Which area to find an Apartment in New York and bring our cars or not?
Question:
We are going to relocate to New York. The work area will be around City Colledge of New York and Comlumbia University. Anyone has any suggestions about which area to rent for an affordable apartment? Nearby or about 30 minutes commute one-way are both ok, I tried Craigslist but get very confused about the location names ... Also, shall we bring our cars to New York? We have two now. Shall we bring one or none of them? Just a bit not sure whether it is ok to go to work or buy grocery without a car... Thanks a lot! By affordable I mean about $2000 per month for a one-bedroom. Now I am giving up the idea to bring our cars with us:-) Thanks a lot!

Answer:
"Affordable" in NYC is a matter of opinion. How much are you going to make and out of that how much are you willing to spend on rent? If you've got the means right now to have 2 cars, I'm going to assume you're a fairly established professional. I would suggest to you Morningside Heights, the Upper West Side, or Clinton/Hell's Kitchen/Midtown West in Manhattan. You might also consider Riverdale in the Bronx. There are good places to live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and in the other boroughs, but they'll generally involve 1 or 2 subway transfers. If you plan on living in Manhattan, banish the thought of bringing a car with you. NOW. Unless you can afford to pay between $600-$1000/month to garage it. Most people in NYC get by without a car because we have one of the most extensive public transit systems in the world. Also, supermarkets deliver so you don't need a car for that either and you can get a taxi for any other large item you need to carry. More help here: http://www.housingnyc.com/html/guide/basics.html

Do all leased cars in New York automatically have comprehensive insurance?
Question:
Do all (or most) leased cars in New York automatically have comprehensive insurance? (Is it a requirement?) My car just got damaged, possibly permanently disabled, from a flood. It is a Subaru. I don't have the documents with me and I'm unable to call anywhere or anyone right now. I need to know whether it's covered. Thank you.

Answer:
yes they have full..... coverage at least ur required to carry it.......as for flood tho..some policies do not cover flood damages... same as u have to pay extra for flood damage coverage on ur home....

Where can I find pictures of the first subway cars in New York?
Question:
I'm looking for pictures of the first subway cars, or early Subway cars in New York. Please help! Thanks!

Answer:
As a Charter member of the NY Transit Museum I feel that I have to correct one of the answers. The NYTM does NOT have a subway car from 1904. It does have BRT elevated cars (wooden) from 1903 but those never operated in service in the subway. The early IRT car in the Museum is from 1916. One of the earliest cars used in the subway is not in the museum's collection. August Belmont's private subway car "Mineola" is in the collection of the Shoreline Trolley Museum in Brandford/East Haven, CT (I am a member there too). http://www.bera.org . Unfortunately the condition of the car is very bad that it is kept under cover in a car barn. The cost of restoration is way to much. www.nycsubway.org is a good source for pictures of early subway cars. Pictures of the first IRT cars can be found here: http://www.nycsubway.org/articles/irtbook_ch8.html http ://www.nycsubway.org/articles/theymovedthemillions2.html BTW - a great deal of the information on Wikipedia regarding the NYC Subway came from www.nycsubway.org. You will see the text is very identical on both sites (nycsubway.org has been around longer than Wikipedia)

how does the automated station announcement work on the new cars of the new york city subway system?
Question:
announcments are made at certain points before the train comes into the station automatically how does it do that?

Answer:
the trains, classes R142, R142A, R143, R160A, R160B and the upcoming R179, have built in odometer programs that track the number of wheel rotations as the train moves. Since a train wheel rarely slips the number of rotations needed to travel a given distance is relatively stable. Before the cars were first used, the MTA calculated the number of turns and used that to program the trains to give the stop announcement. all other announcements are manually triggered from the cab.

Why are new cars cheaper in NYC? I live in Albany, is it worth it to drive down to new york?
Question:
Im trying to find out why the same new cars are 3 or 4k cheaper down the city?

Answer:
I have no idea. Probably because not everyone drives? Because the subway is more convenient and much more cheaper and not everyone has a car here so it's much more cheaper because not a lot of people drive.

Why are subway cars from New York thrown in the ocean?
Question:
I've seen documentaries and footage of it and it seems stupid. All the metal in the bodywork can be recycled for products that require inferior quality steel.

Answer:
I am not sure about this in particular, but I know some structures like streetcars (usually small ships) are sunk to provide artificial reefs. These attract all sorts of fish, and coral, and so on, and are actually good for the ocean, as well as providing interesting places for divers to go. To do this just to throw them away would be a waste. To make an artificial reef - a very good idea.
