what cars are suitable for visiting alaska for a few months ? Question: i need help with what car to bring to alaska when i go i drive a porsche cayenne turbo s and i really love it but im afraid to take it as it wont proform as well and i dont want it to just spin the weels . Answer: Depends upon what time of year and where you plan to go. Winter should be 4WD, definitely not your small sports car. Any dependable car is generally fine in summer. If you are driving up, be prepared for rough roads and likely a cracked windshield. Or you can fly up then buy or rent something after you get here. |

Cars and trucks in Alaska? Question: I own a 2004 Dodge Neon. I bought it and drive it in Hawaii, but I'm relocating to Alaska. That car has never been driven in cold weather and I've never used the heater, though I know it works. My question is should I buy a truck or SUV before I leave? I'll be starting out in Fairbanks, but end up some place rural later, so I know then I'll have to swap the neon for an SUV, but starting out will my Neon be okay? And does anyone know if my Neon could have a block heater installed? Answer: Try visiting a car repair center in Alaska. http://www.autorepairshopreview.com/Alaska-Repair-Shops.html They can help you with your questions. Try vistiting multiple shops and compare what they say. |

Can you drive to Alaska with a rental car? Question: So, I was thinking about driving to Alaska from South Carolina. I would rent a car, drive to Alaska, then fly back. Would rental cars allow this...crossing through Canada and dropping it off in AK? Purpose: Just to say you've done it. Cost isn't an issue. I'd probably set aside about 10 days to meander my way there, spend a few days in Alaska, then fly back. Answer: Rental car companies generally allow drop offs in different cities/states. Sometimes there are even discounts if you are picking up from a location with too many and dropping off at a location with too few. Alaska has all the main rental places (Hertz, Avis, etc). Just call and ask. But don't expect to drop the car off at some tiny border town. You may need to drive into Alaska a few hundred miles. (easy to do). |

what are the exact parts i need to weatherize my car for alaska winter? Question: My family and I are PCSing from Hawaii to Alaska in November. We have a Mitsu Endeavor SUV, currently has remote start. What is recommend that we do in order to help the life of our car while we are stationed in fairbanks? Answer: You will need a block heater (usually best to get installed unless your handy under the hood) a battery blanket or heater, and a oil pan heater. It might be best to wait till you get here and have a local shop do it all at once. In addition to the heaters you need arctic or (very) cold weather rated cords and a set up to have the cords run together into one plug in end. In addition you will want a 15-30 foot blue arctic extension cord so you can plug in when the temp drops. You will also want to check your radiator and battery fluids. And you may consider changing to synthetic oil, or at least winter weight. Shops up here are familiar with this and run 'winterization' specials every fall. And I have heard of more then one new resident getting these things taken care of in the lower 48, only to get here and find out they had wasted money and now needed to get things fixed to work in Alaskas cold. Also have no idea of it is 4WD, but hopefully it is. Depending on where you live and what you do you may want to invest in tire chains. And it is always a good idea to carry a little cold weather gear in your rig when you drive in winter. |
