sales tax for used cars in north carolina?
Question:
What is the tax charged for a used car in north carolina?

Answer:
North Carolina Sales tax for a vehicle purchase is 3% of the taxable amount. The definition of the taxable amount is the amount of the purchase price of the vehicle less any trade-in credit. So for example: If you were purchasing a $10,000 vehicle with no trade you would have 3% sales tax on $10,000 or $300. If you had a trade that is worth $3000 that you are using toward the purchase then the the taxable amount would be $7,000 and the tax would total $210. Hope this helps. Ken

living in north carolina, car has no auto insurance, what can happen?
Question:
my husband is in iraq and i dont have a license. we live in north carolina, our insurance currently ended on the 25th of february. i am planning on puttin insurance on it again i was just wondering can we get in trouble for not having insurance on the car? can his license get suspended? ive heard some things like this. just need some help. also we live on base. thanks a lot.

Answer:
You need to surrender your license plates. Technically you are already in violation of North Carolina law by having a registered uninsured vehicle but I suspect they will be lenient if you explain that your husband was deployed, the car was not driven, and you were unaware of the regulations. Contact DMV immediately. You can then drop liability until your husband returns. You may want to retain comprehensive in case the car gets damaged even though it is not being driven. If the car is financed the finance company probably requires you to have comprehensive. Read the lapse of coverage section in the link.
