Is it illegal to have a pink car in Iowa?
Question:
I was looking at a pink car and my friend told me that it was illegal to have a pink car in Iowa because Mary Kay cars are pink... ?

Answer:
You might not be able to get "actual" mary kay pink, but any other pink is fine. We painted a car for a pro football player several years ago & he wanted it the same color as his team's helmet. He had to get permission from the NFL to use that color because they had the rights to that color. In my state you are not supposed to be able to paint your car "state trooper" blue, but i know someone who got the formula and did it anyway. On a state trooper type car too.

Iowa and Hybrid cars?
Question:
I live in Iowa and auto registration fees are 1% the LIST price of the vehicle. Since hybrid cars generally command a premium price compared to similar cars in its category, registration is going to be a higher, thus reducing the savings of having a hybrid. Does it seem that Iowa is discouraging the use of hybrids?

Answer:
This may be an unintended consequence of making a law that essentially taxes more for a higher priced item, however; Iowa does not offer any incentives for purchasing electric or hybrid vehicles. We might conclude that if not intended it at least follows a pattern. http://www.pluginamerica.org/why-plug-vehicles/state-federal-ince ntives

Where to race cars in Des Moines Iowa?
Question:
There aren't any drag strips around here. me and some other people used to do street races in down town "illegally" but i've been out of town for a while and now i'm back and I have no idea where they'd be at. anyone here know where some races will be ? i'm ready to stomp people lol

Answer:
There are several in Iowa. Oskalosa (Eddyville) is the closest to DM. To find out what's going on you'll want to join one at least one of the motor clubs, there are a bunch in DM. Town has been full of gearheads and gassers for over 50 years, still is. What do you race? Just google your car, T-Bird, GTO, Import - add Des Moines Auto Racing and you'll probably find a couple of clubs. Alternatively just call or e-mail one of the tracks - MAM or Eddyville both have active schedules. If you want to do illegal racing, good luck finding any. For a while in the early 90's a couple of guys tried doing some on the long stretch starting at Beach Girls out by Booneville, but he cops figured it out in no time. Plus, nobody was really interested. Why spend $20k+ on your ride to get it seized by the police?

I'm a student living in Nebraska but with Iowa car plates?
Question:
i recently moved to Nebraska to attend school. My main residence is in Iowa with my Mother, do I need to get Nebraska tags for my vehicle or can I keep the Iowa insurance and Iowa car plates ?

Answer:
You may legally keep The Iowa plates. Full time college students attending school out of state and paying out of state tuition have special privileges. They may use their home address as their official residence. Not all insurance companies will honor this though. You need to check with your agent.

I bought a car in iowa and when i wanted to register it in illinois they want to tax me, why?
Question:
I put a down payment on the car and i paid the tax in iowa but in illinois they want to charge me 1,400$ for registration n paperwork, why so much? I just want to kno what the dealer has to do or what i should do or maybe i have to pay it no matter what?

Answer:
Usually when you buy a vehicle in another state and live in another you usually pay the sales tax on the vehicle in the state where you license and tag the vehicle in. In your case, you bought the vehicle in Iowa but you intend to tag and license it in Illinois. I would suspect you would pay the sales tax in Illinois when you get all the paperwork completed and the vehicle licensed and tagged in Illinois. You might want to ask the person you bought the vehicle from why you are paying tax on the vehicle in Iowa when you will be getting it legal in Illinois. I just bought a truck in another state and brought it to my state. I didn't pay any sales tax on the truck in the other state but I did have to pay the sales tax on the amount of purchase in my state when I went to get it all legal and tagged in my state. If your state collects what is called personal property tax you will have to pay that tax at the end of the year or when your state sends out the personal property tax. In my state you get a form from the county collector just before the first of every year. As an example, when I get the form I will document on the form that I had this truck as of January 1, 2011. At the end of December of 2011 I will pay my real estate and personal property taxes and the truck will be included in this payment at that time. I am not sure why you are paying any tax in Iowa. Maybe there is some kind of tax Iowa requires from out of state buyers of vehicles. You might also call one of the DVM offices in Iowa and ask them why you had to pay what you did. See if the DVM and the person you bought the vehicle from give you the same answer. If not, I would go with what the DVM office people tell you.
