bennin g-GA/Auto-Transport/31905.html here is a link i found to get quotes from several auto shipping businesses. we had to ship our car from hawaii to maryland. it cost us about $1600. so yours shouldn't be as expensive. good luck with your pcs! |

Does transportation pay to ship one of you cars when you pcs stateside? Question: My husband is in the Army and we are pcsing from Fort Benning,Ga to Fort Carson,Co. and i was wondering if transportation or if they have someone to ship your car to your next duty station. I know they do it when you are going to another country, but do they do it stateside? we have2 cars and need one sent . my personal email is iluvmysoldier03@yahoo.com if anyone has any other info. they would like to share with me as well... thank you. Answer: No, the military doesn't pay for shipment of a 2nd car in a PCS move. Even on and overseas move, they only pay for 1 car. If you need it sent to your next duty station, it'll have to come out of your pocket. Why don't you just drive both cars?? You can drive one and he can drive one. That's what we did and we got reimbursed expenses for both of them. That's the only way I know to do it to get the military to pay. I don't even think in a DITY move, they'll pay for the 2nd car. You'll have to check with transportation. That's where you can get accurate facts from. Call them and find out. They might even be able to make arrangements for you at a cheaper cost if you do have to ship it yourself. Good luck!! |

Fort Carson, Colorado Questions.? Question: So my husband and I are moving to Fort Carson in September, and I dont know what to expect, with housing, base living, with the other wives and families etc. I was Curious on how housing works. Do we have to apply or are we placed somewhere? If I do have to apply, when do I do that? Is the housing there nice? I have a MILLION questions and I could go on, but any information would be very helpful! -He graduates AIT Sept.5th and we're supposed to report there by the 17th. -ALSO I know we are supposed to drive(from Cincinnati Ohio), but we dont have a car, and we are planning on buying one, but I have bad credit and he doesnt have any, so any suggestions?? Thank you!!! Answer: Fort Carson is just south of Colorado Springs--"The Springs" (where one ends the other begins.) My dh and I were stationed there at one time. Any post will have a waiting list, so expect to find off post housing for a while. It took us about a year to finally get into post housing. There is really old housing there and some newer housing. We got into the oldest housing, which was okay. It was a small townhouse type with two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs and a living/dining combo, kitchen, laundry room, and half bath downstairs. Some housing has basements others don't some are single level some are two story. We had a common front area, and a teeny tiny back yard with a fence--about 10 by 10--which included a storage closet. We weren't having to pay for utilities anymore so we liked it--utilities can get expensive especially in winter. We liked that our housing was closer to things like the PX, Commissary and a playground. Still, we couldn't walk to either the PX or Commissary--too far. When you get to post you will probably stay at the Inn on Post and then you will have to make the rounds taking care of paperwork, which is when you will get placed on the waiting list. We were up there this past summer while on vacation--had to show our eldest daughter our old stomping grounds and noticed that there is more housing than when we were there, so the wait might not be as long. The rest of post hadn't changed much in over 10 YEARS, with the exception of heightened security and less gates to use--which doesn't really matter to the average person/soldier. My dh was at the airfield since he was Army Aviation and those extra ways on and off post always made it easier for him to get to and from work. Fort Carson has a decent px, shoppettes, and commissary, which is basically we all ever used as far as post things. If I can recall well enough there is a theatre and bowling alley and a library--which we used a few times. The hospital is Evans. At one time I got into a program through ACS--Army Community Service where I did aerobics while my toddler played with other toddlers. I also did pottery for a spell and I'm sure they still have that. Ironhorse park sometime has events--our daughter's first fireworks show was there. They also had a Harvest Festival with pony rides, face painting--things like that at some other park or field while we were there. There is a dog kennel, daycare, youth center, equipment rental (camping etc), autocenter, laundromat, several chapels on post, but we didn't use them some at all or very often. Fort Carson is a decent post, but not really walkable things are too far apart. The basic area of Colorado Springs is beautiful---gorgeous. It is a high mountain area (the elevation is greater than a mile high--higher than Denver), so drink plenty of water, wear plenty of sunscreen and take it really easy when you first get there. I'm not a "there is nothing to do" type of complaining person, so we always found something fun or interesting to do. Colorado Springs has minor league baseball (skysox), an ice arena (public skating), cheyenne mountain zoo (save for when you've climitized as it is located higher than the rest of town and is a steep place to walk), quaint tourist towns like Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City (decorated beautifully at Christmas), Garden of the Gods (a rock formation park where you can hike trails, horseback ride and climb the rocks--the kissing camels are my youngest's favorite. The Trading Post at the Garden of the Gods is a great place to shop for your colorado souvenirs and other knick-knacks. Pikes Peak (again save this for later--it is over 14,000 ft--snow-capped for most of the year), there are 2 main malls--the Citadel is closest to Ft. Carson, the other is the Chapel Hills on the north end just south of the Air Force Academy. There are two Air Force bases nearby (the Academy and Peterson--we liked there BXs) The Academy has the Chapel which is a must see and displays of old airplanes and of course football games. Other area attractions are Seven Falls (it is pretty and the atmosphere is nice, just don't expect Niagara Falls.), Cave of the Winds (a cave--again don't expect something huge like Carlsbad Caverns), and the Cliff Dwellings at Manitou Springs. The Olympic Training Center offers tours as does Norad, Van Briggle Pottery (never did NORAD, but the OTCenter and Van Briggle was pretty interesting.) The Ghost town was just ok. There are several nice parks in the Springs with small lakes, ponds and fountain features--Memorial, Celebration (I hope I got the names right and not mixed up with some other post!!) The Springs is a decent sized town and Denver is just 70 miles north and Pueblo just 45 miles south. There is a really nice outlet mall in Castlerock 45 North of the Springs. There is an Amusement Park nearby The North Pole which has a Christmas theme--our little one loved it |

