What time do the cable cars in San Francisco start runing?
Question:
We're planing to go to San Francisco and want to avoid all the traffic and confusion of one-way streets, so we're going on foot and by trolley car. What time do the first cars start running (in hopes of avoiding a line)? What time do they stop?

Answer:
The Cable Cars start running at 6am. The very first car leaves the barn at 5:45 am. The cars stop running at about 12am. If you want to avoid lining up at the turn table at Powell and Market, Bay and Taylor and Bay and Hyde, go one block from the turn table and wait at the station there. (only do that when the line is longer than 45 minutes wait. The cars each depart from the stations about every 10-15 minutes. The price is $5 one way, and $11 all day. Be sure to have a great stay in San Francisco.

How are San Francisco cable cars' cable channels maintained and cleaned?
Question:
Do the streets have to be dug up? Do maintenance engineers access the channels via manholes? Do little cleaning robots trawl through the tunnels in the night?

Answer:
No, no robots. :) But you're right, how do they get to the channels? You're actually close w/ one of your answers. Though not exactly via manhole cover, the channels are accessible via street level. The "Cable Car Museum" has an excellent breakdown of how the cables, channels, and overall cable-car mechanism works. In addition to the explanation, there are also photos - which makes everything even clearer. I'll include the link below. Hope it helps!

I need the number of cars owned by residents of San Francisco, or the amount of carbon dioxide those cars pump into the atmosphere in a given amount of time. It's for a school project on carbon emissions. Please also put the source you got your figure from so I can list it in my bibliography and check the fact myself. Thank you!

Two cars leave San Francisco and Santa Cruz respectively (say 70 miles apart). They travel toward each other a?
Question:
Two cars leave San Francisco and Santa Cruz respectively (say 70 miles apart). They travel toward each other at rates of 40 mph and 30 mph. A hummingbird flying at the rate of 70 mph starts out just as the faster car departs and flies to the slower car. It keeps flying back and forth between the cars until the cars meet. How far does the tired hummingbird fly?

Answer:
Hummingbirds do not fly that fast. They may get above 35 MPH for short bursts but could not fly for any distance at 70 MPH.

How do the San Francisco cable cars work?

Answer:
The cars have no independent power. all momentum comes from the moving cable which is going at approximatley nine miles per hour- true the cars go faster downhill when they let go of the cable. The gripman stands in the center of the car and controls the key grip (center lever) which connects the car to the cable, per se. there are other levers for hand , wheel and track brakes and an emergency brake, nicknamed the Red Line or Red Handled, from its color. the cables are driven from the power house by electric motors (formerly steam was used) running at a steady nine miles per hour. the cars are believed to be narrow gauge. there were some cities that had combination trolley and cable cars-probably center third rail- around the turn of the century this hybrid car thing never caught on. Are you able to get on and off cable cars in San Francisco whenever you want?
Question:
I'm looking to take the Powell-Hyde line to Ghirardelli Square and stop by Chinatown on the way.

Answer:
No, the cable car does not issue transfers. However, you can buy a one-day cable car pass for $13 which will allow you to do that. It's pretty cost effective, since the ride is $5 each time you get on.

What is the difference (in looks) between light rail and cable cars in San Francisco?
Question:
As a tourist, how can I tell them apart?

And to illustrate SF Dude's good description, here's a cable car: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=SF+cable+car&view=detai l&id=F2C0F501D5CBB90D4ECB3B937381C47E984A8113&first=0 And here's light rail: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=SF+light+rail&view=deta il&id=74ACDFBFD30284065A223E8AD541F61A09FB589C&first=0&FORM=IDFRI R or the historical cars: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=SF+historic+light+rail& view=detail&id=92ACF9E4093C3EE90FA5C517A3947D642A81D34F&first=0&F ORM=IDFRIR Also, light rail uses overhead power, and cable cars use underground cables.

Are cars being banned from San Francisco?
Question:
Is every street in San Francisco other than the end of Market Street being closed to cars? Is driving in San Francisco coming to an end?

Answer:
No. Cars and light trucks are not banned in San Francisco. It just seems that way with all the restricted and limited parking spaces. Add to that the lay of the land - the hills and curves, construction and detours - and it becomes a daunting chore to navigate those streets in the best of times. If you don't have to drive - don't. All the best.