how many cars does the military ship for free? Question: We have two cars, we are moving all the way to fort carson from fort eustis. At the moment we are thinking if im correct that the military only ships one car so we are planning to drive our family car up there. now we are having doubts though because i am due to have our 3rd in april and we will be leaving in july. I mean we have traveled with a baby before but with a 7 year old, a 4 year old and a infant never! Im guessing we will make one hundred stops, dont know if that is a good idea. Any ideas? i mean the money they give is back for driving instead of flying might be good, but the torture of having all these kids in a car for so long might not be worth it. my husband just doesnt know lol. Answer: Normally the only time the military will ship a vehicle is if 1) you are going to or coming from a OCONUS assignment and it will ship 1 vehicle or 2) it is most cost efficient to ship 1 car to the base instead of paying out MALT & Per Diem. If you drive 2 vehicles then you are paid MALT (Currently $.27 per mile) and Per Diem for each vehicle & driver. So you would rate $109 for each driver, then $54.50 for each child. If you drive 1 vehicle then you get $109 for AD member, $81.75 for you and $54.50 for each child. Both cars goes: Mileage approx: 1725 x .27 = $465.75 x 2 = $931.50 Per Diem, 6 days to travel (300 miles per day) Both drivers 12 x $109 = $1308 Children 18 x $54.50 = $981 total = $3220.50 1 car goes: Mileage approx 1725 x .27 = $465.75 per Diem, 6 days AD member = $654 You = $81.75 x 6 = $490.50 Children = $981 total $2591.25 difference of $629.25 So if they can find a company that will ship the car for less than the difference then they may offer you the option. If not then it may not be allowed. These are just estimated prices because everything does change from year to year. You can use this as a chance to see a lot of things that you might not get the chance to again. You are limited to 300 miles a day which is good. During the summer the children are out of school anyway and this can be a learning experience. The baby shouldn't be too much of a problem because it at that stage still does sleep a lot. |

Moving from Ft. Carson to Ft. Wainwright & have some questions!? Question: So we (my husband, myself, 6yr old daughter, 2yr old son, & cat) are supposed to be moving from Fort Carson to Fort Wainwright in February & since it's considered OCONUS we have so much stuff to get done! I already know about the EFMP screenings & command sponsorship. *How long does it typically take for our stuff to arrive there? *Can we fly there? *Can we all fly together? *Will the army pay for our flight? *Will we receive money to help pay for expenses on the trip? *Will I be able to take my cat with us? *How is housing on post for E6? *Can we pick which village/neighborhood we want to live in? *How long is the waitlist? *How are the schools? *I know they will ship one vehicle..Where do they ship it to?? and how long does it take to get there? *If they ship our car to Anchorage, How is the drive from there to Fairbanks in February??? *How long does it typically take for our stuff to arrive there? and what do they do with it if we don't have anywhere to live yet? *I read online that you can no longer get COLA. Is that true? if not, how much would we be getting? *What's it like on post and in Fairbanks? If you have anything else that would be helpful I would GREATLY APPRECIATE it!!!!! Thanks for any advice!!!!! Answer: I was single when I was stationed at Wainwright, and it was years ago, so I can only answer a few of these questions, but here goes. Can we fly there, etc? -That all depends on your orders. How are the schools? -Significantly better than California's (the only basis for comparison I have) Where will our car get shipped? -Right to Fairbanks, about 3 miles from the main gate. How long is the drive from Anchorage? -8 hours - make sure you take full on, no kidding survival gear. What's it like in Fairbanks? -Fairbanks has all four seasons: Winter, June, July, and August. Winter is very cold. VERY cold. It gets colder than -40 every winter. The summers are short, but beautiful. High end shopping is non-existent, but there is a pretty good variety of outdoor and sporting goods stores. As long as you find a way to get involved in some sort of activity, Fairbanks is a pretty fun place, and a great place to grow up. I recommend cross country skiing in the winter and boating in the summer. |

Getting a car loan with no credit? Question: We also have no down payment. We are a young military family and we don't need anything expensive or flashy, just reliable, and we aren't sure about how to do it. Recent moving expenses and a new baby coming has wiped out our savings, which is why we lack a down payment. We are in the Colorado Springs/Fort Carson area and just moved here, no family or anything to help us out. Any suggestions? I am not worried about being able to make payments, we are responsible with that, we are just having a hard time finding a place. Answer: There are alot of companies that will give you a loan. But VERY VERY high interest rates. Just letting you know they also take your car if you dont make payments. |

Failed to provide evidence of insurance upon request? Question: Today is not one of my good days. I was stopped at gate 4 for a random inspection at fort carson. the usual turn off your car, place your key on the dashboard, license, registration and proof of insurance, step out of the car, open all compartments inside the vehicle, pop the hood and trunk. The MP searched the vehicle and found nothing. I gave them all they asked for. Only problem is that I forgot to put the updated insurance card in the car, so the one i gave them was expired. I asked if I could have him call my insurance company because I do have updated insurance, I just forgot to put it in the car ad he said "it doesn't matter at this point" so I was like alright, there's nothing I can do about it now. Then 5 minutes later, the MP car showed up and parked behind me for 15 minutes and finally came over to me and gave me a violation notice stating" failed to provide evidence of insurance upon request" and checked the "USC" and "State Code" and 4 points will be deducted from my license, it also says "18 USC 13" and "42-4-1409(5)" next to the checked USC. what do they really mean? Box A was check which means I have to go to court. I searched it online but did not find a similar case. Now i'm ETSing in 2 weeks, my question is what does the checked USC and state code mean? Does it mean there's nothing I can do but eat the 4 points? like i said i did have updated insurance but they refuse to let me show my proof. Did anybody have similar experience in the past? I don't want to go back home and have to fly back here to go to court, but if the court tells me to, then i have no choice. I'm wondering if i can go to the federal court where my home of record is. any help on this is appreciated. Answer: if you in fact have insurance but didnt have you proof of it with you at the time requested you can alway either try to contact your broker or insurance broke on the spot let the cop or whatever speak with the agen or broker ,but i doubt it wouldl work , or show proof that you actually did have insurance later on when you go to court or pay your fine , your card with the dates should along with receipts should be good enough ,if not well my friend they got you.. |
